    I met a guy last fall who was antelope hunting near Datil, NM in a restored FJ40. I asked him why he was hunting in such a beautiful vehicle and he said it was his dad’s and he grew up hunting in it. I thought that was a really cool story.

    Great video of building some great Cruisers! I have been soldering my wiring for some time now, but never knew the "tinning both ends" method. Another tool in my bag!

    I bought a new FJ40 in ‘79, off road it was great but getting there was painful! The six cylinder motor made a great boat anchor!
    In Australia, we pay as much for a litre of fuel as you guys for a gallon. The FJ40 was the thirstiest vehicle I have ever owned and the slowest on the highway.
    Enjoy your nostalgia, I’d never go back!

    Very interesting build, sure did bring back some memories, some good and some not so good...... one thing I will pick up on though is that I did not like the way the brake line coils were made, tube should only be formed around a former or filled with sand so you do not crush the profile when you bend it, the amount of crush on the larger coil would not be to bad but at 5:32 on the sharp bend is a kink and that will fail sooner rather than latter. A flexible line would have made a lot more sense.

    • @procruiser
      @procruiser  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mark. Thank you for watching our videos in so much detail. The bends we make are with the best equipment and we would never install a brake line on a vehicle that had even the start of a kink on it. You are correct, that would eventually fail.

    • @procruiser
      @procruiser  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I should also mention that the brake line used in the video is a copper nickel alloy material that's really easy to bend with your fingers, it rarely kinks like other brake line does. We don't use it all the time because it's got a copper color that doesn't work with all of our restorations, but for the purposes of the demo, it worked great.

    BTW, why did you guys make the shackles vertical, when i did that on mine, the ride was way too stiff, i put a little angle to my shackles front and rear and rides so much better.

    • @procruiser
      @procruiser  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Your comment about vertical shackles is right on. I'm not sure where in the video they look vertical, but they are actually angled back as part of our design.

    • @DM-sq3jm
      @DM-sq3jm 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s at 12:25 where you explain the shackle reversal. The camera angle makes it look more vertical than it probably is.

    • @DM-sq3jm
      @DM-sq3jm 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Robert Howell: You may not be aware, but camera angle and lighting can have an unintended effect on an object even if that object is on a lift.

    Wondering what would be the best engine to put in an FJ40 1968, between a 2F, 1FZ-FE or 1GR-FE, fuel being the main consideration and resale

    • @jesusgmeza
      @jesusgmeza ปีที่แล้ว

      considering the fuel, the 1GR is the most profitable option, but more expensive and mechanically difficult to adapt, the gearbox is very long and the rear shaft result very short, depending on how practical and easy the 1FZ is much simpler and is the most powerful option within the same engine family. but more expensive in fuel

    • @jamesg1745
      @jamesg1745 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@jesusgmeza Thanks so much, my FJ40 has an F - I want to upgrade and live in a city, but was thinking 2F or 1FZ-FE. Fuel economy at about $2 per litre where I live. Also reliability - what would you go for.

    not to crazy about his solder job. Solder will give a good electrical connection, but a weak mechanical connection.Dielectric grease and a properly crimped butt connector will give a better connection. Best is to use an uninsulated butt connector, crimp so seam is in the valley, the flow solder into connector.

    Huh? No twisting the wires before soldering? Why not?

    • @procruiser
      @procruiser  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not necessary, and the resulting larger mass of wiring from twisting really makes it hard to keep things clean. Try it this way and try to pull the wires apart, I bet you'll be surprised at how strong this type of joint really is.

    • @jdog4534
      @jdog4534 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@procruiser I know solder is a lot stronger than it would seem. But isnt it better to have electricity flowing through a better copper to copper connection?. . I'm going to watch this video again. I kind of forget the technique already. Btw, awesome videos and content. Im almost feeling inspired to get working on the three I have..

    • @procruiser
      @procruiser  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jdog4534 You should! It's amazing how easy it is to stay motivated if you only devote 45 min a day. You are right, the conductivity of solder is quite a bit less than copper. The technique in this video isn't really for wires circuits that have a lot of amps traveling through them. Big stuff needs a different method, or better yet, no joints or splices at all. I can tell you that out of thousands of connections, we have never had an issue except for when soldering to a ring terminal, like for a ground. They get a little brittle and can break off easier.
