  • 1998’s American History X isn’t just a great '90s movie, but a film whose content and subject matter are still relevant today. The movie's protagonist, Derek Vinyard, was played by acclaimed actor Edward Norton in one of his career-defining roles.
Norton's gripping and raw performance gave moviegoers an in-depth look into the life of a neo-Nazi skinhead and his gradual shift away from the movement. The movie is still a poignant reminder of the work we need to do to progress as a society.
Norton received an Academy Award nomination for his stellar performance, but here’s why he was never the same after American History X.

Oscars are still very much even to this day politically motivated. If that movie earned an oscar, there would always be in question wether the oscars supported the "story" or not. No way that would end up well.
Just like the movie masterfully shows, rage and hate create more rage and hate, and it stops being about what happened in the beggining but just the hate for someone because they hate you, and the cycle never stops unless both parties put an end to it mutually.

I'll tell you what. This movie changed my understanding of my responsibility as an older brother. I knew I loved my younger brother when we were growing up but I saw this movie when I was about 12 and I think it changed my life. Seeing the impact of an older brother and the influence of their relationship made the gravity of my role extremely apparent. I always felt these two actors absolutely captured the kinship of actual brothers very well. The ending of this movie was so devastating I have only seen this movie once all the way through. And that is only because the movie was effective enough to have made its argument, in its entirety, the first time through. Thank you for your performance Mr. Norton. It changed who I became as an older brother.

Kind of reminds me of *De Niro* as Bickie in *Taxi Driver....*
A disturbing role, can only become classic if you get the right actor.
Another good movie, in this same vein, was 1992's *Romper Stomper* with *Russell Crow,* another actor not given near enough credit for his body of work. Although they were not on Black people, the Orientals caught *HELL* in that one!!
I actually like low budget films that cause a stir. *100 Million dollar Big Hollywood Monsters,* can seem detached, and unrealistic, while cheaper / grittier films that almost look like you could have filmed them in your back yard using your lunch money, feel like they have more purpose really.

Jacob Wright Right, which I thought WS a great quote..he did say life is too short to be pissed off all the time and that hate is baggage, but he never said he was wrong. He knew it wasn’t that he was wrong, it’s just that he knew that no matter how hard he tried nothing would ever change. This was proven to be correct at the end when after he did all that for his younger brother telling his jail stories and that it’s wrong and taking him away from the white supremacjst gang, what happens? That black dude shoots him anyway. So it’s like the film is coming off like it’s showing you how bad racism is, and it is..but in the end it’s not that racism is bad..the message is that it’s inevitable.

@@reservoirfrogs2177You’re correct that people who don’t see this film as being anti-racism are ignorant. That said, unfortunate as it is, some people miss the entire point of this film. It is even, oddly enough, popular amongst alt-right neo-nazis who think that there’s logic in the what’s said about the whole white power philosophy and the argument against racism is just about peoples “feelings”. It is especially ironic given they pretty obviously shows the recruits for the neo-Nazi gang are people who feel rejected or ignored and who are just sheep used to push some nuts ridiculous philosophy because it “makes them a part a something”. For whatever reason some people watch this movie and just like seeing the swastikas and hearing Edward Nortons speech about Rodney King and ignore the entire point of the film. It takes a special type of ignorance to think this is a pro neo-nazi film but that ignorance exist unfortunately.

Wonderful in Fight Club, 25th Hour, Birdman and Larry Flyntt...He should have won ‘supporting’ for Primal Fear, but it’s American History X that’s his finest performance.
