Your floor has just the right balance of texture & variation for believably. Using the pastel chalks instead of paint is something I can wait to try! Lots of work, but worth it! Cheers, Kev.
@@kevsmodellingminute thanks! I love chalk pastels also because there is no waste. They don't dry out like acrylics, so if you have to stop working for some reason and then get back to it, a bit of water is enough to "revitalize" them, whereas paint will inevitably get wasted if you don't use all of it at once
@@kjhaygood thanks! You can also change the colours, I've seen floors with hexagonal tiles like these but white and blue, and arranged in a sort of flower pattern
I've never used Fimo Air Drying clay before so I'm quite impressed at how your cut tiles dried flat and didn't curl nor crack as as other air dry clays will usually do. 👍👍
@@elizabeths4371 it's a nice clay. I'm always looking for new types of air drying clays because I have very cold hands and conditioning is very hard for me. This one is very soft right from the start but at the same time once you flatten it remains like that, it doesn't curl. The finish is a bit "papery" so it's not suited for all types of projects though.
@@francinemiranda8409 I find making floors very relaxing and usually do it while listening to podcasts...so for me it's not a matter of patience, but just having my hands making something while learning new stuff, but I get what you mean!
This is very helpful, thank you. How do you recommend giving them more of a glossy look, like what you might see on a bathroom floor or kitchen backsplash?
@@elizabethworley7073 thanks! Ok, I would suggest a couple of things. First use a clay which has a "ceramic" finish, like polymer clay or an air drying clay such as cold porcelain. This one I used has a "paper finish", opaque and slightly textured, so it's not good to imitate ceramic. And then I would use a high quality gloss varnish (instead of the matt one I used). If the final grout layer does affect the glossy varnish a bit, I would probably touch up each tile again with gloss varnish, without going over the gaps.
Hi Cecilia. I'm just about to try this idea myself (after finding a similar hexagonal tool in my garage). When you made the chalk pastel colours, did you just mix them with water or did you use some kind of clear binder? Cheers, Kev.
@@kevsmodellingminute no, just water. The protective varnish I applied afterwards should make sure the colour won't fade away. Good luck with your floor then!
Fantastic! Incredible detail. How long did it take you to create the floor? I'm pretty new to this world, at least attempting to create, and I listened to podcasts too while working on a marble effect tile floor. It's a bit like gardening in that you don't need 100% of your attention to focus, so its a great way to learn while creating! Thank you for sharing your incredible work!
Thank you! I'm not sure, because when recording it takes way longer, I have to check lights, focus, right camera angle...but I'm sure I began on Monday and by Friday I was done. And I work around one hour at night, after dinner😊 It's exactly like gardening, which I also do. Making tikes is like weeding for me (I know it sounds crazy, but I find it calming and oddly satisfying). Good luck with your marble floor!
Stunning so realistic...very well explained. Something I would like to try..thank you ❤❤

Totally amazing, the tiles look so realistic. I love the colour variation and texture.

These are amazing, I want to try this method on a diorama floor, it looks super realistic!
Woah, this looks awesome! So much work but very worth it.

I love the result! But afraid I don't have the patience required...I have, however, also created a tiny witch's cottage in a lantern like yours. 👍🏻
