Just a tip, you'll need to put some type of tube or spare hub into the dropouts and over the axles to have crush protection otherwise the non-threaded side of the axle isn't providing any support. I've used pvc/plastic tubing for sprinklers cut down to the hub width which works pretty well. Edit: forgot to say, have a great trip!
Love my postco bag. As soon as I take the fork off, I put the bearings and spacers right back on. Keeps everything where it supposed to be and in the write order.
Very cool. I took a biking trip to Girona with some friends a few years ago. We rode the Pirinexus route. Even made it to France for a day. Couple favorite memories: Finding some medieval ruins outside of La Jonquera and checking into a hostel where the guy at the front desk was blind and only spoke Catalan. Be careful… wine is cheap and good!
Great time on the breakdown and pack. I reviewed some travel Triathlete Magazine and I'll never forget the Ruster Hen House. It is a two bag system with the second bag housing the wheels. Like your bag, the frame case did require removal of the fork. Each bag was no bigger than a large suitcase and the idea was to avoid the airline fees.
Wow! Impressive amount of time! My Surly World Troller has S&S couplers, and 26” wheels. I think it would go into this case much easier than the case I have. I like that all the padding pieces are included. Recently, I finished the Trans Am. My husband shipped me my case. It took me about 2 hours to pack it up (in all fairness, it had been awhile, previously I’ve packed it in an hour and 20 minutes).
From a Spanish supporter, good luck on your trip. If you have any questions from Spain you can ask me. I don't know everything but I know a good part of my country.
Well done Russ! That was WAY faster than I could ever hope to do, really well done. Have a great trip! Sounds like you'll be doing some filming for the channel, which we'll all look forward to of course, but most importantly I hope you two can turn off work mode for a while and just enjoy yourselves!
I’ve taken 3 bike trips ft lauderdale to Barcelona - got a cardboard box from my local bike shop that they were throwing out - you know the ones bikes are delivered in - broke the bike down stuffed it in the box with foam noodles - and everything arrived Just fine in BCN. One box even had a bike car rack in and was just 52lbs, other box had panniers helmets and some clothes at 53lbs . Each box was €80 one way. This past spring did the same - palm beach to bcn via atl - this time the box went as my checked bag for free. No damage at all. Been riding in the French side of the Pyrenees.
Nicely packed, Russ. As @ Berkeley Martinez mentioned, you can just drop the headset and spacers back on the steerer tube so tey don't get lost and it might be easier to remember the order seeing it that way. Another tip is that 40-42lbs packed is an ideal weight for the Transfer Case. It's light enough to maneuver it easily but heavy enough that people (baggage handlers) wouldn't throw it around. Keeping it at 40 gives you weight leeway to load with things you might pick up during the trip. Souvenirs (pasalubong?), food, etc. Have a great trip!
Wow, I love your channel! Not only do you make everything fun, you pack so much useful information in on topics you would never find anywhere else. I have always been intimidated by the idea of packing a bike up to travel (which I have many places I want to bike travel at) but you have taken the mystique out of it and given me the confidence I can do it. I thought that time was amazingly fast! Thank you. P.S. I worry about soft side cases though as many years ago an airline destroyed my suit bag and some of its content on a trip. Left us know how it fares!
Russ, put your rear derailleur in and old sock or fly reel bag keeps it from getting chain lube on stuff and dinged up. Also you can pack cycling clothes and other misc items in the void areas. Have a great trip!
I've used my post carry bag a lot, including to Switzerland. Had to claim my bag off the domestic flight at LaGuardia and transfer it myself to the international flight. I'll bet you have a mailing tube kicking around, cut it down to protect dropouts over the TAs.
I think it's time for you and Laura to go global holiday, Maybe Spain ? Wait? What?! Awesome! Can't wait for those reports. 1 of my favorite urban/rural destinations with the semi slicks. Your camera made the bike bagging seem like magic, +ten precious pounds of sought after partypace merch? Happy travels ☺
Stoked that you're taking a trip to Europe and really looking forwards to seeing what you get up to. First time I've seen a bike bag packed. You certainly made it look easy enough. Like, yeh, I could do that! Lol
Oh Wow Girona, amazing-have fun! You guys will love it. Can't wait to watch the adventures. Too bad I'm on the western side of Spain (Galicia area above Portugal), would love to join for a few kms or a watercolor session. Will try to DM in case you might need anything. Long time fan happily here to welcome you.
Here's another long time viewer from the Galicia area 😊. I'm a bit jealous of the guys in Girona, I would really like to do a coffee outside with you (even if it was just for telling you that I find your videos very inspirational). I'm really looking forward for your videos while in Spain!
welcome to my country and I hope you enjoy the time you stay here, Spain can offer you a lot, I would add an airtag in case your suitcase is lost or stolen
This didn't look too bad. I was originally thinking to go for a bag where you only need to take the front wheel out and the handlebar off (plus the pedals i guess). But my main concern i where to put a carry bag if i plan to do a tour.
Any thoughts Russ on this smaller style of bag vs the soft cases from Evoc and others that allow you to keep the fork installed? Similar weight, but longer size. Curious what that tradeoff looks like in terms of less to disassemble and fuss with vs carrying bag in tight spaces
A huge concern for us is connections to and from airports. With the Transfer Case we can get two of them in the boot of most cabs and sedans without having to track down a van or truck. The extra breakdown is worth it when actually traveling and navigating train stations and airports.
Nice video and case. This looks like a very nice bag but 1) Even the smallest bag is 73" overall which is technically too big even for oversized luggage. Hope your airline of choice is bike friendly 2) All of these style bags are geared toward someone landing at a single point and then building up at a hotel and then riding around with the bag either left at the hotel or carried as a backpack. Not very geared toward a ride through rider and a 12lbs starting weight is a huge thing to consider.
@@PathLessPedaledTV Don't get me wrong. It sure looks like a great bag and I'm glad you highlighted it because it seems like a good one. I've now flown with a bike several times which when packed is under the 50lb mark but a little higher than the target 62". Never seen an airline measure anything ever. I think the fact that it's a soft sided bag helps not draw red flags of a bike being inside. As for building up in a hotel and riding around that seems to be the more common way. Meanwhile I'm on my third week in Italy with a cheap AliExpress bag that fits my XC 26er to fly but also can hang off my handlebars or fit in my panniers. Through ride bags don't get enough attention but I'm probably all in with a very used but refit bike, bag, touring bags (used from a co-op) and various bits from AliExpress / Amazon than the retail on your bag alone. 90's XC 26ers frames have a hidden feature no one talks about in that the rear triangle can disconnect and flip up and over to make them super compact. 🤩
Faster. I'm having a bike made with S&S couplers, but am now wondering if that was needed? I am most worried about the bike in the belly of a plane and the bowels of the airport, but this video was encouraging. Doesn't look that bad. Get my bike at the end of October.
Nice video! I've done some tours and the bike packing always dreads me... I never use a bike bag because I don't know what to do with it once I land and assemble back the bike. What do you do with the bag? Keep up the good work.
May I know where did you pack your bike bags, assuming you’re using bike packing type bags instead of panniers. Also it looks like the bicycle do not have racks. Will the bag fit if there’s a rear rack?
I've looked at these types of bags a few times and have just never been able to find THE one that screams at me to buy it. Granted, I don't fly with my bikes as much as some, but if I had the bags, i would carry my bikes on more trips. Enjoyed the video, thanks for sharing,
Once again, I find myself on the same side of an issue as you, Russ (and Laura?). What a valuable & informative video. I'm building up a new Velo Orange Poly, with an eye towards ease of breaking down for travel ("...packing for..."); an issue I'm interested in is, what about cable couplers permanently installed (not for the frame, I can't afford that!)? Also, cool use for the air tags, thx.
I sure would - greasy chains are a disaster, and who wants mud and dog poo chunking off the tires? One approach is to keep big garbage bags for the wheels and around the chain/derailleur, but once the bags are dirty, putting a clean rig in them defeats the purpose a bit. Unless I get a hard case, I will continue to take off the chain and derailleur and clean them and put them in ZipLoc bags. If I get wireless shifting, it will be a lot easier.
Nice going hope you get to Spain safe and sound and enjoy your time there or will you be in other parts of Europe too if you are hope you get to Ireland 😁
Don’t you need a spacer between the brake shoes (or maybe not because they are not hydraulic)? And shouldn’t the tires be a bit deflated? Or is there sealant inside? I think the rotors would be less vulnerable to bending if placed in the center, inside the triangle. I like this style of bike bag but one thing to keep in mind is that if it looks too much like a suitcase (good for avoiding extra fees) then it will be treated like a suitcase. This means a few other 40 pound bags can get stacked on top of it, risking crushing it. I think it may be valuable to label this as “fragile, do not crush” and pay a bit more for a bike. Some airlines like TAP don’t charge extra for bikes. Looking forward to your travels.
You must have a LOT of patience 😁 Ain't no way I would do all that. I would just rent a bike to where I am going! Kudos to you! I do have a question, how do you know which countries you can take a bike to without them trying to charge you a customs fee.
There is no a customs fee if you enter with your own material and leave with it. In the past, you could have your valuables registered on your passport but I don’t think this is done anymore-certainly not for bikes. Maybe it is a good idea to take your original sales receipt with you, if the bike looks new, so as to prove that you didn’t buy the bike overseas, when returning.
It will be great to see some travel video from you guys. I love your channel, but all of the exotic parts reviews, while interesting, are mostly not even available in my neck of the woods (or affordable).

Also if hit from the non drive side, it can load the threads and potentially strip them. Def need a tube over the axle.

Have the same case. I’d say it was worth it just being able to ride the subway, bus, and regular cabs on my last trip to Japan.
Tip for reassembly when using a case like the Post Transfer: use a label maker to make 3-4inch label strips with two arrows -->
