I have an old, unmarked swampy green vise that my dads friend gave him, and I would love to find out where it came from and what brand it is, if I manage to give you the markings on it, can you look into it?

Cody, your right about the importance of a good vise! I inherited a 1949 Wilton 6 inch torpedo style vise from my Grandfather. I completely restored it and was able to replace the jaws too. I used extra thick O-rings on the adjustment handle as bumpers like the newer vises have. Every time I use it I remember my Grand Dad and all he taught me. He was a Wisconsin diary farmer born in 1900. He was a great story teller!

Thanks Cody for this video. I had no idea that mounting a bench vise on the corner of the bench, and also close to the edge, is very important, to get full functionality. Whenever I start a project, even a minor one like installing a bench vise, I spend 30 minutes or so watching TH-cam videos. It's helpful videos like yours that make TH-cam so informative.

What a thoughtful gift for Jeff that you created, along with help from viewer Mike. We've been going through a series of messages this month in our church. I think the most relevant passage for this gift of generosity could be summed up by the author in 1 John 3:16-18. John is basically saying "Talk is cheap." Let's not just say we love one another, let's demonstrate that we love one another by being generous to each other. This is one of the reasons that I love supporting this channel, because you are generous with your time and your moments of your family, being a beacon of good stewardship and an example of a godly man in a world full of despair.

I've watched hundreds of Wranglerstar videos and this one, for some strange reason is my favorite. For these reasons: 1. A generous donation to the project. 2a- the shot of having to feed wire while welding 2b. A "change of plans" by using hole punches and then grabbing the plasma cutter. 3. Trying to hold the washer without vise grips first 4. the surprise visit for the surprise (so wholesome) 5. the "test" using your nicknamed cheater bar and just body weight. 6 the quick math and the advice that is always you can do it confidence and 7. the blessings and prayers ending. This video is a shorter one, but it packs in all of the wholesome -human- do-it yourself genuine content that I've grown to love. I also notice it was just a few weeks before the pandemic-mania really started. anyway I have learned so much from watching your content- I feel it makes me a better man, husband, and father just to soak in your experiences you've so graciously shared. Thank you Mr. W (and Mrs W.) for sharing it all. Merry Christmas to you and your family and may Christ's love be more plentiful this new year. God bless.

I got a vintage Wilton 6in vise that looks similar to that one but it's made in the USA. I got it on offerup, the guy advertised it for $100 and I offered $50 thinking he would say no and he said okay. I degreased it with acetone and sanded it with a flap disc on an angle grinder. Then painted it with international harvester red tractor paint rattle can. I mounted it with half inch diameter carriage bolts which looks really nice and holds it really well. Mine is mounted through wood though but it is an inch and a half thick so it's pretty solid.
The trick to getting a good deal on OfferUp is when you see something don't make an offer right away if it just got put on. Wait for about 1 to 2 weeks and then make a lowball offer. They will either accept it or give their own offer which will usually be pretty fair. The way people try to price some of them things on there you kind of have to do that.

I made a bench out of dead tree carcasses a couple years ago. I ended up dropping close to $400 on it. It is way over built, on leveling casters, has my router table and mitre saw on opposite sides of the table to provide extra support. The height is perfect for my table saw and planer to use it as an out-feed table.
Top has 3/4" MDF and then a 3/4" maple plywood on top. Works great, wish I had built it out of steel now that I've gotten in to welding. Might ought to see if I can sell it and recoup some of my money to build a nice steel one.

    @krissfemmpaws1029 4 ปีที่แล้ว

I fully agree a good bench and vice is a first must have in a shop space.
There is one small thing that should have been added under the vice. That was a support wedled to the outer edge of the sheet steel down to the leg of the bench. A 6 inch piece of 1/4 x 2 flat bar is all it needs to be. If you want to get fancy drill some 3/4 inch holes in the leg where the flat bar would be. Slip the bar inside the leg and up to the sheet. Weld the bar to the sheet and plug weld the holes in the leg.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know it may not be needed... but it will keep that end from flexing under abuse most shop vices tend to see.

My similar 6" Wilton purchased some 39 years earlier, and still my only garage shop vice, required an immediate upgrade. This one may not. I used the largest diameter grade 8 bolts inserted up from the bottom, with washers and grade 8 nuts on top, in order to solidly lock the swivel top section in place. Only then with a box wrench, could I apply the needed tightening force that the T-handles with a cheater could not, as they bent. I ground away the bolt head interference underneath, rather than use a smaller diameter bolt. Also, the protruding interference was reduced.

I like to strap a length of 4x4 or 4x6 under the vise so you can bang with less noise and vibration. Make the post a very snug fit between the concrete and the plate the vise is bolted to. It also prevents your steel bench leg from chipping the concrete when you bang on it.

i have 2 vises one mounted normal position the other is mounted vertical so the tighting lever is on top this works great for holding flat plate when cutting it

To locate the vice mount, first clamp two pieces of stock in the jaws so they protrude just below the mount plate. Bump them into the front edge of the bench and rotate the base plate so that the holes will be parallel with the edge. This alignment will provide quick vertical clamping of work pieces for your projects . The bench edge and back jaw make one vertical axis and you can simply plumb your workpiece to the other vertical axis using the square side of the vices slide ( front jaw shaft). When properly set up its handy, fast and accurate

I know a guy and hes a welder. You should see his bench. Its probably 25 feet long and the top is minimum a 3 inch thick plate that goes full length. Needless to say that he has a little 120 pound anvil that he really doesnt need.
I have 3 anvils but id like one more...

Looks like to tightened the base bolts to "bug eye" torque (till your eyes bug out). But was that Imperial or Metric "bug eye"? Thanks for another great video!

2:03 Have never seen a NEW Wilton bench vise before. They were always well used or restored.
2:39 It is most important that the fixed face of the vice is just beyond the bench edge as you stated. If mounting on the corner be sure to check the fixed face gap at the other overhang position if there is one. Side note: When designing a bench pay extra attention to where and how the vice will be mounted and try to get a leg directly under it. I've seen wooden benches that had the vice leg was a metal pipe or square tubing because of the intended use of the vice whereas the rest of the table did not need that strength.
