I really enjoyed this one and I also got chance to try out my new milling machine. I was going to add checkering to the jaws but decided to see how they go without and I can always add that later on. I should also mention for anyone that doesn't know, a vice (like this one I've restored) is spelled 'vice' here in Australia and not spelled wrongly.

For the evaporust bath you can also just stick the vise in a bag, place that in a bucket of water, keeping it out of the bag, and then add the evaporust into the bag with the vise, the water will help hold the evaporust right against the vise and it’ll prevent too much excess space around it so you’ll get full coverage😊

    As a machinist, I agree:
1st Blondihacks is a great channel
2nd having the faces of the vise jaws square isn't terribly important. Having the opposite faces parallel is more important but even then these are jaws for a bench vise, so as long as the jaw will close nicely with no gap you're golden.
    Great video!

Neil is the man. His work is quality, he is honest about the effort he puts into work tools for what the tool will truly be needed for and yes he makes mistakes. He's a man of craft and his talent comes from time, trial and error in new adventures and learning from it. The gift from this man and channel is letting us explore with him and see his craft. And the most important.. we get to see how he ventures into unknowns with excitement, lessons and honesty into projects like this that isn't his rhelm.
I feel like I'm sitting across the bench from him trying to figure things out and feeling good about it when I watch his content.
All the respect in the world for this man.

I fully agree with you review! I like his perfectionism. The first set of jaws he made, a couple mm short on one side, would work just fine, but they would bother Neil every time he used the vise, hence he had to make a second set, even though if it wastes material (spent on the first set). As a perfectionist myself, I fully understand the feelings that must have been going through his head.

Once again a great video. Thank You for showing all the steps in your restoration. I find lots of videos that miss steps or lose footage. It also is of great help when using cleaners or chemicals / products that you explain their purpose since terminology and products vary from country to country. Also very nice that you showed how to touch after painting when you were not satisfied with the result. As always I’ve learned a lot that is applicable to other projects.

Can I swear? I'll blank it out tho!!.... That was f*****g superb. It wasn't one of those ''perfect-no-problems-encountered'' videos. You showed the minor screw ups when making the jaws too short. You showed the part where you re-filled the metal and had to re-paint. You told us that bolts were too short and will be replaced. You mentioned you are still learning with the milling machine, but having fun along the way. This was a real video. And one I appreciate for the bloody good work at the end of the job, the honesty, and for showing the ''mistakes'' you made along the way. All the best. Dogue.

Neil, when I restored a similar sized dawn vice last year I took the opportunity to put a thrust bearing on the front face under the screw. Since you now have a milling machine you could make a recess for the thrust bearing and make it seat perpendicular to the handle. Welcome to the multi medium world; now get ready to start shelling out on tooling for the mill !

Those will effectively be soft jaws because of the mild steel. They'll be good to hold most things. You could make another set out of copper or brass to hold delicate surfaces and keep the old jaws as they are hardened and will be good to get a really good grip on something if you're not worried about marking the surface.

I love watching BlondiHacks! I don't even do metal work/milling but it's just enjoyable to watch her precision so I do it anyway lol.

Nicely done Neil, but I thought you were going to cross-hatch the jaws on your mill. Also, I like the shout out to Quinn's channel. She does some pretty cool stuff.

Restoration is a winner, looks a million times better 👍
One thing I can't figure out though, what's the purpose of the spring in the vice?

Nice job! Loved your spring compressor, and who hasn't at one time or another used their vice as a press? Good plug for Quinn and Sprocket! She's a talented machinist, and Sprocket is, ... well Sprocket!

I'm surprised to see there are 84 people so far who disliked this video - just wow. This is such an amazing video to watch and so much to learn.

Cleaning the weld splatter with the grinder turned it into a mirror! You did a cracking job on the vise Neil and going forward I'm sure we will see some pretty Stella thing's being done with your milling machine!!! As always buddy 💯% 👍 🇬🇧.

Nice resto, and good to see you got a milling machine. That’ll open up new options for making things. Quinn’s mill skills videos are brilliant, probably the best on TH-cam.

I have my wife's grandfather's vice that I need to do this to. His was on a swivel base, and I've got to find the replacement bolts for it. Not sure what the bolts are called, but they have the metal rod that goes through the head to tighten/loosen. They were pretty bent up when I got it.

I bought at 40 liter ultrasonic unit. I have used EVAPO-RUST in the ultrasonic tank. It would clean a vise like that in under 10 minutes. I have cleaned many of the parts for restoration of my five 1800s camel-back drill presses. I needed one of every size so I could truly call myself a nut or collector. The smallest is a Canedy Otto at 17 kilos. The largest is a WF and John Barnes at over a half ton. They are all
    in active duty.
