Busted Vise Restoration

- Welcome to my restoration channel! In this restoration video I purchased some old machines vises at scrap price. I bought 4 vises for around $30 USD. This vise is a “Brown 6 2”. It was in pretty rough shape. It was busted, cracked, and had a bunch of holes, besides all of the rust. I think this turned out to be a great vise restoration.
THE RESTORATION PROCESS
I dismantled the vise then used a parts washer to clean them up before sandblasting them. The screws where sanded to give them a brushed finish. The handle was straightened in a vise. The handle and threaded rod were hot blued. The brass threaded bushing was sandblasted then cleaned up with the file, sand paper, and scotch bright. The casted sliding part of the vise was cracked in multiple spots. I drilled a hole at the back of the crack to stop the crack from running. I then cut into the crack to make a groove to fill with weld. We filled the drilling holes with weld after heating the part up. After welding we put the parts in sand-blasting media to slow down the cooling process to help prevent cracking. After the parts were welded, they were sanded, ground, filed. I filled some imperfections with JB Weld. I primed, painted, and clear coated. The finish is a nice metallic blue. I greased the table and sliding area.
This vise will be put to good use, and I think it turned out nice.

Blessings! 👍
Am I the only one who saw the mouse?????
👀
No one saw the black mouse.
No you're not, @pauldunn7813! I also saw it, if only for a brief moment!
1:28 I was like "What?!" 😂
Ahh the good ol fake mouse edited into the vlog
wow you are silly :D Love the different sounds when sandblasting. Came back here from the Traveloader, and I am greatful to see someone restoring real stuff and not things that were deliberately messed up and rusted and such. Great work, beautiful video, thanks for sharing, Kev!
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the support!
Someone who uses PB Blaster. I love it!!
Do you like Pb blaster over other brands?
The only restoration channel that can handle sped up footage masterfully
Thank you very much! Have a great weekend!
Very Nice Job, It looks brand new.
I love your Sign!
Thanks much! Someone gave it to me.
That color is kickass
Thanks much! I appreciate the view!
Hello everyone from Armenia ✌🏼🇦🇲✌🏼
Greetings!
I saw the mouse too. Really a nice restoration. I wish you would have had a voice to explain. Thank You
Thanks for watching! Voiceless is better for me 😳
The before and after couldn't be more different! Absolutely superb job! I'm glad you saved that from being just another scrapped piece of metal. It's beautiful now!! Thanks for posting this.
Thanks for the feedback! I appreciate it. Have a great week!
Man U are living my dream lol I rebuilt machines for my job I wish I could rebuild everything in my spare time thanks for all the great videos Man
Thanks for the comment!! Appreciate it!
4 vises for $30 is a heck of a deal. Beautiful and meticulous work, well done!
Appreciate that!
@RebuiltRestored that's a great deal...they even threw in a free mouse with your purchase.
Beautifully done. That must be pretty rewarding to have that in your workshop, knowing where the vice came from and the condition it is now in. Very cool. See you on your next project, sir.
Thank you! Yes, I’ll be keeping this around the shop. 👍Thanks for the support! I appreciate it!
You've broken the mouse "house" :D
Finally, a guy who understands primer before paint always. I tend to apply two coats of primer before I paint but that's me. One grey and one red, I alternate which one goes on first depending on the color I use.. Good job!
Thanks much!
Love that blue, mini chuck Lathe is a saviour, great job👍
Yes, it’s pretty handy. Thanks much!!
Nice❤

Beautiful restoration mate! Would much rather buy a piece like this one than a new one - they don't make them like they use to! cheers 🙏🏻
Thank you very much! I appreciate it!
Another picture of pure perfection in the finished product! Keep it up!
Thanks @TheLawnist! I appreciate the view!

You can. I’m no expert myself. Thanks!

Nice refurbishing project. You cleaned it up filled/welded in the holes and made it look new... Thumbs Up!
I appreciate it! Thanks for watching!
Great welding on those cracks too. Most people would have scrapped it. Great job saving and restoring it!
Great job. Love the color you pick.

Great restoration 👏👏
Thank you!
Good job mash'Allah
Thank you!
Amazing job man, God bless you 🙏🏽 🇧🇷😊
Thank you very much! Appreciate it!

Wow! Superb job I must say! You could make a living restoring this stuff! Harbor Freight may appeal to some if you need a tool in a quick pinch, but they just don’t make ‘em like these old “Made in the USA” beast! Great job! By the way… that Snap On floor jack you restored is super nice!!
Thank you very much! I appreciate it!
Your reply is kinda funny as there were several Harbor Freight tools used in this restoration.
Use what you have right?
Try way oil on your slideways, shavings won’t stick as much as they do to grease. Great video!
Thanks for the tip! 👍
Top Marks, as always..! When your sand blasting revealed the set screw, I was like D'uh...super X-Ray spectacles for rust have made removing the brass bushing much easier🤣 lesson learned for all of us...thanks for that. But, I have question: would it be smart, or even possible for that matter, to harden and temper after your welding repairs and after returning the handle to normal..? Would that make the vice/handle too brittle, or is it even worth the effort..? If possible, please let me know, or if anyone else has advice/comments on that idea, please let me know as well...thanks.
I’ve watched our European friends use a mixture of automatic transmission fluid and acetone to break bolts and screws loose. Have you had any experience with this? I myself, have just begun restoring things for fun and nostalgia.
I haven’t had any experience with this. But maybe I will have to look into it. Thanks for the info. Thanks for the comment! 👍
Nice job but what's up with the mice😆😂
Thanks! Mouse?
Fake one edited into the video
Wow. ❤
Thanks for watching!
Belíssimo trabalho. Parabéns.
Thank you! Have a great week!
Nice work. I would like to find one. They are getting expensive
Thanks much. This one came from a machine shop. They were getting rid of a bunch of stuff
Yes works so much better then WD 40 for freeing rusty parts.
Thanks for your feedback!
Fun vids!
Thank you!
Nice job. What is that attachement you used for the brass and the screw polishing you did? On the drill press and on the hand drill. I need one of those...
Thanks!
It’s a mini lathe chuck for a drill. Pretty neat fro little parts. I have a link in my description. You can find them on amazon. Thanks for watching!
@@RebuiltRestored Shoot I missed seeing it there. Thanks for pointing it out.
What a beautiful restoration to add to your collection! Did you mig weld or just use a flux core wire for the welding? What a great piece!
Thank you very much. We used a mig. Thanks for your comment!
Torno danificado restaurado 🔩🔧😉
Thanks for watching!!
hello, i loved the video and i have 2 questions: 1. why did yiu heat the cast befor welding? 2. why did you want the cast to cool down slowly? ty.
The parts are heated to bring the temperature of the part up before hitting it with welding. Welding produces a lot of heat and we want to prevent cracking due to a sudden change in temp. Same for the cooling process, a slow cool down to help prevent the casting from cracking.
Like even before watching the video. What's the story of the mouse( 1.27 ) ??? Lol .
Love from Morocco 🇲🇦
Thank you! I appreciate it. The mouse is just for fun. Kind of dumb but it gets people attention! 👍 thanks for watching! Have a great day!
If your welder has a preflow timer set it to a .5 second when doing tacks to not have the perocity like you did
Thanks for the tip! 👍And thanks for watching!
Wow.
Thanks for the view!
Does anyone knows the name of the blue paint used? Is beautiful
It was a rust oleum metallic blue paint. Thanks much!
Fine restoration! At 9:52, where did you get a mill type chuck like that and who makes it? I also saw you using it on a hand held drill. That is the coolest thing since sliced bread and I must have one!!🖖Never mind where to get one, I went up to your description and found it! I will have one in a few days! I have never seen such an animal,,,,,ever!
Thanks for watching! It is pretty handy for small projects. Glad you found it! Have a great day!
John 3:16. Greatest love story ever told in one verse!
How true. Thanks for the comment! God bless!
7:06 Harbor Freight tool 🤔
I have so many!! 😎
Wonder if its an old Browne & Sharp from Providence, RI.
Not sure. I would like to know more about it
I think it was a mistake to take grease an the Spindel … but over all it looks very nice at the end. Good Job Sir 👍🏽
Thanks! And thanks for watching!
The mouse is xa good touch
Thanks lol
What is your sandblasting media
What paint is being used is it better than powder coating?
They both have their place 👍
what camera and microphone do you use?
I use a Sony A6000 for most of the filming. Some of the close up shots are filmed on a Canon hf g30. Then Canon camera is the only one with an external mic and it is a Rode Video Mic Pro. You can find some info in my description as well. Thanks for watching and have a great week!
🎉🎉🎉
Thanks much!
Do you like baking soda as your primary media?
I’ve never tried baking soda! Thanks for watching!
@@RebuiltRestored what do you prefer or do you have a preference? I love watching some old scrap come back to life it’s amazing to watch.
Would have been inclined to use graphite powder or spray rather than using grease to stop schwarf gumming up the workings
Thanks for the tip!
1:27 😂😂😂
🐭
Мышшшшь!
Not a fan of mice! 👀
did i see a black mouse just now
👀
Я видел мышку
That’s what other people are saying as well! 😉
👍👏👍👏👍👏👍👏👍👏👍👏👍👏🥃🥃🥃
Thanks much! Have a great weekend!
Lol 👀
Nope i seen it
👍
It’s very pretty but the casting patina has been lost. Sorry, just my 2 cents worth.
Thanks for watching!
Loose it!!
I normally love your videos, but to be honest I think this one seemed a bit rushed, you are usually one of the very few who seem to avoid using power tools, but in this one half of the work was done with power tools. Restoration is a delicate job and should only use power tools if it's absolutely necessary, your sandblasting was uneven and spotty in certain places. Slow Down and take your time, I would rather watch an hour long restoration video without power tools than a 20 minute video with them. Take some cues from Odd Tinkering he takes his time and gets a amazing result and I think with a little patience you can be as good if not better
Thanks for the feedback. Have a great week!
Stacking tack welds may make it pretty and all but you are not getting the needed penetration to truly fix the crack.
Thanks for the comment. I obviously edited out the full weld to get away from the brightness of the arc. (e.g. wire starts, cut, resume clip at weld pool or after arc) thanks for watching!
No
Yes
The shaft and handle wasn't properly blued. You didn't get it hot enough.
I could have went hotter. However you don’t want to go red hot or you could run into pealing. The finished product turned out.
Nice paper weight. Looks good but not structurally sound, or true anymore. That would never be on my Mill. Maybe my drill press, but nothing that needs accuracy. And there's paint on the bottom ways!😢
I obviously don’t have a mill or I could have used it on this. And I plan to use it on the drill press. I get that it’s not true as far as to the thousands since I used a grinder to resurface the bed. Lol use what I have not what I don’t have.
I’m guessing he doesn’t have a mill… but I’ll keep watching his videos so maybe someday he can afford one. I’ll bet R&R will get many years of use out of it. I’ll be looking for it in the next vid! Great job! Ignore the negative and keep up the good work.
P.S. Hey Pat, try being a positive influence in life sometime, you might like it!! Just saying. Now have a great day! 😊
Kevin, have you by chance got an email you can be reached at? I couldn't find a contact on your page. I have a set of wrenches that I would like your advice on restoring. Thank you!
Rebuilt.bk@gmail.com
Meh its so 'PRETTY' you will be scared to use it in case you scratch the paint ! :/
Lol true! Almost looks better then my car. 😉Thanks for watching!
Already the sandblasting made this vise unsuitable for use on the machine. Alas, this pile of metal now needs milling at a minimum.
I don’t think so… don’t sweat the small stuff! :D
I’ll be using it! Thanks for watching!
@@RebuiltRestored This is not a question for online debate. It is enough to place the vice on the surface plate and run a dial indicator along it.
