I am going to install the vice this weekend after getting some nuts, bolts, and washers - installations like this seem straight forward at face value BUT 99.999% of the time, I learn something new I'd never even think of when watching videos like this. I've learned the hard way not to try something before asking/learning from someone with more experience than me! Pretty amazing how many people you've helped with such a simple video - thanks for taking the time to do this!
The info you gave about the spade bit, to back off and not push too hard when you get closer to the end of the hole, is great advice. As someone thats only in my first year of woodworking, i can use all the tips and tricks i can get. Great video all around. Thanks.
Another thing you can do if you have the room is hold or clamp a short piece of 2X4 beneath where the bit will break through. You'll get no splinter or break out at all. Two clamps work best, safer too.

After only 12 minutes of instructions in this video, anyone can be drilling holes and tightening bolts at an expert level. I highly recommend this video.
It’s amazing how many people get this totally wrong, some even get the wrong type of vice. Like yourself I like my machine vice on a corner, but my wood face vice I like about a foot from the corner to give me that extra bench room for larger pieces. A very useful video for many people.
Enjoyed your vid. Ill be installing my new 6.5 inch vise on my plywood workbench. My plywood measures just a bit under 1". I decided to install it over 1/4" steel plate wirh another strip of plate under the front bolts for extra strength. May be overkill.
This is a great video. Thank you for being so detailed. I did however decide on going with a Capri Tools 1051 series Ultimate Grip Forged Steel Bench Vise. It's manufactured in Taiwan (much better than China), and it's made from forged steel as opposed to cast iron/cast steel (hollow on the inside). More expensive of course (double the price), but I won't have to worry about cracking a jaw as so many people have posted regarding Irwin or Yost cast iron/cast steel vises. Now I just need to decide on going with a 4" or 6" jaw. While my primary needs are for small gun smithing and chain sharpening projects, somehow I get the feeling that 6" is the way to go for those "just in case" projects. 5" would have been ideal, but Capri only makes the vise in 4", 6", and 7" sizes. 7" is definitely way overkill. Again, thank you.

That was a very informative video on how to mount a bench vise. I wish everyone would plan their videos before rolling so that we don't have to labor through time-wasting uh-oh's and do-overs. You had it all planned and everything went well. I mounted a vise in almost identical fashion a few years ago and it went in almost like yours. I have another on order that will have to be mounted outdoors on a concrete post/pad ...hopefully...so that I can take it inside in bad weather(cast iron doesn't like wet things!). This was a very helpful vid.
Nice install. A must have companion for any serious shop. My vice does not have that ability to rotate the jaws like yours but it does rotate 360* around its base😎

I just got a big vise and I ended up gluing down another square of half inch plywood under it. I was afraid that a heavy load or twisting would end up just breaking the single sheet of plywood on my benchtop. I also added another 2x4 brace.

I bought an antique Craftsman made in the USA 5.5” Vise that is in great condition. I went to mount it on my new work bench after measuring the holes in the base at 0.5”. The half inch bolts fit through the holes in the base very snuggly, so snuggly in fact that is gave them about a 80° angle when coming out the bottom of the base. As I could not replicate this angle when drilling the holes in the workbench, I ended up going with 3/8” bolts and hardware. I wish I could use the 1/2”, but I don’t see how without machining the holes in the base to produce 90°. Slightly frustrating and weird. lol

Thank you, after you put the long bolts through the top of the vice you will put the large washer underneath first then the lock washer then the nut. Using a large diameter washer keeps the nut from sinking in to the wood when you tighten it, and the lock washer keeps the nut from unscrewing it self after time.
You only use lock washers between a nut or a bolt and something fixed like your bench (not a wooden one ;-) ) or your vice. It has to bite an unmoveble peace to work. Your large diameter washers may turn round the bolt and so the lock washers cannot fix the nut. Both will turn, too. In your case the pressure of your strong bolts and nuts against the compressed bench-material will hold them in place by the friction of the thread. For the rest: Nice video and sorry for my german english.
Regarding the lock washer, that always goes on after the flat & just before the nut. That said there is a certain direction you want to install the lock washer. Lay the flattest side of the lock washer on your work bench or surface. When you look at split in the lock washer one side will protrude higher than the opposing side. That protrusion is somewhat malformed and sharper than the side on the other side of the split. That protrusion is the side you want the nut to contact first. Tightening the nut flattens out the lock washer and Lockes the nut in place.. If you remove the nut, you can see where the protruding part of the lock washer marred up the underside of the nut once it's in your hand. So, long story short the protrusion part actually locks the nut in place.
Many thanks for your vice advice. I'm just wondering why so many are mounted on the LEFT side of the bench ??? Are most workshop folks left-handed ? Anything to do with political persuasion ? Surely it's neither of these. Is it more practical in some way on the left ? Mine is like yours, but mounted at the RIGHT hand corner of the bench. It has a swivel base like yours, BUT I'm so envious that yours also has vertical swivel.

Don't use lock washers! NASA has found that they're useless against stopping bolts from coming loose. Just use Nyloc nuts instead of regular nuts or use some of those serrated lock washers, but not the split ones that you used in this video! Aside from that, great video! ☺
thank you. i think even my dumbass can install my vise now. mine is a 2 hole with swivel. i do want it on the corner of my bench. i think mine is 1/4in bolts. they dont look as big as yours so mine is less heavy duty but going on a wood bench and should be enough for my usage. im confident now i can install my vise and have the tools to do so
Decent video thanks. I have similar bench set up but I don't want to mount only thru the plywood even with wide washers or a steel plate backing it hammering on things in the vise I'm sure will eventually destroy the plywood or get ripped clean off the bench. Trying to find ideas for strengthening the outside bench corner underneath and most likely to the wall also. I'm no carpenter by trade but maybe I'm expecting too much from a 2x4 or 2x6 frame to hold up against beating on things in the vise. Any ideas or suggestions much appreciated
You could double up on the ply wood or use 2x6 or 2x10 for the top and 4x4 for the legs, that will hold up to most pounding, and make sure the 4x4 is directly under the vice.
Do most vises come with nuts, washers, bolts and lock washers or do you usually have to buy them separate? Also, I'm mounting to a solid piece of 1inch wood, should I add another piece of wood on each side of the table to sandwich the 1inch thick piece of wood? EDIT: The small blooper bit at the end of the video was funny, reminds me of me when I'm recording a video lol.
What if my table top (3/4 plywood) doesn’t hang over the edge of the frame? Mine is flush with the 2x4 frame so I can’t put bolts on the forward two holes of the vise. Could I just use screws to hold the two forward holes into the 2x4 frame? Like half inch diameter screws?
He specifically says in the video that he chose plywood instead of solid wood because that's all that he needed for how he was going to use this bench.
@@SuzukiKid400 I've have to mount on plywood before. If the whole bench isn't solid wood, I'd suggest sandwiching some solid wood plates on top and under the bench, then mounting to that, helping to manage/spread forces.
I recommend a nice steel stab to distribute the weight across the workbench and have a thicker slab of table top on a bigger vise.Don't forget toe use Grade 8 or higher on hardware. Great video tho!

Yeah we have a Lowe's Lowe's and Home Depot but I love going there because I can buy one or two in a really friendly and they know who we are and my top the stainless steel one 1 inch wood underneath so I'm just gonna mounted on top I'll let you know how it turns out I'll send your picture
Buy your bolts, washers & nuts at Tractor Supply you can get them buy the pound and they sell grade 5 and 8 also. Wilton recommends grade 5 bolts for vises which sounds like a good idea.
Hello from England! Your workshop looks bigger than my living room! I only have a shed 10"x 6" and my home made bench is only 3' x 2'. Got any suggestions as to size/type of vice I should get? I'll be using it for wood, but also chainsaw maintenance and hand tool renovation. I'm left-handed so maybe place it on the right side. Any thoughts?
Well it seems like you need a smaller machinist vise and a wood working vise but you're limited in table top space. That's a call you're going to have to make. Whether you mount the vise on the right or left on the table, you have to mount it where it will work best for you and space you have. It all depends on what you are trying to hold with the vise. If you're working with wood, you'd want smooth but with steel, you would use the jaws with the gripper on them.
RaymundoRock The outside diameter of the washer was too big so I had to grind it. But if you can find a smaller diameter washer then you don't need to grind them.
Actually yes, the top washer prevents the head of the bolts from grinding into the cast iron housing and protects the finish to a degree. On the washers one side of the washer has sharper outer edges, the other side the edges are smoother more rounded. I put the smoother rounded side down to minimize paint loss. Just my thoughts.
i won't have room for working at the corner so can't fit it to the corner. my work bench goes right to the wall either side. looks like im installing near the middle. not sure i'll need a swivel vice in that case....? would it still be useful
You can mount the vice anywhere that works for you. It's always good to have a swivel vise, you never know when you'll have to move your clamped part around.
How has that Irwin vise hold up? I'm thinking of getting a Irwin 4 1/2 Cast Iron Light Duty vise from Lowes or a Bessey 4 1/2 Light Duty vise from Home Depot. They are almost the same price and I want to use it for things like removing brass from power cables.

@@deatharg It all depends on what you clamp in the vice. If your clamping a large metal pipe and trying to bend it or hammering something with a 5lb sludge hammer, then yes it could break. But holding down something to work on it will be fine.
I personally think it's a decent and versatile vice for anyone to use and I'm very happy with it. Harbor freight sale one that looks just like it but stay away from their vises because they use inferior metal from china and will break when hit with a hammer.

Hello my friend, the distance from center to center is about 4 7/8 (4.875) inch or 124mm hope this helps.
That is one BEAUTIFUL huge workspace. I wonder what it looks like now, 6 years later.

Good, it's always better to add more reinforcement before adding a vice.
Yeah I was thinking the same for his vise as well. I got 1/2 ply on top of 1/2 MDF on a 6 in vise and want to add some 1x2 's as a brace.

I'm no carpenter by trade but maybe I'm expecting too much from a 2x4 or 2x6 frame to hold up against beating on things in the vise. Any ideas or suggestions much appreciated
You could double up on the ply wood or use 2x6 or 2x10 for the top and 4x4 for the legs, that will hold up to most pounding, and make sure the 4x4 is directly under the vice.
Do most vises come with nuts, washers, bolts and lock washers or do you usually have to buy them separate?
Also, I'm mounting to a solid piece of 1inch wood, should I add another piece of wood on each side of the table to sandwich the 1inch thick piece of wood?

No you'll have to buy the bolts, nuts, and washers. I would just screw a 5/8 plywood on top of the 1 inch board table top should be enough.

What if my table top (3/4 plywood) doesn’t hang over the edge of the frame? Mine is flush with the 2x4 frame so I can’t put bolts on the forward two holes of the vise. Could I just use screws to hold the two forward holes into the 2x4 frame? Like half inch diameter screws?

He specifically says in the video that he chose plywood instead of solid wood because that's all that he needed for how he was going to use this bench.
@@SuzukiKid400 I've have to mount on plywood before. If the whole bench isn't solid wood, I'd suggest sandwiching some solid wood plates on top and under the bench, then mounting to that, helping to manage/spread forces.

@@Jarod1941 I disagree. You can always change the corner design to incorporate solid wood for a vise mount. Stop criticizing the guy.
I recommend a nice steel stab to distribute the weight across the workbench and have a thicker slab of table top on a bigger vise.Don't forget toe use Grade 8 or higher on hardware. Great video tho!
Good idea on the table top. I have a roll around 4x8 table that I would like to do that to so I can weld on it. Thanks
A good thick table top will do no harm but what he has is still good enough for working on.

Yeah we have a Lowe's Lowe's and Home Depot but I love going there because I can buy one or two in a really friendly and they know who we are and my top the stainless steel one 1 inch wood underneath so I'm just gonna mounted on top I'll let you know how it turns out I'll send your picture

Buy your bolts, washers & nuts at Tractor Supply you can get them buy the pound and they sell grade 5 and 8 also. Wilton recommends grade 5 bolts for vises which sounds like a good idea.

Hello from England! Your workshop looks bigger than my living room! I only have a shed 10"x 6" and my home made bench is only 3' x 2'. Got any suggestions as to size/type of vice I should get? I'll be using it for wood, but also chainsaw maintenance and hand tool renovation. I'm left-handed so maybe place it on the right side. Any thoughts?
Well it seems like you need a smaller machinist vise and a wood working vise but you're limited in table top space. That's a call you're going to have to make. Whether you mount the vise on the right or left on the table, you have to mount it where it will work best for you and space you have. Is it okay to use a vise that has smooth Jaws or should I buy an advice with gripper Jaws?
It all depends on what you are trying to hold with the vise. If you're working with wood, you'd want smooth but with steel, you would use the jaws with the gripper on them.
Nice! Are the top washers (the ones you ground) really necessary?
RaymundoRock The outside diameter of the washer was too big so I had to grind it. But if you can find a smaller diameter washer then you don't need to grind them.
RaymundoRock No I guess the top washers are not absolutely necessary.
Actually yes, the top washer prevents the head of the bolts from grinding into the cast iron housing and protects the finish to a degree. On the washers one side of the washer has sharper outer edges, the other side the edges are smoother more rounded. I put the smoother rounded side down to minimize paint loss. Just my thoughts.
i won't have room for working at the corner so can't fit it to the corner. my work bench goes right to the wall either side. looks like im installing near the middle. not sure i'll need a swivel vice in that case....? would it still be useful
You can mount the vice anywhere that works for you. It's always good to have a swivel vise, you never know when you'll have to move your clamped part around.

Why did you use washers on top?
So the bolt heads don't dig into the vice.
How has that Irwin vise hold up? I'm thinking of getting a Irwin 4 1/2 Cast Iron Light Duty vise from Lowes or a Bessey 4 1/2 Light Duty vise from Home Depot. They are almost the same price and I want to use it for things like removing brass from power cables.
My vice is holding up great and I use it regularly.

Yes as long as the toolbox is big and strong enough.
@@petebeasttexashomesteading my worry is that if it's not supported properly the wood top will crack and eventually break. its a Yukon 47 inch long toolbox from harbor freight.
@@deatharg It all depends on what you clamp in the vice. If your clamping a large metal pipe and trying to bend it or hammering something with a 5lb sludge hammer, then yes it could break. But holding down something to work on it will be fine.

I personally think it's a decent and versatile vice for anyone to use and I'm very happy with it. Harbor freight sale one that looks just like it but stay away from their vises because they use inferior metal from china and will break when hit with a hammer.

I use it often but I'm not too rough with it and I like the fact that I can swivel it around when I need to. It's holding up great.

He doesn't show the order of the flat washer and the lock washer. Which one goes in which order? I would suppose going from the top down, flat washer, lock washer then nut?
Correct, Flat washer first then lock washer then nut. I do mention it at 6:30
