A tip for storing your sharpie is to keep it ink side down so it doesn't dry out, it's a tip I was taught when learning to survey, the boss was always on about little things like that. We use the thick king sized sharpies and I can still remember him saying "Those things cost $3 per sharpie, if I catch you ink side up you owe me $3."

Two additions that have been incredibly helpful
A pair of vise grips - heavy yes but worth it, I’ve lost count of how many random staples I’ve pulled with them or other odd uses
A hex shank, impact rated drill bit that is sized for whatever screws you’re running. It’ll run in whatever drill or impact you have on you and saves you from climbing down a ladder when you realize you should pre-drill something

Shout out to Cody! I have been following you almost ten years back now. Watching your back to basics, building your first homestead and living a more fulfilling life inspired me to get in touch with my ranching heritage and make a living of it. To get out of the rat race and live what many consider to be a hard life. In the face of everything going on today I am prepared as can be and have my family well situated in a “strategic location” on the ranch. I believe hardship is coming but pray and hope for the best to come from it. You and Mrs W helped my wife and I take the steps necessary to really live our lives together and work hard. God bless you Sir.

When it comes to utility knives, everyone has their favorite.. Stanley classic, various DeWalt or Milwaukee, Roberts Fatso, Orcan fixed. etc. Me personally, I prefer the Lenox Gold or the Lutz 357 - both are tool-less retractables with blade storage and are tough\sturdy and easy to change blades. I keep the Lenox in my rig because it's slim and its been there a long time and i keep Lutz 357s in various tool bags\workbench. If anyone is looking for a knife, I would recommend picking up a Lutz 357... It is sturdy, fits the hand well, and is super easy to change the blade. I bought one and liked it so much I went back a week later and bought another.

When my wife and I built our house 26 years ago we grabbed a couple of all leather craftsman tool belts from Sears. They're still in great shape too, other than my wife's having subfloor adhesive on the tape measure holster from leaning too far over the joists where I had just applied the adhesive. Years later her work went to volunteer at a Habitat for Humanity build site so I got her tool belt out and loaded it up for the day. Every time the site supervisor would ask "Hey, does anyone have a _____?" My wife had it in her tool belt and no one else did. They started by framing up a partition wall in the basement and when the site supervisor laid out the wall and my wife spoke up and pointed out "Shouldn't the bottom plate be green treated?" I wish I could have been there that day. When they were done one of her coworkers asked what she was doing working in an office when she could be working in construction. She was by my side every moment building our house, just the two of us and we had a lot of fun. When we bought our hammers, also from Sears, I got a framing hammer and a finishing hammer for the wife so we'd have both, the cashier was being kind of creepy/smart alecky with my wife. When he asked if she selected a left handed hammer or a right handed one I could tell she had more than enough and saw her grip the handle tighter and correctly figured that she was considering braining the guy with it so I put my hand on her arm to settle her down. To this day I don't think he had a clue how close he came as she's a real pistol when she gets mad, especially when she was younger. Ah, good times!

This is not a criticism but just an observation about your hammer placement on your belt. When I was working, i worked on an electrical overhead crew. One of the the old timers told me not to put anything in the back of the back loop of your lineman's belt. If you fell that hammer or wrench is right by your tail bone or your back bone. Maybe fine for walking around but carpenters work off the ground were there is a falling possibility. I know a lot of people have done it for a long time with out any problem, but all it takes is to fall one time. You could make the same argument over eye protection but now a days everyone uses eye protection PPE. Great info on the bags thanks. Bruce from the city of Orange in Orange county California.

I gotta tell you... I upgraded from occidental to diamondback. I was running the occidental adjust to fit comfort series pro framers for years... and I do really like them. But.... my diamondback grrandes are better.
The diamondbacks are a bit lighter. Plus the buckle system allows for precise adjustment of the belt strap (the rod through leather hole style can only synch to so many spots... frustrating when i want to be tight). And the hidden side hammer sheath really allows for all sorts of mobility advantage... especially like in and out of the lift. And without leather and all, no worries in or out of wetness if need be... dries right out.
Its overall just a better rig, for me at least...

I had a Kline belt I got fresh out of high school, because I was lucky enough to go to a vocational school in high school where I graduated high honors, and I recieved a scholarship from a local HVAC supply company to basically take $2,000 there money and buy as many tools as I wanted. I got gages, screw and nut drivers, a multimeter, strippers, and my tool belt which really came in handy when putting up ducts.
