    I have one of these(Arcade Box),and for the price of £40 it’s fantastic. I grew up in the arcades in the 80’s and early 90’s so to play most of my favourite arcade games is amazing.Also going back to the SNES is also amazing.

    Great videos! I’ve watched two of yours now. Love the style of your videos and reviews.
    I have a question: I’m new to the HDMI plug and play emulation boxes. Which one would you recommend for 2023? There are so many to choose from and seems like a bit of a minefield.
    What’s important to me is:
    - User interface.
    - Little to no duplicates.
    - I enjoy the tinkering of specs and settings if I need to.
    If you could suggest one to have a look at that would be appreciated.
    Thanks for your videos!

    Can't lie, I've had my share of these android game boxes and have finally switched to the respectively priced mini PCs where I add RETROBAT to boot from Power On. My old android boxes turned out to only end up being good for all the roms that came with it . 🤷🏾‍♂️💯

    I find the Hyper Base Mix more appealing to me to get a sense of having a rather complete list of game preservation on a drive but this is nice for being able to actually play them at a friends house. Wish it had a dedicated micro-sd slot for the drive though as playing two player games will get annoying with a dongle... The Doom Test is good, but for Arcade game lists I do the "Numan Athletics" test. A cyberpunk futuristic olympics game with super human characters. It's so extremely obscure, that if the list has it, it means it's probably going to have many, many others. --

    Best Retro games ever (IMHO) are the Metal Slug series. I never had one of those Arcades in my area, so I never played it. I also would have never dreamed of asking my parents to get me a Neo Geo system for Christmas. They were crazy expensive and I never knew a single person who ever owned one.
    Most fun Arcade game I ever played was the Tempest game. That thing was so addicting!

    I wanted to try such a retro game console machine last year like this in the video, but if my desktop computer's CPU (Intel Core i5-9600KF) is powerful enough to run and play almost any game published from any game console generations, Ihad to let go of the idea of buying it.
    However, after one of your videos about "Hyper Base Mini", I became interested in the Linux-based operating system called Batocera, which can be used to better organize retro video games, even fan modifications (such types with new levels, graphics elements and sounds). I recently got a Kingston Datatraveler Max 512GB USB Stick and I thought that would be a very good idea for playing some PS1/N64/Dreamcast/Gamecube/Wii games. :)
    My all-time favorite games are the first three Sonic The Hedgehog games, I really like the music of all Sonic Zones, even the least good Labyrinth Zone's music is chilling. :D

    The most famous Canadian geek had a show about TV boxes preset with Kodi, malware included. My gripe with that video was, he never actually showed these boxes that don't come with Kodi preconfigured, or devices like this one. Did you maybe see that video? Maybe there's malware on SCX too? Or maybe not?
    You have SCX in your DIY cabinet, did you take it out of the shell to increase cooling maybe?

    • @TechDweeb
      @TechDweeb  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I saw it. Like he said in the vid, all of those boxes had the same chip, and the same build of android, so the info is not directly comparable with these emulation consoles. And like he said it may just be that these companies are all using the same image without intent on making use of the exploits, rather than them specifically trying to steal your info.
      The difference here is that these emulation consoles aren't meant to have your netflix or google password on them, you don't buy them to use as android boxes. They boot a custom image of emulation station and you don't need to connect them to your network or put in any of your personal info. I'd be weary of putting my google password into a box like this, I'm weary of that on most cheap emulation consoles including handhelds, but for emulation, nah, they're benign.
      No I didn't mod my SCX in any way. It performs as well as I need it to in my cabinet, I don't even bother with 3d stuff there. I just play old arcade games mostly, with a smattering of gameboy and snes stuff.

    • @youzernejm
      @youzernejm ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm aware of the Emuelec, but some people will try and use it as an android box. Even for emulation, Drastic is still the best on Android - and still paid. I don't care about ds on TV, some people might though. This was just one example.

    I see the listing now says 82,000 games... I wonder if they de-duplicated it or just counted better? It would be interesting to see how many there REALLY are, but de-duplication is tedious, even with a tool to do checksum compares and *make sure* they're duplicates before deletion.

    • @TechDweeb
      @TechDweeb  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It would make your game lists cleaner but it wouldn't free up much space, the duplicates are all on the older systems, and those systems barely take up any room on the drive. The storage hogs are the bigger games like PS1, saturn, dreamcast, etc. I think you'd be better off deleting the larger games that don't run well (like the psp games that don't perform well) and putting on more PS1 & Saturn etc.

Or what if I want only ONE copy of Harry Potter on the GBA, just the english north american release? But then someone from europe would say the EUR version would be better because it has multiple languages. One guy might prefer to have 500 ps1 games without music, rather than having only 40 with music. That's why the only way to really get a 'perfect' device is to make it yourself.

    • @TechDweeb
      @TechDweeb  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't think it's a problem here. Those boxes all used the same custom build of android. This isn't booting to android, it's booting to emuelec, and you don't even need to connect it to your network or put in any of your passwords etc. If you were going to boot into android and then login to google and netflix or whatever, then yeah I'd say be worried. But as an emulation console, nah, it's fine.

    It probably gets better frame rates at 720P on some cores and none of these games are even 720P native so why lower your performance by setting 1080P? Pointless to change those settings.

    • @TechDweeb
      @TechDweeb  ปีที่แล้ว

      Because it makes the menu & UI items all blurry. Emulation frontends and systems should be run at native resolution and the emulated games themselves can be run at their lower (native, on their platform) resolutions. No better framerates running games at 720p resolution vs 1080p (as long as the cores are emulating the games at the same resolution).
