    Lyrics:
And you know it's time to go
Through the sleet and driving snow
Across the fields of mourning to a light that's in the distance.
And you hunger for the time
    Time to heal, 'desire' time
And your earth moves beneath your own dream landscape.
    On borderland we run.
I'll be there, I'll be there tonight
    A high-road, a high-road out from here.
The city walls are all come down
The dust a smoke screen all around
See faces ploughed like fields that once
    Gave no resistance.
And we live by the side of the road
On the side of a hill as the valleys explode
    Dislocated, suffocated
The land grows weary of it's own.
    O com-away, o com-away, o-com, o com-away, I say I
    O com-away, o com-away, o-com, o com-away, I say I
Oh, oh on borderland we run
And still we run, we run and don't look back
I'll be there, I'll be there
    Tonight, tonight
I'll be there tonight, I believe
    I'll be there so high
    I'll be there tonight, tonight.
    Oh com-away, I say, o com-away, I say.
The wind will crack in winter time
    This bomb-blast lightning waltz.
No spoken words, just a scream
Tonight we'll build a bridge across the sea and land
See the sky, the burning rain
She will die and live again tonight.
And your heart beats so slow
Through the rain and fallen snow
Across the fields of mourning to a light that's in the distance.
Oh, don't sorrow, no don't weep
For tonight at last I am coming home.
    I am coming home.

Chris Martin (Coldplay): "I don't buy weekend tickets to Ireland and hang out in front of their gates, but U2 are the only band whose entire catalogue I know by heart. The first song on The Unforgettable Fire, "A Sort of Homecoming", I know backward and forward-it's so rousing, brilliant and beautiful. It's one of the first songs I played to my unborn baby".

@crook district, I think more than any other band, that many of there songs are better live but I also like the studio versions in a different way. An example of this is streets have no name and bad from the rattle and hum movie. At first listen the live versions blow the studio versions away with more intensity and more directness but the studio versions have a subtlety that I also love.

In '87 U2 rolled through Vancouver, BC with the Joshua Tree Tour. During the set they played a long, searing rendition of "Bad" and 13 year old me was in awe. Up until then The Joshua Tree album and the War album were my primary points of reference for their music, so when I discovered The Unforgettable Fire because of "Bad" I was fully invested. Two years later I was seeing a girl who was 3 years older than me who played Wide Awake In America, on vinyl, on repeat. Through her I was introduced to the iconic live version of "Bad" that was a close approximation to the 11 or so minutes of euphoria I had witnessed two years prior. And I was also introduced to this live version of "A Sort of Homecoming" that elevated the studio version from UF. Those times were magical. Making out with an older girl in her apartment, while Bono sang to us "...And you hunger for the time
, Time to heal, 'desire' time...". In 2017, U2 returned to Vancouver with the Joshua Tree Tour again, and during that set they played an updated version of "...Homecoming", and I was suddenly young again as the euphoria, mixed with lush nostalgia, washed over me once more. This version of "...Homecoming" will always be close to my heart as I travel through life, now older and wiser, "...across the fields of mourning, to light that's in the distance..."

He still has that guitar. It's one of his favorites. He broke it out recently, when recording their new album. They didn't want him to, because they didn't want that old U2 sound, but the Edge felt the song called for it. It is very unique and works so well with his style of playing. He likes creating tones that just ring out and that guitar can do it like no other. He has other Gibson Explorers, but that particular one he loves.

    • @douglasownbey656

He also uses alot of effects as well, constantly trying to come up with new sounds. His guitar tech, Dallas Schu, said he averages at leat four different effects on many of their songs. It keeps everyone very busy when playing live. He is also very guitar specific. If he recorded a song with a Les Paul, or a Stratocaster, he only uses those guitars for that song when playing live. He has at least two of each kind of guitars he uses. Quite often, Dallas is still getting guitars ready 10 minutes before showtime.

This is really the song (and version) that changed everything for me. I was already a U2 fan from 1980-1984...but when this video and song on the EP were released, I was hooked forever. I wouldn't see my first U2 concert until May of 1987....then I saw many, many U2 shows over the next 30 years (maybe 25 since then) and never saw this song performed. Then in May of 2017...they played it about 3 songs into the set nearly 30 years to the day that I first saw them. A long journey...but totally worth it!

Some of their songs just tend to fall by the wayside when it comes to making the setlist. For a very long time, 40 was dropped and years later they started bringing it back, sometimes adding it at the tail end of another song. One Tree Hill was like that too, but it's a bit tricky for Edge to remember how to play it.

I love the minimalism of the early U2 tour production designs. This particular tour is a very small stage with a few backlights with a hazer to highlight the beams. No moving lights, none of the giant video screens and gimmicks of the Zoo TV/Popmart/360/UV eras, just 4 guys playing good music for thousands of kids in an arena. Even Bono never really cared for it much. I remember him saying sarcastically about the Popmart stage "thank you for building this - whatever this is". Elevation/Vertigo they got back to their roots as far as tour production design goes (don't get me wrong, Willie Williams is a brilliant production designer - Zoo TV/Popmart really upped the ante for concert production) and this is U2 in their element. Once you cut out the giant lemon disco ball, the "in the round" stage, and all the "Spinal Tap" frills and thrills, you just have a great show because of those songs and those four lads who were pals in school and became one of the biggest bands on the planet.

Same. The Unforgettable Fire was my baptism in U2. This song made me love them, and Pride made me a fanatic. I was a kid just starting high school, but U2 brought such honesty to their music. It wasn’t the same throw away “let’s party” or “she loves me” lyrics.

Everybody talks about Bono and his more-than-perfect vocals here, but i want to give some credits to The Edge too. He's not the fastest or most technical guitarist (who cares? it's not speed metal), but he's got a very unique sound (you can recognize his guitar among the millions), he's a very creative songwriter, and he uses his effects not for some selfish guitar solo things, but to blend into the songs, he moves with the band - he's more a band person than a soloist guy -, and what is a very important thing, he is a great vocalist. It may look easy to play this song, but try to sing the vocal lines and play these besutiful, ringing arpeggios at the same time. It's way harder than it seems. He is one of the most important and influental guitarist since the 80s. Forget about Bono's personal stupidnesses and all that shit, The Edge deserves every credit he gets.
