The rock classic, recorded at Olympic studios in Barnes and produced by Steve Brown. This was recorded and released as a stand-alone single but it was included on the band's next album, 'Love'. Though it spent months in the UK charts, and was one of the best selling tracks of the year, it actually never reached the top ten. It was the last release to feature the original Cult drummer Nigel Preston.

I saw this video when I was working security at the Ritz rock/dance club in NYC in the 80's. I loved it. Over the years I forgot who the band was, what the title of the song was, what even the melody was. I wondered and watched out that I might hear this song again even once for 40 years. I just knew that I *loved that song I had heard. Then, I was sitting in a bar watching the last Super Bowl...and viola!! They played it as the soundtrack during the end of a quater leading up to a commercial break! I yelled out "What is the name of this song!!!" And more than 1 person then yelled the title back to me. I found it! After 40 years, now I'm finally happy.
That feeling must’ve felt amazing after discovering it.

The Cult were criminally underrated.
Dude, There is a plethora of a-fricken-mazing music made outside the States. New Zealand, Australian, English, European, even Canadian. Once you go beyond commercial radio, The quality and quantity is astounding.

Fucking right!😂😂😂
Ian Astbury. Adam Ant could have pulled it off back in the day.
Adam Ant

She Sells Sanctuary is the finest rock song ever written. Change my mind.
It’s a very well done song. I put it up there with Subdivisions by Rush.
Stairway to heaven, smoke on the water, sympathy for the 😈, etc.
Ace Of Spades
I would say that this and "How Soon Is Now" are the 2 best songs of the 80s.

I remember my dad blasting this on his bang and olufsen 5500 sound system, then in his L200 pick up. He passed away when I was 11 back in 2014. I’m 21 this year and play this every so often to keep living his memories❤️
Sending Prayers for your Beloved Dad in Heaven 🙏

This is a great song to be "the song". Here's to all the great dads.
It's a great Dad's song.... one of my favourites and hopefully will pass it on to my son like your dad did to you.. very sad for you and feel your loss chin up and keep cherishing them memories
It's one hell of a song. I was just being born when this song came out. It definitely is one of those songs you wish there was an ∞ setting on the volume dial =) We need a rebirth of rock in the next decade-a neo-rock and roll that pays homage to this remarkable genre. Truly talented musicians wrote epics like these, like Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven or Pink Floyd & countless other towering talents back when music had a soul and heart like no other. =)
God I want our triumphalism of the of the days before y2k back. It seemed like the world was becoming a bitchin place where we could do anything and _we could sell sanctuary_
@Sample Rate we definitely did keep it! Amazing set up
Ian's footwork especially at the beginning is classic!!!
Lol
It’s as if those boots took on a life of their own!

Absolutely...
Agreed!!!
I was lucky enough to see them live in the 80's several times - easily in my top 5 bands of all time - blew me away
Let's be honest, this song was iconic then and iconic NOW!
That driving beat!🤗
Its undefeated
Absolutely yes
Yes it is! Simply amazing!
Amazing!!!!!!!
God I love this track. Quite possibly the greatest rock song of all time.
Not the greatest, but top 10 of all time definitely
😂 definitely not the greatest, 😂 not with Led Zepp and Zappa The Floyd, Stones, , Caravan, god , the list is endless. It's too basic and easy, , where so many bands were musical geniuses, but I do like it; it so sums up a time and place, memories , Camden, my Goth friends so amazing being photographed in Portobello Rd for magazines, no money exchanged in those days, and me a boho hippy girl whose tough goth mates accepted !!!
who's still listening to this in 3049, there is no more oxygen but its okay we have this music

Sound of my youth

Two things:
1 - The lead singer, Ian Astbury, looked very much and channeled so much of the late Freddy Mercury.
2 - Thanks to the "With Honors", it led me to delve into The Cult discography.
Ian Astbury' s voice sounds like Pete Burns of Dead Or Alive, wow !!!! 🤩
This is one of those songs where you're absolutely gobsmacked the first time you hear it, and everytime thereafter.
The 1980's when the Music made you feel really happy and alive.

I loved this brilliant song, when it came out, in the eighties, and I was only in my twenties. I'm now 60, and I still get goosebumps, whenever I hear this.
What a wild time. While I want to say "bring me back", I know what I crave is the innocence we all had back then.

No words to describe how cool this shit is. Ian Astbury had a mile of swagger. This used to be one of my driving and jamming tunes in the 80s, and it still packs a punch to this day.

What I’ve always loved about The Cult was they bridged rock, punk, goth rock, and elements new wave, being arguably one of the earliest alternative rock band. Really brilliant and a true classic in the truest sense of the word
You nailed it
Really well said !!!
This is one of the great "postmodern" moments: all these signs of pop music history getting mixed and matched, stirred in the blender. Jim Morrison fronting Boney M with a touch of Ozzy not fearing the reaper, and a sneaky side of the Cure.
Well said cause I'm an old school die hard and don't listen to much made after about 1979 but my son loved the cult and got me hooked.

Well I am certainly too old. It's so difficult to find any continuity. Perhaps that's what people want these days. But there are many, many songs that make this one not worth a second listen to.
@@ginacoles6207 Dang Gina! I’m too old too! Why such the negativity? Songs are songs. It’s just music.
64 and still lovin' it. Ian has the moves.

37 years ago I was 28 years old and hooning about on a Wes Cooley replica Yoshimura Suzuki GS 1000. no cameras, open race pipe and all the yuppies I could piss off as I made lots of noise riding up to Chelsea Bridge on a friday evening!
Still sounds fresh 38 years later, amazing album and band

how i miss those days.. we were alive and nothing but great music filled our lives!!!
I'm 74 and loved the feel good music of the 80s.
Being a teenager then was amazing. And hearing The Cult in a dark, loud af club while you dance on your own, eyes closed and one with the music...clubs were church for me. I'd go and dance like it was my last night on earth, with pure joy and ecstasy without drugs or booze. The music was enough. Now I do it at home, lol.
This music will last for eternity! Who agrees? 😁
Agree!!
Damn right, this will be an anthem for ever, so says me and I'm a relic.born in 1958

There’s no denying, this guy has a tremendous ,powerful voice and this song is a true classic.
Astbury is one of the most underrated frontmen as well. Truly the physical embodiment of the music on the stage.
