    Wow, whenever I go back to the 'childhood days' of my F1 fandom, I'm always reminded of a kind of 'provincial', amateurish element of the sport. In this case, it's Murray commentating via phone line.
    It's weird, because it's not as if we looked at F1 in the 1980's and thought of it as unglamorous, it's always had the air of glamour around it. But yeah, certain bits and pieces are very much about a sport still in nascence. For example, it's been quite a while since tyre warmers were introduced, but I have a distinct memory of a photo in one of my F1 magazines, can't remember which year exactly but mid-80's, of a car with a mass of hot towels on the tyres.

    • @TheGuitarinBangla
      @TheGuitarinBangla 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      that's so well put. you're right. no matter how unrefined things were, F1 did always have that sense of glamour about it

    I'm not absolutely sure about what really happened here: either it was Mansell that f***ed it all up on his own, somehow, or the Mclaren mechanics didn't give him enough free space to approach his pit. Either way, pit stops in Estoril surely weren't on Nigel's list of favourite things, because two years later, also when leading the race, a wheel fell off right after his stop, which virtually ended his title hopes that year.

    At the 8 second mark, Murray states 'Senna is not out', which confused me for years, having only watched the BBC Highlights aged 8 (can't remember if they showed it live in the UK). This comment made sense watching the live version years later, as a few laps previously Piquet and Caffi collided and I believe Murray thought the Dallara was a Mclaren in the low afternoon sun, before realising his mistake a few laps later🙂

    Sad day for me. Mansell was in total control until this pit stop. He missed the pit stop position because the space that he had was to narrow and he avoid hitting the mechanics. Then he reverse to his position (and for that was black flagged). Mansell did not saw the black flag, so he continue and had an accident with Senna. Senna did not knew Mansell had a black flag either.

    @PippinRally Yep, they can. Although the reverse gear is incredibly small, and a driver must be careful to keep the revs low or else he'll cause some serious damage. Supposedly drivers are discouraged from using the reverse gear and you'll see most of them do a burnout to spin around as it's quicker, anyway. This year at Monaco you saw a few cars reversing out of run-off areas during the practice sessions.

    schumi used reverse on the grid at indy in 2002... not sure on the year, but he missed his grid slot and had to reverse

  • @greavous93
    @greavous93 ปีที่แล้ว

    I cant recall what year they banned shifting into reverse in the pit lane. These days you cannot back up in the pit lane, the team can push you back if you havent passed the pit exit line but otherwise no going backward. Watching Mansell do it there is now wonder it was outlawed, that sure looked like an accident ready to happen.

    I think he locked his wheels up and just didn't want to run into the pit team.

    • @pressureworks

      Schumacher would've just run em over, team boss jean todd would've fined or fired them for being in the way, and under the wheels.

  • @KarlBainbridge

    Technically he did, but it was still a Toro Rosso rather then an actual Minardi, plus to me too many changes took place between Toro Rosso and Minardi for them to be truly considered the same team IMO.

    • @azynkron

      I assume for safety reasons. He should have gone out and come in on the next lap instead. You can't have guys reversing around in the pit since it would be total chaos.
