Loved Mansell. Very unlucky to not be a multi WDC himself. Easily a match for Senna. Cars and rules were totally different back then. One of the greats of F1 for me and a great era of F1.
I couldn't agree more! I never got to see Gilles racing while he was still alive, only on video... But I had the privilege of watching Mansell, and I really miss seeing him race... What a performer!
Gilles was fantastic starter as well. Anyways... Gilles didn't swerve, and/or deliberately hold other drivers up. As quoted in an article - that Nigel Roebuck once used as a title in Motorsports magazine (2012??) - _"Any Idiot Can Block"_ (Gilles Villeneuve; after Jarama 1981 when asked by a reporter as to why he didn't use "defensive" measures during the GP).
Nigel Mansell was the absolute best. What he lacked in natural talent (Senna) he made up for in pure passion, guts and a blood red desire to win. The absolute Bulldog of F1 for over many a decade. No one came close when 'Red Five' was 'on one'. I miss those Sundays and it's great to see it all kept alive here on the 'Tube' As Mr. Walker would say...'Fan-tastic!'
Great vid. I grew up watching mansell and red five. He had balls. His overtake on berger at mexico around the outside of the peraltada is bruned on my brain!!
1:18 The best overtake ever over Senna. It's funny how he looked to his left and saw Mansell there, I wonder what went through his mind; (no man you again! give me a break Mansell) I'm Brazilian and really admire the boldness of both racers. R.I.P. Senna.
I remember reading an article with Derek Warwick just after Nigel Mansell became World champion in 1992 and he stated that if Prost or Senna had been in the same car as him that year he believed Mansell still would have been champ. I think Nige would have given Senna a run for his money if they shared the same car. Also Nigel was a bit older than Senna he was almost 40 when he became champion. And I don't think Nigel gets enough credit for his efforts in the 1991 season he was so far behind Senna at the beginning of the season and he still managed to make it a competitive season, The Williams may have been the faster car but the McLaren was the most reliable car.
9:09 That is why they have to removed the "Peraltada" corner from the new layout at the "Hermanos Rodriguez" racetrack, it was pretty unsafe, even today, there is still a couple of grooves all across the outside of that banked corner from Nigel Mansell dragging his brass balls from when he passed Berger...
He did, although I wonder had he won in 91 would he have left and won indycar in his first seasonin 93, which I'm my opinion is an even greater achievement
Should have won in 86 and would have won in 87. He was still carrying a neck injury from Formula Ford days and that Suzuka smash was so much worse as a result. Rotten luck
Le pilote culte. Dans un grand jour Mansell était intouchable. Très rapide dans toutes les conditions. Des boulettes mémorables qui ajoute à sa légende. La perte du titre 1986 à été une vraie plaie pour moi.
Mansell on the charge. No sight like it in racing, you can see the car having its neck rung, and the way he would get so close before pouncing like some wild animal 🦁 never gets boring.
Monaco '92 - Nigel was leading by half-a-minute before the pitstop with half-a-dozen laps to go. Those final few laps were the stuff of legend. As Mansell said in the post-race interview 'His (Ayrton's) car was just too wide...'
@ChannelMansell Certainly did. In fact, I used to prefer it if Mansell had dropped places for whatever reason rather than be out in front, because you just knew that something unbelievable was gonna happen. I lost interest after Damon Hill won the title as i could see the way F1 was heading......Hopefully it will regain it's appeal some day.
People go on about Senna, Prost etc.. but Mansell was one of the, if not the , most exciting F1 drivers ever. I remember him coming from nowhere and racing through the field on many a race. Maybe it's because he come from the Midlands. Not as exotic as Brazil perhaps. I don't care , he was equally as exciting as Prost and Senna.
@SuperPrivate2011 Mansell without a doubt, Hamilton is good but Mansell raced in an era where the driver made more of a difference rather than the better car. Plus he is still the only person to have been F1 and Indie car champion at the same time.
In the less than a inch overtake over senna was just possible cause they are two awesome pilots. I miss this F1, where we had a lot of great racers and not only some guys depending on the team.
Nige has always been up there with Schumi with being able to take a lesser car and wring its neck to best of their own driving ability long before they had the Constructors Champ's chassis at their disposal. Piss off Senna & Prost ...
@james95morrisonUK But the difference in my opinion is that Kimi might give 100% in one race an then the next he might give 70 - 80 %. But mansell gave 110% everytime he got into a racing car.
Nigel Mansell was an absolute ass off track yet probably deserved more than one world championship. It was no surprise really that Piquet could play head games with him..
I strongly agree. Though I'm brazilian and reput Senna as the greatest of all, Nigell is my favorite for his agressiveness, determination, highspiritedness and for never giving up, not to mention his superb skills. No doubt one of the greatest of all times. Unfortunately, I alsso agre thet this shitty music spoils the video. I know some think it is great. Anyway , I think there are lots of music sites for thhe fans of that kind of muzak and it has nothing to do with the stuff we look for here.
Great vid!!! does any what that white cloud like thing that forms on the two edges of the rear wing under braking? 1:10.. i saw it recently on the two mclarens of Jenson and Lewis... curious to know why that happens
Condensation between high and low pressures from the wings. When one saw this, one KNEW the aerodynamic set-up was right. Only seen in humid or damp conditions though.
Hamilton is definetly an old school racer! all the moves drivers pulled to try and defend against mansell are now illegal and he would have trouble today due to the blue flag. Mansell a true master of racing and Hamilton has the misfortune of too many rules and regs! A good video, just a shame about the music over the sound of the cars and murray walker!
I'm brazilian, but used to love watching Mansell drive, though he was both rival of Piquet and Senna. Only one title misrepresents badly his greatness, that's why I don't get impressed with both Michael's and Hamilton's records. Those days everybody faced real competition, win one GP was a feat to consider. This is not like nowadays, when a newbie like Vettel comes from nowhere and gets four straight world titles just because he had the better car. Red Five is the real deal, believe me young people.
this guy never gets the credit i feel he deserves he was cheated out of a title in 1990 allan prost poltitical sportsman nigel was never to good at politics that car was built out of a year of testing and hard work and it was taken from him in 90 the farrari i mean case in point look at his stats when he got everthing his way in 1992 9 wins and three second places out of 16 races this guy was great one of the best !!!
The tyre explosion was the worst. It even snapped the suspension so he couldn't even limp back to the pits to get a new one and have another go as we all knew he would. Instead he managed to keep it straight despite it initially snapping like a turtle and got it off track safely. That's balls and skill in one. 1986 should have been Mansell. Who knows if he'd won that he might have got more.
@@TheWPhilosopher yeah 100% well without the tyre blowout he’d of been world champ, in 87 as we’ll be was leading comfortably until he injured his back. I think he would of win that one as well. In 91 as well if he didn’t have the 4 DNF’s at the start of the season he would be been champ again.
Under the title of "proctecting the inside is futile"......... how can they leave out the pass of Berger at Mexico in 1990 ?? By far the best Nige move on the outside.
Love the video! Love the commentary! But why is it polluted with a crappy music soundtrack? The only music should be the sound of the engines, nothing more, nothing less.
@rowlocks99 What, when he was too fat to fit in the Macca? Haha I thought it was a good way to exit, better that than how Schumi's going about it right now...
@MrTorpedoFist Umm....sorry my friend but Keke Rosberg won the 1982 Championship, Nigel Mansell was a committed driver who was always exciting to watch, and Enzo Ferrari loved those type of men driving his cars, not nancy boys...
Loved Mansell. Very unlucky to not be a multi WDC himself. Easily a match for Senna. Cars and rules were totally different back then. One of the greats of F1 for me and a great era of F1.
@TimBrewin I'm 39 years old and I credit Mansell with my current F1 obsession! The man was incredible to watch. A real gladiator on the track!
Legendary, one of the best drivers of all time !
After the LEGENDARY GILLES the next best thing to watch, pure pleasure , the lionheart!
I couldn't agree more! I never got to see Gilles racing while he was still alive, only on video... But I had the privilege of watching Mansell, and I really miss seeing him race... What a performer!

What a perfect comparison
My heart sinks when I hear James Hunt commentating, what a great chap he was.
Nigel Mansell was the absolute best. What he lacked in natural talent (Senna) he made up for in pure passion, guts and a blood red desire to win. The absolute Bulldog of F1 for over many a decade. As a Senna fan I must admit those 'faking' moves were awesome.
This was the era of F1 at its peak, proper racing🤗

When his car worked, he was unstoppable!
Yes men.
There was never ever any doubt of his commitment and effort to go along with his talent
he deserved more than just one title :(
I'd said four. without the doubt.
He did, although I wonder had he won in 91 would he have left and won indycar in his first seasonin 93, which I'm my opinion is an even greater achievement

He was a true british bulldog, a total fighter to the end, one of the very best, right up there with Senna.
06:04 Wheels spinning up hill whilst doing a back marker and taking the lead! Fresh moves
My favourite race was Monaco where Mansell was chasing Senna. Senna won but Mansell just hounded him for the entire race. It was incredibly exciting!
Monaco '92 - Nigel was leading by half-a-minute before the pitstop with half-a-dozen laps to go. Those final few laps were the stuff of legend. As Mansell said in the post-race interview 'His (Ayrton's) car was just too wide...'
That was brilliant. Nice to see the great man in action again. Thanks.
He was my hero.

mansell, hill and senna. my first memories of f1

THE MAN, THE F1 DRIVER; THE HERO.
NIGEL ERNEST JAMES MANSELL THE LION OF F1 when F1 was R-E-A-L !!
Red 5 Still Alive! Oh yeah!
Great stuff. What a legend Our Nige will always be!
He was the best with the worst luck, but when 'RED 5' was alive there was no stopping the man, no one on earth could match Mansell on a charge!!
In the less than a inch overtake over senna was just possible cause they are two awesome pilots. I miss this F1, where we had a lot of great racers and not only some guys depending on the team.
Also, which says much about both - absolute trust. They both knew that neither would pull a 'dirty trick' on the other.
Good Video. Nigel Mansell the most underated driver ever, but my hero. The only person that passed Ayrton Senna regularly.
So awesome, i fucking LOVE this!
Nige was one of my favs
Nige has always been up there with Schumi with being able to take a lesser car and wring its neck to best of their own driving ability long before they had the Constructors Champ's chassis at their disposal. Piss off Senna & Prost ...
best thing is, after he overtakes his car shits fire on the drivers who got owned!
The best racer ever, he would have been out of sight if he'd had reliable cars....
Awesome video!. F1 was so much better back then, they're just not that aggresive anymore. Daredevil of the 80's everyones F1 hero!.
Enter max verstappen
Mansell - A driver, the likes of which the world has never seen the likes of which

How I wish he was still racing! He so deserved a better finale

Hamilton couldn’t hold Mansell jockstrap. When drivers were men.

With late Gilles Villeneuve , the most spectacular driver in Formula 1.
Quite simply.. the best F1 driver that has ever lived (Senna lovies feel free to chirp but facts are facts)...
But mansell gave 110% everytime, because thats the way the man was.
