    Greatest song of the 70's.

  • @Musicvegan01

    Disco is just a sub-genre of Rhythm & Blues and so are soul, funk, New Jack Swing, house, Latin Freestyle, Latin soul, electrofunk, zydeco, neo soul, adult R&B, southern soul, soul jazz, smooth jazz, acid jazz, Chicago soul, etc. R&B itself developed from Black gospel/spirituals and many of the early R&B/soul singers either started in gospel or sang in church. Some early R&B (& rock n roll too) songs were originally gospel songs with the words changed to secular topics. Thomas A Dorsey, who is considered to be the "father of gospel", also wrote blues songs.
    Most of these genre titles were made up by the record labels, radio DJs, or the music press for marketing reasons. They were not usually made up by the artists themselves. Miles Davis & Nina Simone did not like the word "jazz", and Hall & Oates have said in interviews they hated the title "blue eyed soul". At one time, any music by Black artists was officially called "race music" and "country & western" was originally called "hillbilly" by the labels.

      @@Dinnerthedaythebanksareopen Hi Valerie, yes I grew up in the 70s. I'm Gen-X, coming on 57 years old in June, Lord willing. I can't speak for everyone else, but me and my household loved Candi Staton! I was a little girl at the time, but I would hear her music constantly on the radio. Like I said in another comment, my big sis loved her music, and we'd all sing along to "Young Hearts Run Free"! ☺
      I agree, I think more people should acknowledge her and her contributions to music. She doesn't get near the attention here on youtube that she deserves! I followed her career off and on, she was Candi Staton-Sussewell I believe at the time she gave her heart to the Lord. I remember hearing her tell her story and struggles with alcoholism and her Husband's drug addiction on Christian tv, back in the 90s, and it was both riveting and compelling!

    • @Dinnerthedaythebanksareopen
      @Dinnerthedaythebanksareopen ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@earth2kosmickitty That makes perfect sense. I’m 23 but grew up listening to lots of 70s & 60s music. I was curious because Candi, Linda Clifford, The Stylistics & Love Unlimited never get mentioned even though they obviously shaped the sound of the 70s

    • @earth2kosmickitty
      @earth2kosmickitty ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Dinnerthedaythebanksareopen Oh wow, u have amazing musical taste and sound like an "Old soul" like me. 🥰My first exposure to music was of course through my parents. They were known as the "Silent Generation". I basically cut my teeth on Blues, R&B, Jazz, etc. They played everything from Nat King Cole to Al Green. I love the Stylistics, and yes, I agree 100 that these artists and others helped shape the sound of the 70s! And yes, Linda Clifford should get more mention, as well as Love Unlimited, loved them!!! I might also give an honorable mention to Randy Crawford. She was/is also an amazing musical treasure that should be explored by more reactors!

Take care of yourself, first! what profound lyrics, about woman's dignity and breaking free from life struggles: She says "my mind must be free to learn all I can about me", "self preservation is what's really going on today"; "I'm going to love me for the rest of my days"...wow true today and always.

    So much of the pre-Disco 1970s R&B was considered 'dance music' and was played in dance clubs, both gay and straight, across the country. This song from Candi Staton, was often played in the gay dance clubs of the 1970s. The first time I heard it was in a dance club in Seattle called Shelly's Leg. I suggest you review Hazell Dean is an English dance-pop singer, who achieved her biggest success in the 1980s as a leading hi-NRG artist. She is best known for the top-ten hits in the United Kingdom "Searchin'", "Whatever I Do" and "Who's Leaving Who". and Pamala Stanley is an American disco and Hi-NRG singer from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. She scored several dance/club hits from the late 1970s to the late 1980s.

    HUGE disco hit and packed the dance floor. When she re did the song years later changed the words from "Love really DON'T love you" to Love really "DOES" love you"

    As much as I LOVE ELO, this song right here is my all-time 70s favourite favourite FAVOURITE record...... Never clicked that button so fast as I did when I saw you were reacting to this STELLAR song. Could you picture it, teenage girls dancing down at the Disco. I have sooo many great memories of back then. ❤💃🎙🎶

    It's actually pronounced "Stay-ton". This was a big disco hit for miss Staton in the clubs and on the charts back at height of disco.

    Oh my God !!!! I love this song. Reminds of my high school day, hitting the parties and clubs and dancing to this tune. 🎶🎶

    Urban legend has it Elvis send her a note thanking her for her cover of 'In The Ghetto'.
    She was mostly known in the 70's and 80's but had another hit in 1999 together with The Source - You Got The Love.
    Please react to some more of her songs!
    My favorite is 'He Called Me Baby'❤🙏

    This may be from the 70's, but she has never stopped putting out music. Still out there doing her thing.

    This is a great song. I had forgotten about this one and this singer. Thanks for bringing back the memories.

    Wow, takes me back to cozy warm times of the slower paced 70s. Life was so much simpler, and freeer. Free of devices, free of phones, freer with time to be creative with your imagination.
    Our time had its own troubles, but Just easier and smoother times to live in.
