    Question: can you use JB Weld to do the same process, or is JB Weld too weak? The other question is can it be TIG welded to serve the same purpose? I can see how much more rigid the jugs will be with the Devcon added in. Good vid man. Aloha Every Minute. Chief

      I agree. Sleeved many snowmobile engines in my day. Had the cylinder bored over and dropped in a sleeve. I never had an issue with one. On an older Triple cylinder engine, it was a real cost saver. I restored some nice snowmobiles and even motorcycles back in the 90's.

    it sounds good but if honda would redesign the block this wouldnt be necessary, have seen engines with this mod with the side of cylinder blown out , good idea bou a temporary fix at best, if ya dont run more than 10 psi of it will hold up pretty well, any more than that and you will have problems. also the epoxy doesnt expand and contract at the same rate as the block, so eventually it will become loose and fail

    How tall was the devcon? When once applied onto the block what was height on it, about 2 or 3ins ? There's only so much room it can take since the sugar is there to hold the devcon up from falling and seaping through

  • @darianistead2239
    @darianistead2239 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just curious as to why the water jackets weren't flush filled or a touch overfilled seeing the block is getting decked and bored anyway, more material may make it stronger by supporting cylinder walls also it'll have a clamped mating force against it by way of head/gasket.. Then drill water channels after machining is done.
    Also any idea of the expansion rate of the product as opposed to what the surrounding metals are at temp?
    Seems like a good budget solution to open deck blocks if it works out.

Another use is to fill casting areas of the types of mills and other machine tools that you might find in a home machinist's workshop

  • @AutoBodyEverything

    Taping off the deck and cylinder surfaces to fill the grooves to the brim and skimming it with a bondo spreader will give you a good compressed fill with a smooth flush surface. Just to avoid coolant seeping where you don’t want it. Don’t pull the tape off until the product is dry enough so you don’t tamper with the perfect surface. Resurfacing the deck will remove any tape that’ll be stuck to the edges. Even a block with smooth sandpaper will clean the edges but you’ll have to know the gasket your going to be using in order to know what the required
    (surface scratch) on the deck is recommended or else the gasket won’t BITE correctly. The more solid of a gasket material, the smoother the surface.

    Devcon on anything other than setting turquoise into a piece of jewelry is just stupid, plastic compounds is not metal in any way and is doomed to fail fail fail fail costing way more than doing it right in the first place. Final round, 2 hrs till lane call, well, maybe. Better to show up, the other lane may fail or red light and then you can drive to the return road. That is the only time to use Devcon.

    Sleeving is taping new cylinder Inserts or increasing the bore .

      If the diameter of the bore exceeds the maximum for overboring for an actual sleeve, the machine shop wouldnt do it. Nothing like blowing out a cylinder wall with the boring machine. Plus the sleeve wouldn't seat. I did a lot of sleeving back in the 90's on snowmobiles. Some motorcycles, usually classics. I miss restoring vintage stuff.

    Also here because of boostedbois. I'm not a tuner but this is really interesting. So what you are doing is making a barrier around the top of the combustion chamber to help keep the cylinder sleeve from mushrooming open with the huge amount of combustion pressure? Am I correct?

      Correct. And thank you for the support!!

      Another thought is that open deck sleeves move around under big power damaging the head gasket and loosing seal. This is a budget closed deck conversion. I think its pretty cool.

      ThriftStore Hacker not so much mushroom (make bigger at the top like a well worn valve tip) as it is deflection (side to side movement of the cylinder). The combustion force in the cylinder is not applied evenly to all of the cylinder wall, as the cylinder doesn't just fire all of the fuel in one neat little hit. It burns across a flame front which means the pressure wave will also vary in the cylinder (super fast) causing a side to side rocking motion like the TheSplendidVids alluded to.
      Which in turn will try to rock the cylinders (very fast like an orbital sander) and deflect the bore causing a loss of sealing. By trying to hold the top of the cylinders more rigidly it reduces the chance of movement, which makes for a happier head gasket and better ring sealing.

      Dodgy Brothers interesting. If you aren't too worried about mushrooming the top of the bore out would it may be more stable to drive vertical pins between the bore and engine block. I feel like the epoxy would be ground into dust after a few hard runs of the engine. Some aluminum or steel rod could be had at the hardware store for $10.
      Your thoughts?

    • @DodgyBrothersEngineering
      @DodgyBrothersEngineering 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You do actually get a slight temporary mushrooming / balloon effect in the bore (especially under big boost or lots of nitrous) but it isn't at the very top of the bore like you might think. Remember the fuel doesn't start to "effectively" burn (so no pressure spike) until after the piston is traveling down the stroke (even though the plug fired BTDC). So the mushroom effect takes place more like a quarter of the way down the bore where the walls of the cylinder balloon out leaving the top of the cylinder and half way down the bore in place. Whenever you see a split bore it will generally be in that area.
      Like you say though I would be skeptical of any material you could hand drill and leaves a power residue (even if it work hardens with use). If he had drilled it and it came out like swarf like you get when drilling metal I would have more confidence in it. My personal choice (because I built one) would be to CNC machine a 16mm aluminium plate that snuggly fit in the top of the bores.

    Devcon+b18 block= semi-indestructable. But its always good to do it right the first time, but hey if u already committed into building a stock sleeve nitrous or turbo motor its not bad at all. Id take devcon over a block guard anyday lol and its cheaper too. Good work on the video man! Cant wait for the B20v Nitrous!

  • @RustBeltAuto
    @RustBeltAuto 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    That should work just fine. It just needs to keep the cylinders from walking around. I have worked with Devcon aluminum repair putty with some success on aluminum, however it requires you to bake it in an oven. Don't know how much of a difference it would make, but it is made for aluminum. You could also use a pastry bag if you are worried about your ziplock bag exploding all over the place, or maybe even emptying out a caulking tube, and filling it up.
