- With the Brickyard 400 returning this weekend, I thought we could look back on the first NASCAR race I ever went to... which just so happens to also be the worst race of NASCAR's modern era.

Not only was the CoT more top heavy and relied more on mechanical grip than aero, it was also just plain heavier. Like a few hundred pounds heavier. Even I, an 18 year old fresh out of high school, knew there was no way in hell those tires were gonna hold on those newer cars. I remember being in a NASCAR thread on Red vs Blue's website back then and we were all flabbergasted that NASCAR could drop the ball like that. Man, how little did we realize that the worst was yet to come.

Funnily enough, I think the CoT ultimately led to the tire issues we have now (with not enough tire wear). It wore them harder, so Goodyear had to make them stronger, then the Gen 6 car put even more pressure on the tires, pressing them into the track even more, so Goodyear made them even harder. The Gen 7 car doesn’t actually wear them out so much, so now Goodyear is struggling to find the perfect balance of a softer compound that’ll wear out more naturally and allow for better tire strategy without crossing the line of causing random blowouts again.

I was a 7-8 year old in 2008 watching every race on weekends and I actually went to a NASCAR Cup race in Texas in November....yup I went to Texas motor speedway's second race date in November of 2008 and this happened just 3 months after my little bro was born and yea I grew up with the COT... and 2008 was when Jimmie Johnson was putting a tear winning his THIRD Cup Series championship! I wasn't by no means a Jimmie Johnson fan in the late 2000s because I knew he was winning weekend and week out IT WAS BORING (Thanks Hendrick Motorsports!)

Except for NASCAR Kart Racing for the Wii... that was a game I still play on the Wii because it's fun... at that was the official last EA NASCAR game when EA finally puts all their NASCAR licensing chips to the table in 2009 a year later and they surely by God added... (Uhhhhh... Oh God... Ahhh! For the love of Pete..) JOEY "Sliced Bread" LOGANO! And Joey Logano was started his Cup career back in 2008 for JGR... before signing with Penske.... WE ARE KNEW WHAT HAPPENED! He was what Tony Stewart once said back in 2013 after the wreck at Fontanta "a rich kid who never worked a day in his life..." and to this day I still agree with Tony....

I can still remember being the dumb 8 year old that I was, not knowing about the whole controversy surrounding the race after starting at the halfway point in the race and just being happy Jimmie Johnson won and Jeff Gordon got a good solid top 5…
And then I try watching the race 5 years later and I think “OH DEAR GOD! THIS RACE WAS AN UTTER DISASTER!”
Yeah that was me at nine years old. I remember thinking “oh awesome cautions” bc that was half the excitement for me. Now I’m 25 and can’t stomach watching this race
The 2008 Brickyard 400 really was a catalyst that led to the rapid decline of interest in NASCAR at Indianapolis
And I know the 2017 Brickyard 400 was a total hot mess and one of the craziest races of recent history, but I still prefer that over 2008 because of how dreadfully abysmal it was
At least the 2017 race had more than 10 consecutive green flag laps
2017 was a normal clean race until Kyle and Truex crashed out
It doesn’t help that the current gen car is only good at the IMS with clean air. Outside of Kyle Larson’s insane passes this past weekend, little true racing was had. NASCAR has GOT to look into better aero packages for the brickyard because it needs a better competitive nature to stay relevant to fans.

Secondly. The Brickyard 400 has far less “underdog” drivers who won it compared to the Daytona 500. While I don’t have an issue with underdogs like Cope, Michael Waltrip, Bayne, McDowell, & Stenhouse being Daytona winners & I love how that’s part of the lore of Daytona you don’t see that as much with the Brickyard 400. Other than Menard (& mayyybe Jamie Mac, & Kasey Khane) everyone who won the brickyard 400 is a nascar champion, a hall of famer, or a future hall of famer outside those three who were all still damn good drivers.
Upon hearing that it basically killed two motor sports on its grounds, I’m beginning to get the feeling that IMS doesn’t like anything other than Indycars running over its asphalt. Can’t say I blame it.
F1 is so confusing given that winning the IndyCar season gets you enough credits for FIA certification. So, in theory, they should have offered more to F1 for the synergy.
Tony George single handedly killed open wheel racing in the US. If it weren't for the split Indycar would have grown in popularity side by side with Nascar through the late 90s.
I was at that race in person. I was three years old. It might have been the catalyst for the gradual downward spiral of the Brickyard 400, but it was still enough for me to fall in love with auto racing as a sport. And for that, I thank it.

You forgot one crown jewel race: The Winston 500 at Talladega, which was part of the original Winston Million. The Brickyard didn't officially become a crown jewel until '98, when it was added to the rebranded "No Bul 5".
The 2008 Brickyard was my first race too. I was in turn 4 on the front row and got caked in tire wear. Smelled like Goodyear tires for the next week or so. 😂😂😂
I was at bristol spring this year and I legit thought I was going to be at 2008 brickyard 2.0. Thankfully didn't turn out that way but man I have photos walking out after the race of the walkway just CAKED in good year tires. I was tempted to make a rubber ball out of how much was left.

The worst thing about this race is that it gave them the worst NASCAR idea ever: The Stage races.
This was the first race I ever watched from start to finish. 7-year-old me at the time was like "Wow, that was something"
10:33 Hating on segmented races? Boy, if he only knew what was coming...
Later tire testing found the exact problem was that the extra downforce resulted in extra tire load and slip, causing the tire being ground into such a fine powder that it wasn't 'sticking' to the track properly, which meant no rubber build up. The fact Goodyear did not take the safe route and bring in a harder compound when they lacked data is prior to the event is ridiculous, especially since they were the only tire company providing rubber to the teams.
Oh, and by the time the event was over, _every single tire_ Goodyear supplied the teams had been used.
This race had many Stage Cautions, even if it didn't exist back in the day.
There will never be a better crapshoot of a combo than Indianapolis and tire failures.

I would reccomend watching Brickyard 400's from 1998-2005. The atmosphere is insane. TV Networks and drivers talked about the event like it was the Daytona 500. It all came apart in just one race.
The Wave Race theme to the memories of seeing some of my favorite drivers of my childhood (especially Rudd in 97) win the Brickyard 400 was just perfect!
Just remember, at one point there was no racing, not because it was not invented, just because of Tyres
I remember watching this race with my family and not knowing what was going on with the tires.
The only thought i remember having was "I hope this isnt an issue next week at Pocono" since it would be the first race my entire family attended.
Fun nugget of information about the 93 test at indy, they sent the cars out in numerical order, there was no 00-1 cars and first was rusty, Dale wanted to be first but that wasn't gonna happen, so he decided he was gonna be the first to complete a lap, so when rusty was taking a warm up lap dale went all out anf was able to pass him

As someone who at at 2017 Brickyard 400, my family overslept, and after our 2 hour drive to the track, still made it in from the gates, to our seats on the other side of the track, from the time the national anthem started, to just after the fly over. The stands and track itself was dead. 35k is probably 10k to many
Jeff Gordan is not a native to Indiana... He moved from California originally. Tony Stewart was the first Indiana born.

cant decide if 2008 or 2017s brickyard race was worse, i get that 2017s race had its charm for being the race not wanting to end, but it just looked like nobody wanted to be there at the end

One race no one mentions as the worst race in history is the 2000 New Hampshire race. In response to Kenny Irwin and Adam Petty dying from stuck throttles in practice/testing, they mandated restrictor plates in the 2000 race. As a result, Jeff Burton lead every single lap and there were almost no passes under green for the entire 300 lap race
One of the big issues that faced Michelin at Indy was the clampdown by the governing body, the FIA, on testing. So no one was allowed to test on the new surface. Bridgestone, however, had a huge advantage because it's subsidiary is Firestone - and therefore had access to their tyre data from the Indycars. Obviously, the two cars are not the same, but enough inferences were made so that their tyres didn't fail.

1:27 Yep me and my dad were at that Daytona 500 in 2000, me being a #3 & a new #8 fan with Dale jr fresh off his second Busch Championship, we were expecting a pretty exciting race. Like you said about tell Jarrett being the head of a long train, a good old boy spectator said "It looked like a Choo Choo train" said afterwards, being one long line of cars for the whole race except for pit stops. I remember after about 20 laps I was watching the crowd look at each other saying, "what is going on there is no passing whatsoever!?" Even my dad noticed it, and worst of all it was no different for the 400 in 2000 as well, and we were at that race too.😒
Wild that me and Elly went to our first races in 2008. Mine was Texas the same weekend as ruitiman (dont kill me) rolled like 10 times in turn 2 at Texas in qualifying lol

You were there too?! I must be a couple years older than you. My first race was the '03 Brickyard where the young gun Kevin Harvick brought it home. I remember being so sad during that dredded '08 race, sitting up in Turn 1. Watching the drivers tip toe around for 10 laps at a time and dragging on forever. It really was a pretty terrible event. This weekend will be pivotal.
I remember my dad was into nascar until 2008. He watched the Brickyard that year and felt the sport was officially going to be over by 2010. Now I’m an adult, going to races yearly and I think nascar is going to be around forever. I’m just praying this race goes well.
It can't be overstated enough how damaging this race was to NASCAR's image. Having a catastrophic race at somewhere like Richmond is one thing but when you're on the main stage at a place like Indy, everyone is watching. And NASCAR disrespected it by not doing their research and turning an avoidable situation into a nightmare. The fallout was beyond what anyone could have imagined. A lot of it beyond repair.
I mean, Formula 1 just two years prior had it's disaster at the Yard of Bricks, and they weren't the American conglomerate that dominates racing today. That killed the race until COTA was built.
It’s not just a one off race, it’s coming back. The road course was supposed to be just for 3 years. I’m super excited for this year tho. I’ve went to the Indy 500 twice and this’ll be my first nascar race, the 30th anniversary of the brickyard 400
I have liked the pocono racing with the gen 7 (despite stage cautions making the strategy a lot less interesting) so I’m hopeful the same will be true for the other flat 2.5 miler

3:40 - interesting. It's entirely possible that reinforcement for nascar could have saved lives in indycar, which isn't something I've ever heard talked about on either side - since both sides (and their internet historians) tend to ignore other series.

Funfact. The next race after the first talladega race, Richard petty and Other PDA drivers got boo'd and at one point the race had to be stopped due to debris being thrown on to the track.

I was at this race, can safely say I have never been back to a Brickyard race. It really honestly made my family stop enjoying NASCAR. We went to the Brickyard every year 2003-2008. After that, we didn’t go much more… we did go to a couple more races, the first two Kentucky races lol.
*we only went the 2nd year because they practically gave out tickets to people who went the 1st year.
In 2005 Bridgestone knew the resurfaced track was extra abrasive as they own Firestone who had knowledge of the track with IndyCar, Michelin had NO such knowledge, also the FIA wouldn't allow Michelin to fly in different tyres.
The worst ever Daytona 500 race was in 2001 when Ralph Dale Earnhardt Sr died. 😢

True but you'd be hard pressed to find an Indiana race fan who didn't consider him one of our own. Pittsboro, IN still has multiple places named after him or signs listing it as his hometown. I definitely think that him winning the inaugural Brickyard 400 went a long way to cementing the image of him being a Hoosier hero.
In my opinion this race marked the beginning of NASCAR’s fall from its peak popularity during the 2000’s
I personally believe it was just a perfect storm of things. Jimmie Johnson's dominance, issues like the 2008 Brickyard 400, the racing getting worse (2008 was especially bad) and phantom cautions

I think part of the continued dropoff was also just how unberably boring the 2009 Brickyard 400 was. Only two things of note occurred at all in that race: Montoya's (I think fixed) pit road penalty and Johnson overtaking Martin late in the race. I have newspaper clippings from Indianapolis after that race, and while journalists are habitual liars and exaggerators they emphasize that at points they would have preferred the 2008 shitshow came back because nothing occured.
So if the option was either a shitshow that can't go twelve laps green, or a dullfest that can't have anything occur, then why bother showing up? Just save up money or the 500 in May, or go to the Xinity race at IRP the day before.
The brickyard has always been a "whatever" race. The only reason it was still so popular was novelty alone. 2008 whipped away all the novelty it had left.

Indy had a knack for god awful tire messes in the mid 2000’s with that F1 race. Kinda funny that one of the best tracks in the world yielded two of the biggest farces in recent memory

I remember watching the race that day. I had a bunch of friends over keep in mind I didn't invite them my wife did I wasn't going to watch the race. The Brickyard and road races were NASCAR's early gimmick races so I skipped them but my wife (girlfriend at the time) didn't know that. Y'all can be happy they are bringing it back just don't hold your breath it'll disappoint you sooner or later and I won't say I told you so when it happens because I'll telling you now.
New episode-the 2024 400 is the worst since Nascar waited for Larson to get the white flag when Preece obviously wasn’t gonna get going.

I went to the 2010 Brickyard 400. The race was okay, nothing special. I also went to the 2024 Indy 500. The race was a lot of fun but my biggest problem with the track is that unless you’re sitting in the actual corner of the racetrack, preferably in the middle of the corner, you have to be outrageously tall to see anything. And standing at 5’4” it was hard to see some of the pivotal action down the straights. Both races I sat on the straightaway just before an odd numbered turn. I just know if I want to see a race at Indy I have to save money well in advance, and buy the tickets as soon as they become available to get a good seat in the house
I was upset that they didn't run the oval in over 4 years since the pandemic. I hate the road course version of Indy, especially in 2021 when it was a werckfest of cars. So happy they coming back to oval
People always point to 2008 as the thing that killed the race but there is so many things people overlook when deciding that.
I went to the Brickyard 400 from 2006-2019. The biggest reason I heard people not wanting to go was a mixture of the heat and the cost. I rarely ever heard people say the 2008 race made them stop but I always hear them talk about it being too hot and not wanting to pay $100 for a series they lost interest in.

Indy is one of the few tracks tat should have two dates, we should have both the brickyard 400 and the road course, because just 3 years ago speedway races were horrible while road courses were doing very well, you don't need that many changes to completely change the direction of the sport, the fact is, road courses and short tracks were our best races during the gen6 era, now only intermediates have good racing, which is why we need a balanced schedule, yes it's good right now thar we have a lot of intermediate races but that's not going to last forever, it's going to be bad when intermediate racing will be much worse and the majority of races will be bad, with 36 races we should probably have 9 short track races, 9 intermediate races, 9 super speedway races and 9 road course/street circuit races, or just do what my best friend said and just make the cup series only ovals and build a new NASCAR series for road racing with the garage56 car and just have that series travel with IMSA and race at the same tracks since NASCAR owns IMSA now

I was at this race as well, but quite a bit older than you were apparently! I just remember how mad I was driving home with a blackened face from all the rubber to Ohio that evening at how long the race had taken and for no show.

I think one major blunder this person forget. One thing has come into play. Which wasn’t mentioned here.
The recession.
2009 and onwards.
People lost jobs, Houses, and lives. Prices got expensive fast, and nobody had money to time to go to races. Most people come from other states. Traveling wasn’t cheap at the time.
Another thing is, NASCAR’s changing attitude alienated their fans. Not taking what made the sport popular into consideration.
A single race didn’t kill NASCAR. If that’s the case, should’ve died along time ago. It was various factors that weren’t considered.
