1992 was the best champion battle ever top 6 were mathematically eligible for the championship Richard petty's last season and the first start for jeff Gordon in the season finale at classic Atlanta
The thing about 1992 is unlike championships these days with the playoff, it was not manufactured by NASCAR. It just came naturally, and that's why it will always be the greatest season. I'm just glad that I'm old enough to have experienced it, even if I was young.
Alan kulwicki is a local legend here, he sponsored and basically created the UNCC motorsports engineering program, all of the labs and equipment came about because of him
@@dindrmindr626 He crashed with Ernie Irvan in the season finale. Ernie Irvan lost control of his car and spun in front of Davey Allison and Davey hit him and destroyed the front end. It took him out of the championship. Davey was pretty gracious in defeat stating "it just wasn't meant to be". But if you really want to go back to Pocono where Davey drove across Darrell Waltrip's nose and flipped in the grass and got injured again, then have to get Bobby Hillin to sub at Talladega(he gets third) and like Larry McReynolds said in the scene podcast, working with a driver that probably shouldn't have been racing with those injuries.
As someone who did not grow up in this era, this really gave a true appreciation and understanding of why so many people still to this day love Alan Kulwicki.
I will never get tired of any 1992 recap. I was a 12 year old kid, cheering for Alan and anyone else who had come up from Wisconsin short tracks or ASA. Jeff Gordon had run at Sun Prairie a few years before, along with Thursday Night Thunder, we knew who he was. We had taped the race because of a family event. Came home and watched it, greatest race ever, the classic lost the battle, but won the war.
Hard to describe what it was like watching the '92-'94 story arcs as a fan. From the triumph of Alan to disbelief at his loss (When my dad told me, I legit thought it was an April Fools Joke and did not believe it until Jerry Punch's eulogy in the Bristol Busch race) to "what is happening?" and despair for the Allison family that July. Roll in Rusty/Dale, the Loss of Neil, Tire Wars Part II and Ernie's injury you just had to tune in to follow what was happening.
Brian France and all of NASCAR achieved a high like never before in 1992, and they’ve been chasing it ever since. That’s how we ended up with the Chase then the Playoffs. It’s unfortunate too because 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, and 2002 were terrific championship battles. Just wasn’t frequent enough in the five years preceding 2004 I guess
It's always crazy to think about what NASCAR would have been like in the mid-late 90s if Alan and Davey had lived. We could've had championship battles between Earnhardt, Gordon, Martin, Rusty Wallace, the Labonte brothers, Irvan, Allison, and Kulwicki for years to come, not to mention that Tim Richmond probably would've still been competitive if he'd been alive, and you never know what Dale Jarrett and Sterling Marlin could've ended up doing with different teams than the ones they ended up with. It was a magical time to be a racing fan, but it could've been so much more.
Great video, fellas. In response to what it was like to be an active fan of the sport in 1993... it fuckin' sucked ass! Especially as a Wisconsin fan with regards to Alan. But everyone loved Davey. In the same respect, it was also still part of a time period where we were somewhat used to losing drivers. Granted their losses were not behind the wheels of their race cars. The impact was heavy, but I feel like it would be heavier if the same story happened, today. Which is a great thing. It's a very welcome thing knowing that drivers barely even get hurt anymore, let alone killed.
it really is one of the greatest tragedies of this sport that such bright flames get snuffed out so suddenly. be it through the sanctioning body or a freak accident, we lose some of what have been and what could've been great drivers. it takes a brave soul to do this, and it's something i have to keep in mind whenever I tune into the story of NASCAR
I was in second grade in 92…. Still remember our hometown underbird winning the cup!!!! Greatest race of all time. Davey and Alan were and still are two of my favorite guys. I was at Alan’s championship celebration at Greenfield high school and unfortunately a few months later at his wake. Side note… still and will always love NASCAR as much as the Green Bay Packers!!!!
One of, if not the best NASCAR season. The kind of stuff movies are made of. So many incredible, heartbreaking, and resilient moments. This was peak NASCAR.

Elly dude, your style of documentaries is like no other and I love it. Raw, unfiltered and gritty. I know NASCAR is your main content but could you do your version of a Senna documentary. If you haven't heard his story I think you'd really enjoy it and his views on making the sport of autoracing (through f1) safer and better. Dale paid tribute at his 94' dega race.
Most competitive NASCAR season was 2002. 2001, 2022, and this year are also contenders. I acknowledge that 1992 may have had the best storylines and been the most "cinematic" season, but I wouldn't call it the most competitive especially because so many of the non-Ford teams were weak. A lot of the individual races in '92 were rather dull (especially the plate races) but the storylines were better than the racing, which is fine. But I think several other '90s seasons (especially the odd-numbered ones) had better racing.
Agreed. '92 actually had the lowest average number of lead changes since '71. It was a fantastic points battle, but purely from a race-to-race perspective, I'd take almost any year from '84-'97 over it. And yes, '01 and '02 are definitely the high marks in terms of competitiveness.
There were six cars still alive for the cup in the last race of the season. And that was in a time where they didn’t just restart the points over and over like today. Today they race cars that can’t pass each other. Statistically this year looks competitive, but it’s left to chance more than it’s competitive.
