"If you didn't cope."
With how often Richard Petty was shown every time the word petty came up, I was fully expecting a picture of Derrike Cope to appear
If NASCAR would allow rival sponsors (especially oil/gas companies) to sponsor teams again, a lot of teams would suddenly have full sponsorship. They're not doing themselves any favors while teams are struggling to put full seasons together.
it’s so funny to me that a sponsor like at&t couldn’t on a car bc of the title sponsor… yet we got a car that promoted extenze 💀😭
the only nascar game I have is nascar the game 2011 wii edition and block Budweiser on Kasey khane but allow extenze
Stuff like this makes me not want to ever return to watching nascar again after the disgust if shit like stage cautions and the chase already wore off.
It's funny to watch and read about, but I can't take any sport that would allow companies to commit attacks against any teams finances or the finances of the sport itself to stay.
nascar died when dale died - you@@asymsolutions
The weird thing is AT&T kinda didn't buy Cingular but that's a long and stupid story
"the deal was rock solid"
I see what you did there.
“Pumped 15 million dollars into the system” lmao
"It was the biggest of it's time!"
5:10
You missed two. “One of the biggest at the time.” “But they couldn’t last any longer.”
Not laughing at these jokes is kinda hard
I used to think Rusty and Dale were a type of root beer when I was a kid playing NASCAR Thunder 2003 lol.
Though it's hilarious that they kept the Winston and Busch names intact when spoken by the MRN crew in Thunder 03 and 04 (Plus Bill Weber with the Busch Series in 2005 and 06)
The viagra bit had me cracking up
That part killed me
ngl im gonna miss the old elly character
yeah I won't lie the new eyes are honestly a little unsettling
They're alright though.
I agree, the old one was way better
Same
@@muratendmo it's partially the color scheme imo. If they were just black pupils they'd be better.
Yeah the new one looks so awful
I do like the "21 means 21" thing they did with the pole winners under 21. Kind of smart, and still promites the beer, but also in a responsible way.
Yep. The Stock Car equivalent of Mission Winnow in Formula 1 (a trick by 2 long time friends... Ferrari and Marlboro. Same goes for the "A Better Tomorrow" bit from McLaren and British American Tobacco)
A friend was sponsored by Tampax. I asked him for tickets and he said "Let me pull a few strings"...
Larry the Cable guy
@@SimCentralYT Heard it somewhere waaay back...
Lmao
KOTEX
Hear about the new mexican race car driver he is sponsored by spick and span
10:42 the way I heard it explained at the time by nascar reporters was a bit different:
RWR never actually "changed their mind" about the partnership or anything like that. What happened is, the 54 car was unsponsored for Bristol, so rick ware found this as a prime opportunity to ask slayer for permission to put their logos on the 54 car. Hence why they refer to it as a partnership and not a sponsorship - there wasn't actually any money involved. Rick Ware was just a Slayer fan and wanted to run a slayer car instead of a blank unsponsored car.
However, Pods (who wasn't even sponsoring RWR that race) didn't want Slayer being represented by the same team that they sometimes sponsor, because pods did not agree with the content of slayers songs. So even though RWR still wanted to run the slayer car, pods gave them no choice but to remove the slayer logos. So they instead just put pods logos in there place
Wait rick likes slayer? For real?
@@plisskenationbackfromthede3657he doesn’t strike me as the type but I wouldn’t be shocked by it either.
"The deal itself was rock solid. In fact, it was one of the biggest of the time as it pumped-"
11/10 writing
You forgot when monster would stop producing diecasts and would stop appearing in video games for licensing purposes
If I remember correctly, when Dale Jr lent his voice in the first Cars film as a race car that was modeled exactly like the iconic red No. 8 Budweiser he drove at the time in 2006, instead of the Budweiser sponsorship, the DEI logo was placed onto the anthropomorphic race car in the movie.
Yes
That was more because you can’t have alcohol in a G rated movie
You could do a video on liveries that the V8 Supercars (now called simply Supercars) had to use when they went to the Middle East between 2006 and 2012 (Bahrain and Abu Dhabi). They couldn't advertise any alcohol brands due to local advertising laws.
This led to some creative liveries:
-Jack Daniel's cars were changed to read "Jack Lives Here"
-The Jim Beam Racing cars were re-liveried to "The Team"
- The Bundaberg Rum car had to be changed to say "HUZZAH" in place of Bundaberg
- The Bottle-O Racing team, whose sponsor used wine bottles and corkscrews to represent the letter T in their logo replaced them with actual letter Ts.
In terms of bungled deals, there was also the whole Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport / Travers Beynon situation in Townsville 2016
Monster Energy actually did put a limit on energy drink sponsorship.
They grandfathered 5-Hour for a couple of years before making them leave, and the only reason Menard was able to run a Rockstar car was that Monster is Rockstar's parent company.
Not really, rockstar is pepsico, monster is coca cola
I love a good out of context sponsor retrospective. Like the time the wealthy Bin Laden family sponsored Frank William’s’ first ever title with Alan Jones kicking off a decade of dominance haha
Fun Fact: When Kyle Busch was 16 in the trucks he couldn’t race at California or some other track because it was called “The Marlboro 400” or “500”
Similar thing happened to Colin Braun one year in Grand Am as one of the Watkins Glen races they were at had Tobacco Sponsorship so he was not allowed to take part.
Elly really doled out every pp joke he could for Viagra didn't he?
Also, can't believe no one mentioned the embargo NASCAR had on liquor sponsors all the way until 2005. Smokes, dip, and beer are all good but we draw the line at whisky? Really?
the amount of double entendre's during the Viagra portion was fantastic
in Jimmie's defense, Powerade is complete dogshit
We got Powerade on our minimarkets' shelves back then. Tasted like absolute nothing.
Even cheaper local brand isotonic drinks tasted way better than those. Rest in piss.
correct opinion
Real
The Powerade disrespect is UNREAL
it just tastes like expired Gatorade
Only way we can get back to the glory days is to have Zyn be the title sponsor and rename the series to the Zynston cup series
We got Kyle Busch with Zone, though....😂
10:13 The Kansas recreation was hilarious! Laughed my ass off at the guys at the front being really fast and competitive, while poor Long is stuck puttering around in last place like an old man! XD
Kid Rock: Bad is unexplainably perfect
yeah, they weren't wrong
14:38 *Leo pointing meme*
In all seriousness, great video!
I'm surprised you didn't dive into the games a bit more! NR2002/2003 is definitely something that I remember for replacing "Bud" with "Dale"
I remember being coached by Mark Martin in NASCAR Thunder 2004 with the huge Pfizer logo slapped onto it lol. That and during the lineup they'd say "In 2nd row we have: The Interstate Batteries Chevrolet!" and immediately after "and the Dale Jr. Chevrolet."
I did not know about little Debbie being owned by a cult
Man, love the can crack and "Harvick" at 3:46. The attention to detail in your videos make them so good
Not really on the basis of censorship per se but the 3 races in Japan, Dale Sr did not race a Goodwrench car. He raced 2 ACDelco cars and 1 Coca-Cola car. The reason given was that Goodwrench was only available in the US, while the other swere available in Japan.
Great video per usual brother. I remember playing Fifa 03 on GC, and seeing one of the teams jerseys having BUD clearly on them, and then wondering why they couldnt add that to Jr.s cars in Thunder!
Probably my favorite example of censorship in NASCAR was when the Chip Ganassi Racing cars were totally excluded from NR2003 because of licensing issues (I want to say it was because of Coors Light because it makes the most sense, but I don't remember the exact brand that caused issues)
anyway, great video as always, I enjoyed this style even if it was a bit different to you
I demand a Carl Edwards plug-in play 100% at 50k subs. Let’s do it
One of the most interesting drivers missing from games is jeremy Mayfield in thunder 2005. Which is huge given he made the first ever chase.
Reason? He was planned to be the cover athlete but EA swapped to Kevin Harvick close to the last minute. Mayfield or his agents (I'm not sure) were MAD. As he was essentially already chosen at this point. So in protest his likeness was removed from the game.
and as a bonus. Jacque villeneuve is missing from some F1 games since he was one of the very few who didn't license his likeness. One comedic change was as the reigning champion he wasn't in the dreamcast version of F1 World grand prix, which in addition to his Williams being censored, the Number 1 car was replaced with a silhouette and a driver called!
Williams Driver.
@@01Zipang lmao
That also explains why there's a favoritism with Dodge in that game. First car you drive when you start the game is a Dodge Viper and I remember there were loading screens that highlighted Dodge
2:50 “The deal was Rock solid, In fact it was one of the biggest of the time” Nice
I remember laughing so hard when I saw the Harvick Beer car and the reason why they did it, I swear it could compete with adult swim's april fools day pranks they pull.
One other funny example from N1 is that they got the copyright to use the CITGO #21 and the Wood Brothers, but didn't get the right to use Morgan Shepherd's name for some weird reason. So the car is supposedly being driven by the fictional Leroy Brittain of Gunnison Colorado, who for years I thought must be a real driver.
They also used Ken Schrader's #52 AC-Delco car from the Busch series in order to get around his Kodiak sponsorship.
N2's most notable ommisions would be the Yates cars and Ken Schrader. Less notably, Lake Speed, Brett Bodine, Kyle Petty and Bobby Hillin were left out as well.
Finally, someone from Colorado. I feel like this state kind of gets forgotten a bit. Sure it has some decent sports teams, but I never really see it anywhere in the media for long periods of time. I honestly forgot about this sponsor though, and it makes me happy to know that it's there. 10:10
Also Furniture Row Racing which was based in Colorado and not North Carolina like most teams, and they actually became a successful team, so much so they were better than Gibbs!
The kazoo kicking in at 13:12 made me spit my drink
Idk why. I feel like the intimidator should be classified apart of this list thanks to Teresa. Actually you could dedicate a whole video about her.
The amount of innuendoes and puns about Viagra tickled my funny bone.
Not sure if you’re going to see this but, the effort you put into your videos is fantastic. I love this channel and I’ve watched almost every single one of your videos and I’m always left wanting more! Keep up the good work!!!!
Exactly. I've gotten into NASCAR TH-cam. It's hard and takes tons of time and work. I love doing it. Mad respect.
The beginning of elly production 49.jr
Just wanna say, i really appreciate the use of the farmer soundtrack from Lego City Undercover, you're truly a man of great taste
When I worked at Winn-Dixie back in the day, Mark Martin would do his Viagra ad read on our music ad breaks. Shout out to Store #2022 in High Point, NC (that is now taken over by the Harris-Tetter that was relegated to the end space at the time).
5:02 For real. As a kid, I almost looked up what Extenze was
Came back just to say you must've had a fun time with that Viagra bit. Had me laughing harder than... alright, no more jokes
"...leaving it as 'Kid Rock: Bad' which, ʸᵉᵃʰ" 🤣
hi emily ur here also damn ur everywhere
Them banning tobacco sponsorships in motorsports has really done irreparable damage to the sport
I've always been of the opinion that tobacco products should be treated like beer:
Don't show anyone smoking the product (or imply it), throw in a "Smoke Responsibly" disclaimer somewhere and you can slap the logos wherever you want.
@@Dat-Mudkip They put "smoke responsibly" disclaimers, especially in the 2000s (just look at 2000 Australia Gp or 2005 Dutch Gp/Formula 3 masters). But since they are a not healthy product there was a problem. Also no tobacco product in racing showed Humans, they were just with the company logos (I mean look at McLaren in the 70s or Jordan in the 90s). Even I am a little sad that tobacco products are not in motor racing anymore btw
@@Dat-MudkipFor me instead I would use this way:
1) You can run tobacco liveries in a certain number of races
2) There must be a maximum number of teams sponsored by tobacco companies
3) Only 1 race can be sponsored by tobacco companies
Example: In the 2024 F1 championship, tobacco liveries can be seen in a max of 6 races out of 24 of the 2024 season, there can be only 2 teams (like only Ferrari and McLaren) with a Tobacco company as a title sponsor and only 1 race can use a tobacco company as a title sponsor (like Gran Premio de Espana Marlboro)
I think one reason they started banning tobacco in sports it's because in the 90's and the 2000s there were like half of the teams of a certain championship sponsored only by tobacco companies (like in 2003: In F1 there were Marlboro, West, Lucky Strike, Benson & Hedges and Mild Seven, In MotoGp there were Gauloises, Marlboro, Fortuna and Camel and in WRC there were Marlboro and 555)
Funny, insightful, well produced, informative, and no bitching about the playoff system. This may be one of my favorite videos yet!
let’s not forget Sprint is the main reason Justin Allgaier is still in the xfinity series, bc he was supposed to make his cup debut in a Verizon car, but it got nixed, and he never made that debut
Allgaier did run in cup for a bit though with mid/backmarker equipment
When I saw the topic of this video I was expecting it to be talking about the type of censorship we have here in Australia for tabaco sponsorship in archival footage of racing. If a locally produced broadcast wants to use archival footage of racing like the old ATCC or 1990's F1 races, they need to blurr every tabaco ad. This means that some famous car and driver combos like Ayrton Senna in his McLaren or Mark Skaife in his Nissan Skyline are basically reduced to being high speed blurr filters.
13:13 There will never ever be another instrument like the kazoo.
Read into the 2024 Supercars hat gate saga with Boost Mobile, that’s a funny one
I remember having the old Ricky Craven #25 die cast and being confused as hell as to why it said "RICKY" when I had a poster on my wall of the actual car.
Another banger EP vid. As always, outstanding music choice. I did a double-take hearing Tekken music in a NASCAR video.
To be fair, AT&T suing NASCAR wasn't the first time that they engaged in legal action as they also sued a driver named Mike Borkowski in 2000 for his Terrible performance with Bill Davis Racing
I think that Nextel kinda went overboard, considering Motorola only made phones, radios and other electronic stuff; but was never a service provider.
And probably made phones that Nextel sold in their stores.
Those Viagra bars were amazing, Watched it again and caught one more that I missed the first time round. Great video dude, you deserve way more subs
It took me so long to find a Kurt Busch chip ganassi no. 1 car because apparently Lionel couldn’t get monster energy’s approval. Eventually I had to find a GearWrench car but interesting how monster never made a lot of diecasts.
Marlboro always made such sick livery’s. It sucks they banned cigarette company’s from advertising on vehicles. (even though for a good cause)
holy shit the innuendos were ON POINT. As a certified 12 year old in an adult body, I am impressed.
This was a problem with injection molded model kits too. Monogram would have “Ford Motorsports” instead of Miller Genuine Draft on Rusty Wallace’s #2 car; etc.
You could get around this by buying custom water slide decals of beer and cigarette sponsors out of the scale modeling magazines so that the liveries would be more accurate.
Also having been watching someone else's NT2003-2004 playthroughs, there's a double standard that TCRF highlighted as well.
THe Winston and various alcohol logos are blurred out, at least on the graphics side (all bar one or two instances at least), but the audio is completely, and utterly, uncensored. Hearing the MRN crew welcome you to a Winston Cup event, knowing all the other instances are dummied out, is surprising. Apparently, eA let that one slide right on by. On the other hand, since NR2002-2003 got mentioned, NR4 from comments on other vids, patched a lot of bugs and then patched Dale out compleely, replacing him with Harvick, and yes it was using a 2001 roster for the base game as well.
2:52 you’re gonna milk this one to the end lol
Glad to see my proposal on here! (I mentioned the Harvick Busch car, tho Im probably not the only one that did that lol) Great video!
Extenze must have written a massive, eye-popping check to get by censors.
Another example is that the NASCAR on NBC social media accounts will blur out the logos on sponsors who aren't in NASCAR anymore. I first noticed this when they posted a picture of Martin Truex Jr's 4 Sonoma wins, and 5 Hour Energy was blurred iff his suit. It's really weird
So that's why Lionel made NASCAR trains in the 2000s
Literally any NASCAR merch got made in the 2000's no matter how ridiculous, from fish, to jewelry, to chocolates shaped like race cars.
Cingular actually bought AT&T, however AT&T was a more recognizable name so they decided to use the AT&T branding.
I love how Sprint is now just a part of T-Mobile these days
If sprint still was the title sponsor I bet you it would be the t mobile cup series
As a middle school aged fan of Green Day and NASCAR in the 2000s, imagine my surprise coming across a diecast of the 2006 Brian Vickers #25 car sponsored by them. I had never known such a thing to exist and was probably the first time I learned how goofy sponsorships can be in this sport. There was that Ghost car a couple years ago too, which is arguably more bizarre.
I’ll never get over how “The Race to End Suicide” sponsored Daniel Dye.
the viagara deal was rock solid. i see what ya did there buddy
13:17 you got the farm song stuck in my head! Lego City Undercover was and still is a blast. No pun intended for the last mission of that game.
Never miss a video. No one does nascar history videos as good as you and slapshoes. Keep up the great content brother.
The Mark Martin part actually reminded me of S1apsh0es. "Laugh all you want, but Mark Martin and Viagra saved lives, folks. I'll defend that one to the grave."
Exactly. I've got into NASCAR YouTubing on this channel. It takes tons of time and work, but I love doing it. Mad respect.
Just a heads up: Tony Raines was actually driving the Rick Santorum campaign car in the 2012 Daytona 500, not Josh Wise. I think Wise was in that car for the remainder of the year, though.
I never comment on videos but this was the most entertaining NASCAR video I've seen in a very long time. Keep up the great work!
FINALLY someone covered Poweradegate even a LITTLE bit 🙌🏼
4:52 I guess same goes for Porsche 911 Safari throwback livery - instead of Rothmans logo they put "Roughroads" with Rothmans font on the car, bc tobacco sponsorships are obviously banned. But why "Roughroads" instead of "Racing" like in racing games like Forza?
I remember hearing about the slayer debacle. Shit was pretty funny
I heard somewhere that King Diamond used to be a NASCAR fan.🤣
This type of censorship is peak Streisand Effect; OF COURSE kids are gonna go deliberately seek out who actually sponsors the RICKY car lol
It's even sillier nowadays due to access to the internet. Guarantee somewhere out there a decade ago, Timmy was wondering why Brad Keselowski's 12 car says "Brad" instead of "Miller Lite".
Yoo mad respect for still calling it Twitter🎉👏👏
Haha that Powerade in Gatorade victory lane is weird!
I didn't know that the dave blaney car was sponsored by ollies liquidation outlets
Man, i loved this remake xD
And i loved the new style!
( *_Also, Jr's Bud censorship is probably the best censorship ever. It fits somehow to the same style, and since Bud and DEI logos somehow are similar... yeh._* )
Also, EP, have you noticed that, in a way, *_Bud is back in Dale Earnhardt Inc._* ?
If you look the procedence of the 1 car (Chastain's), it ended in TRT because they bought CGR's charters back in '21. Well, the 1 car was part of CGR back then, and they got it from their merger with DEI, therefore, technically Trackhouse is the new DEI?
My grandfather had been a fan of nascar since the early fifties and I was born in 1990. One if my best memories is going in his garage and floor to ceiling and every wall covered in diecast cars in the packages. He had every one you could have including the mini helmets they used to make.
When the Viagra sponsor came up, my battery was fittingly at 69%
With the thing of HMS only supporting Pepsi product drinks would make sense on why the monster logo isn't on any of their cars in the nascar heat games
One that may be worth adding that is slightly different than "censorship" per se is Coca Cola's exclusive diecast deal (which includes subsidiaries Monster and Mellow Yellow) which interferes with NASCAR's diecast license with Lionel. Therefore, no Coke or Monster diecasts
The pole award program pre-Coors for U-21s was billed as the “Anheuser-Busch Pole Award” including every time Kyle Busch got a pole before he turned 21.
As for diecasts, Action put uncensored 1/64 scale versions of Dale Jr.’s Budweiser #8 on a screw-down stand and billed it an “adult collectible”
IIRC, Lionel did that a couple years ago with the only Busch sponsored scheme to see an authentics release to date.
They still do the base thing
I need the link to the Reddit discussion also the trump flute and kid rock bad bit killed me 14:02
I like the Lego city undercover music at the end part
I died at the big pp pills and tobacco part lmao!!
The whole Powerade shit was so weird. Putting Powerade bottles on the car in victory lane while victory lane was known as Gatorade Victory Lane at the time.
Rick Ware being more concerned about Slayer's shock lyrics than the charges against his son is ridiculous
Fun fact: Little Debbie even makes sure their truck drivers aren’t on the road on Saturdays.
New drinking game. take a shot every time Petty is on screen
Glad this isn't a video of Richard in peak dominance, that would be guaranteed alcohol poisoning.
That Carl Edwards game just totally escaped my memory until you mentioned it. The memories omg.
Can't wait to see you on NWP Tonight!!
yea i remember asking my dad why rusty wallaces car looked different on my shirt then the one on the track! he drove the miller light tbird, the tbird on my shirt said something different ....cant quite remember
If memory serves, didn't Fox blur out Robby Gordon's Motorola sponsorship until it was changed to have the Digital Media Player underscore??
