An Architect's Own Family Home Designed to Stand the Test of Time (House Tour)

  • An architect’s own family home is often an insight into their design ethos and the Melbourne home that Architecton Director Nick Lukas designed for himself and his family is no exception. Balancing the simplicity of rectilinear forms and raw materials such as concrete, steel and glass with elegant, detailed interiors, it is a contemporary family home designed to stand the test of time.
    Externally, the architecture reads as a series of intersecting light and dark planes. Despite the abundance of glass, the front façade is deliberately closed, with a deep setback and double-height off-form concrete wall creating a sense of protection from the street. Operable black louvre screens create an additional layer across the glazing that allows the level of privacy and sunlight to be controlled.
    The interior design continues the use of concrete but balances the rawness of the material with refined detailing and a contemporary yet timeless palette of natural stone and delicate Japanese ceramic tiles. The tiles are employed behind the bar in an effect that captures the movement and sheen of water, while in the bathrooms, Elba marble creates a sense of contemporary luxury. Glazing is strategically positioned to open onto views of the landscaped yard, in which the garden will grow and, with time, come to surround the home.
    Exemplifying a unified approach to design, this contemporary home sees architecture, interior design and landscape all come together to create a place where the family can settle and put down roots.

    Everyone has their ideal homes in mind, and him being an architect, I completely understand why he made his house to be the way it is. Very modern with lots of unique architectural designs. It’s very beautiful indeed! But personally though, it’s not my style. If God wills I get to build my own house in the future, i’d love for my house to have lots of light coming in (cuz I get scared of dark spaces), bright, airy, with a good amount of wooden textures inside, with green plants- to give off a Zen kind’of vibe. Because I want my home to be a relaxing place to go home to. I want it to be zen, homy & cozy, light and airy, but modern still! 😍

    This undoubtedly resonates the notion of an "Ideal home". From the Tadao Ando's Concrete on the farcade to the interior finishes. These materials are cohesively magnificent. Is there an access to the floor plans of the home?

    • @TheLocalProject
      @TheLocalProject  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Brilliant analysis! We don't have floor plans unfortunately..!

    • @oneofonedesign4178
      @oneofonedesign4178 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Please don't compare this to Tadao Ando's work. This is far from it and just because this house uses the same materials or tries to, does not make it to that of Tadao Ando. To me this house is more about materiality and the very expensive products they used rather than talking about the design itself and what this house offers through its design that makes it more successful than standard homes. Well done to the architect for achieving his vision though.

      Does this mean a child raised by parents that lived in apartment has never experienced a homely upbringing?

    • @gcg8187
      @gcg8187 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pulanala1421 umm no not quite. You see, this place looks nothing like a 'normal' apartment. So comparing this to an apartment has no purpose.
      A kid raised in an apartment would probably experience a homely upbringing, assuming it's a normal sized place with both parents home.

      They design homes with the different seasons of the year in mind. This video just happened to be filmed on an overcast day making the home appear to be cold and dark. On a clear summers day, the large windows will allow fro plenty of sunlight to flood through and brighten up the rooms.

    Since the house was built by an architect, the design interior definitely stands out.
    What's even more surprising is that the video quality is very good.
    Original and delicate interiors With sheer dedication, the final product is usually stunningly beautiful. GooD!
