    Brendel's was the first Waldstein I have listened to. Such exquisite phrasing, such beautifully coloured tone, the amazing lightness of those arpeggios...

    Happy 246th Birthday, Ludwig van!
    Brendel is still my fave Beethoven interpreter. I used to live near him (Alf, not Ludwig) and sometimes heard the sounds of practice as I passed. Lovely man.

    I love this version as Brendel played with the right tempo and not too fast. Moreover, each note is well defined and dynamics are equally excellent!

    Shoot, I think it's a darn shame that more people haven't viewed this video. I consider it the best performance of the piece that I've heard here on TH-cam.
    Mr. Brendel just creates a very beautiful, mellow and serene tone unlike any of the other pianists I've heard. There are so many more adjectives I want to use, like his light and delicate touch in the opening creating such a wonderfully rounded and sonorous tone which played at the perfect tempo blend so nicely together. The music just flows off his fingers so to speak. The magnificent, deft touch and clarity of the individual notes as well as the phrasing and voicing of the melody is astonishing. I wish I could say more, but my words are so inadequate at expressing the brilliance of this amazing performance, which is clearly heard upon listening. It's played smooth and sweetly with great delicacy and grace where called for, and very clean and marked, with highly spirited energy and force when it's necessary.
    Just a great and inspired performance of Beethoven from a renowned master of his interpretation.
    I've very much enjoyed listening and can only hope more people will come and do the same.
    Thanks

      I don't like Brendel's tone as much as I like Rubinstein's or Zimerman's tone!
      But I agree Brendel is a wonderful pianist. I also like his Beethoven as his Schubert.
      In general at Beethoven I prefer Solomon, Backhaus or Gulda. But at the Waldstein I also like Rubinstein, Zimerman and Brendel! :D

    I have started to listen to a number of pianists playing this. I usually decide within a minute whether or not I want to continue listening. Some take an impressively fast tempo, which I find distracting rather than energizing. I think this is one of the more difficult Beethoven sonatas to bring off in performance. Brendel so far is bringing it off very well (I’m listening as I type). With Beethoven, I think one always has to bring out the dramatic structure as well as capturing the “mood” of the themes and transitions. That’s hard to do at an extreme tempo. Brendel’s tempo is just right for me. [Just finished listening to all of it. The last movement is amazing!]

    • @dzunglong4034
      @dzunglong4034 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yes I love this tempo. I don't know why some people rush the beginning so fast, then fail to keep up with their own tempo whenever a "harder' part comes.

      I totally agree. I like to listen to the same piece from numerous pianists. I want them to be different than each other. I think, for Beethoven Sonatas, Brendel is like a benchmark and anyone who is studying Beethoven Sonatas can have some takeaways by listening to him. His interpretations are so natural. They just feel so right.

    Like Chameleon, he is a performer who finely changes his playing style and devises a performance that is most enjoyed by the audience at each moment. There is complexity that I cannot simply talk to with such a performer. Basically, he kept the teachings of master Fischer and Kempf's summer class until the beginning of the 21st century.
