I must have listened to Beethoven's piano sonatas hundreds (if not thousands) of times (not to mention his other works)! Yer each time I am overwhelmed by his staggering achievements, specially when played by such masters as Alfred Brendel.
it is difficult to accept any other interpretation of Beethoven's piano compositions than those of Brendel--he plays with such demonic virtuoso...the greatest captain of his era, surely!
It's interesting to listen to Andras Schiff's lectures on the Beethoven sonatas, in particular his dismay at how many artists disregard Beethoven's explicit markings and unconventional commands. Then you listen to Brendel and recognize that he follows Beethoven's wishes to a tee.
Just a personal preference, at 11:33 - 11:38 (as well as some other places), i would play the bass notes with just a little more weight. But Grandmaster Brendel's rendition of course is the reference standard. The first and second movement are awesome... Liszt always emphasized how difficult it was, connecting the 1st and the 3rd movement and i think Brendel did it well, here.

Ginger Hottie....Radu lupu affects me even more. But that's not to criticise this, which is marvellous. Pity those souls lost by the fashion in education that causes music no longer to be taught to the young (here in the UK, I mean). Civilisation survives on the continent where (surprise!) children are not scared of or intimidated by classical music if only they are exposed to it.
I am a huge admirer of Horowitz, but when it comes to Beethoven piano works, I prefer Brendel. He "owns" the music. Others sound like they're trying, but for me, Brendel's command is unparalleled.

I have never heard this sonata played with such authority, control and brilliance. Brendel's interpretation is from the inside out; it is perfect.

转：录过三次贝多芬钢琴奏鸣曲全集的布兰德尔，1962-64年间录音的Vox版为第一次。布兰德尔并没有刻意作态，不过音乐听来庄严有余、幻想不足，虽然正统却缺乏魅力，尤其第一乐章踏瓣的运用我相当不喜欢。第三乐章展现其触键的扎实，但气势上总觉得虚虚的，没有堆砌出乐曲的高潮。布兰德尔第三次全本录音也推出精致的布纹纸盒装，相对于他 Vox录音的率真自然，这一回布兰德尔显然无愧一代宗师名号，细心地雕琢这首名曲。但是，不知道是因为“月光”的诠释已有定论或其它原因，只觉得布兰德尔超越了过去的自己，但是却没有超越其它大师的美学范畴，因此只能算是“乖乖牌”诠释。
