Bobby Bare's version of Detroit City was very popular in Ireland and possibly in England around 1962... It is also what I call my ghost song ...around that time I was at a 21st birthday in a railway carriage /caravan in Gyles Quay..a seaside area outside of Dundalk in Ireland ..That song was one of just a few up to date songs that were played on the record player at that party...Played more than once.. For some unknown reason every time I am in Gyles Quay ,,and looking out to sea ..Detroit City comes into my mind ...and every time I hear that song ,that night at the Quay of 55 years ago, comes into my mind .. GHOSTS !
I'm 15 and my friends listen to all kinds of music like this and thus is probably one of my favorite yea there's some kids like that still around and plus I'm from South Mississippi
This song always reminds me of the Uptown neighborhood in Chicago, where many Appalachian and Southern migrants lived back in the 1970s. I liked to hang out at a bar underneath the El tracks, called "Margie's Hillbilly Heaven", so's I could pump quarters into the juke box and play all that great 1960s and 1970s country music. Sad to say, the neighborhood is gentrifying now . . . no more southerners . . . perhaps they took a cue from Bobby Bare and all went home . . .
My dream of home looks like the Richard Harrow character's last moments on Boardwalk Empire. Not being (overly) maudlin but just about everyone else's gone on ahead.
