Great video, but I have one piece of constructive criticism. When talking about foley sounds and music, keeping the background music of the video going really distracts from it. It's especially notable for Percy's promise, where you mention how interesting it is that they had no music at the station in the early dub.
I did think that while editing this video yes That was me being veeeeeery cautious about copyright claims Given how long these videos take to export and upload I didn't want to have to spend several days going back and forth and back and forth making little anjustments to appease the copyright laws

When I first saw most of the UK dub of the show on YT, I had no idea there was an early narration for Series 3 as I saw the official versions (I don't count S4 due to its lines being recorded naturally, despite the lack of music or lines said earlier, but those were fixed). I first saw them a few years later only on Dailymotion (cause if there's any full episode to watch that is blocked, it's that site). I would point out that those lines the early narration did that was not present later in the UK dub like Famous Visitor was also said in the official US dub. In my opinion, I never really liked each narration that Angelis did in between early and official releases (save for Henry's Forest and Christmas Adventure). Not saying they're bad, but apart from those awkward moments of silence or lack of music (or simply reused lines that are the same as the next), but the audio quality differs throughout the season in A and B, not to mention he often rushes his narrations in a few areas and they aren't exactly timed (Tender Engines is a prime example). However, I'd be lying if I didn't say I relate to Angelis' breathing cause when reading my character lines especially of my own series, I often mess up on a few takes and having to redo them, only for the breathing to come in and I had to try and find ways to make it not present, sometimes works - other times doesn't and I had to accept of what I have. Overall though, I gravitate towards the US dub more cause of how George Carlin timed his narrations and gave the emotions naturally. But for anyone who enjoys both early and official UK dubs, that's fine too. Also, you're not alone about Michael Angelis' Diesel voice - I do too (and I wonder if that would later influence that said voice for when Kerry Shale voiced him in CGI).

As a US Viewer, I never knew there was 2 versions of the UK dub in Season 3 with the 16 episodes. But if I had to pick one, I choose the redub cuz even though there are some lines that were cut out from the earlier dub (which would be used in the US dub) or altered, they actually makes it a little more natural and unique. Also I didn’t noticed until now but some of the music in the official UK dub is missing in the US dub, like Percy’s Promise and Thomas and Stepney.
While I am going with the official/final dub of the narrations for Series 3. I mean honestly, is it a coincidence at all that the early dubs coming straight to video came right around the time all 16 episodes were airing in season 2 of the show, then it goes on a year hiatus so the remaining half of season 3 can be filmed, thus officially beginning season 3 of the US series in 1993 for the remaining 10 episodes (not to mention many of the episodes in the US series only had one story featured instead of the usual 2)? Oh, and of course…… Daisy being dropped from season 3.
That seems odd that they cut out the line "He thinks no engine should be famous but him" from the official UK dub of Gordon and the Famous Visitor. I found that strange that it was just silence in that scene since it was kept in the US dub.
Season 3's history just keeps getting more interesting. I wonder if you or anyone else has considered taking the best parts of these dubs and mushing them together.
I grew up watching the official UK dubs on VHS, Yes they had them on the VHS releases as a pose to the early dubs, But for me the official UK dub is way better than the early ones.
After seeing the Toby's Tightrope section of this video, I now remember having the Trust Thomas early dubs version on VHS as a kid, but I had Percy's Promise the official version on VHS, but I borrowed the Trust Thomas Official on VHS from a friend and compared them myself, but I didn't think that they were redubbed after the early releases.
38:32 Genuinely the quality of the mic/studio recording of Series 3B is so jarring to me compared to 3A that I just switch to the Carlin dubs for that half.
It’s crazy how so many casual/fringe viewers of the show won’t realise how a gentle story about an engine enjoying a forest and being with nature and listening to birds could have been so controversial!
I think the dub I default to is the one with more the intact script. I just generally prioritise context over else. I think what these dubs signify is a new set of expectations, of which editing Thomas must've been in. I think the only countries Thomas went to prior to 1989/90 were Norway and Sweden in 1985 and 1990(?), and S1 and 2 only had to worry about making sure the shots lined up with Ringo's narration. With the financial backing of Japan, and the influence from Shining Time Station for S3, I have a feeling it may have been more important for Britt to make the episodes compatible for more narrators than Michael Angeles. I have to wonder if this was conciously on the mind of John L. Wright and David Mitton when editing the episodes, and making sure the episodes equally suited George Carlin and the Japanese Cast. On a more grounded note, I feel that, as opposed to S1 and 2 having to force some stories into 4:30 seconds, Series 3 has the opposite problem of 4:30 not being enough meaning narration is hasty (A Scarf for Percy) or there's narration going on until the very end of the episode (No Joke for James). For Angeles, this means either speaking normally but having lines cut closer together, or having faster pace narration that kinda feels out of place. Overall, Series 3 is a pretty big mess, but atleast there's plenty pf variety in how to watch it.

The original airings of US dubs for these episodes happened barely a few days/weeks after the VHS releases of the early UK dubs, and I noticed how the US first got the music that was missing from the original UK video releases. For example, the scene where no music played while Duck explored his branch line in the UK version of Donald’s Duck was not the case when the episode aired on Shining Time Station. The missing music was intact for the US dub but the UK didn’t receive it until the new narration came out on tv. It’s like Unlucky Tug said in his video about physical media releases- it’s never consistent.
I find it interesting you say that Thomas Gets Bumped is your least favourite S3 episode. For me, it's my personal favourite non-RWS episode in all of Thomas, mainly for how well it sticks to the lore and shows character growth between Thomas and Bertie.
This always fascinated me when watching the UK Dub of Thomas on TH-cam, and discovering the early dubs. In my opinion of each dub of the classic series it goes something like this. Series 1, easily the UK Dub with the dialogue being bold and cruel from time, while the US Dub soften it and while I grew up with the US Dub, discovering the UK Dub was more fascinating and I just loved it more. Series 2, like Series 1, the UK Dub as I do love Ringo’s Narration. Although George Carlin does a fascinating job in his dub of Season 2 with some of the character voices such as Duck, Diesel, Bill and Ben, Daisy, Harold, Trevor, and especially Donald and Douglas. But yeah, still prefer the UK Dub overall. Series 3 is a bit of a challenging one, as probably the first batch of the TV dubs of Series 3 over the early VHS Dub can be a bit better, with the added music that the US Dub sadly doesn’t have as most of the audio from music comes from the early dubs while some dubs actually used the final music. So part of me think Series 3A is the TV Dub with a few exceptions from the original early Dub on VHS, while 3B is the US Dub as while I do like Angelis narration, the mic made him sound nasally, the only exception I have is the UK version of the final episode over the US one! Series 4, while I absolutely love George’s dub as it’s my favorite George Carlin dub, I have to go with Angelis due to the added music and his narration is just fantastic! Series 5 is honestly both dubs as both aren’t perfect. The UK Dub, while better with narration with the added dialogue that I love, sadly has some of its episodes with lack of music, especially in Lady’s Hatt’s birthday party. While the US Dub and I can understand if not anyone is a fan of Alec Baldwins narration, in my opinion is the funniest narrator in this season, similar to Angelis, but his dub has the added music, so again I belive it’s a tie and depends on what episode? Series 6 is easily the UK Dub as Michael Angelis sounds fantastic while Alec is unfortunately boring. Series 7, UK Dub as while Angelis may sound boring at times, it still feels like classic Thomas while the US Dub was trying to be like the HIT Era and not in a good way. Overall, the UK Dub is the best for nealry all of them, but I won’t lie I do have a soft spot for the US Dubs of Series 1-5 due to my nostalgia biased. But yeah, UK Dub is definitely the more superior!

Honestly it’s a hard nut to crack when it comes to deciding which version of Angelis’ narration of the season is considered preferable I will say though with technology these days it could be possible to splice in elements of both narrations he did to try and make an “ideal” version of each episode
I could literally name all the songs used in the video without even looking at the music list, a very informative watch. I personally lean into the early dubs for some charming little deliveries here nor there but the official dubs are still good too.
My things are the James voice and yeah less shouting. Also the inclusion of the engines moving dialogue (a goods train, a goods train) makes the story’s more RWS . I don’t like how they started to remove those lines.
I personally prefer the early dubs, Angelis sounds more natural and there’s no weird fuzz sound in the background when he talks. Plus, there isn’t any breathing sounds and the dialogue fits up with the footage cuts
I would have watched the early dubs on VHS as a kid, but then the later dubs when watching the DVDs as an adult, but I guess so much time had passed in between that I never noticed they were different. When watching the scenes compared I recognise both, but the early ones are generally the ones which feel more familiar to me. I guess nostalgia trumps hearing something more recently for me in this case. Also, great choice of background music when talking about the post train episode.
This is a good video, but in all honestly... kinda feels like the background music of the video itself is too loud. It is very apparent in the Edward, Trevor, and the Really Useful Party. The background version of Trevor's theme clashes with the episode version.
Personally, the original UK dubs seem way less exciting than the Carlin Dubs. Carlin had a different voice for every character and made them have personality where as Angelis, all the characters sound the same and there's not a whole lot of personal. It's not just Angelis, I feel Ringo had a similar feel as well.
I could be completely wrong but I think they we’re more focused on getting the US Dub out first so that could be set to air alongside Shining Time Station on time in 1991 and then I’m assuming at some point afterwards Micheal Angelis got the job for narrating Thomas and had to rush him to get the UK Dub on VHS in 1991 becoming the Early Dub before they had him re-record the UK Dub for TV Airings in 1992 creating the Official Dub. Making this the first time for 2 Things 1. That this is the first time that a specific dub got 2 versions in 1 country and 2. That an Official Thomas Dub was Released in the US first instead of the UK as per usual in this time period. Plus this video (which is great coming off The Unlucky Tug’s Thomas VHS & DVD Oddities Video) sort of proves that and it about time we got a Exclusive Season 3 Comparison Video. Great Job Buddy, you’re starting to go up in the ranks of The Unlucky Tug for Best Thomas TH-camr Ever! Who knew TH-camrs could get SO BIG just reviewing a Show about “Talking Trains” and Usual Broke Luke is one of them.

Overall, the UK Dub is the best for nealry all of them, but I won’t lie I do have a soft spot for the US Dubs of Series 1-5 due to my nostalgia biased. But yeah, UK Dub is definitely the more superior!

In all seriousness it was interesting video comparing Angelis’ narration of the season. Honestly it’s a hard nut to crack when it comes to deciding which version of Angelis’ narration of the season is considered preferable I will say though with technology these days it could be possible to splice in elements of both narrations he did to try and make an “ideal” version of each episode
I could literally name all the songs used in the video without even looking at the music list, a very informative watch. I personally lean into the early dubs for some charming little deliveries here nor there but the official dubs are still good too.
Do we know how Thomas was edited at this point? On computer with primitive editing software?

My things are the James voice and yeah less shouting. Also the inclusion of the engines moving dialogue (a goods train, a goods train) makes the story’s more RWS . I don’t like how they started to remove those lines.
I personally prefer the early dubs, Angelis sounds more natural and there’s no weird fuzz sound in the background when he talks. Plus, there isn’t any breathing sounds and the dialogue fits up with the footage cuts

Early is great but the final is a bit more cleaned up
I would have watched the early dubs on VHS as a kid, but then the later dubs when watching the DVDs as an adult, but I guess so much time had passed in between that I never noticed they were different. When watching the scenes compared I recognise both, but the early ones are generally the ones which feel more familiar to me. I guess nostalgia trumps hearing something more recently for me in this case.
Also, great choice of background music when talking about the post train episode.

This is a good video, but in all honestly... kinda feels like the background music of the video itself is too loud. It is very apparent in the Edward, Trevor, and the Really Useful Party. The background version of Trevor's theme clashes with the episode version.
That was me being veeeery cautious about using the episode footage and audio while trying to avoid copyright claims

Personally, the original UK dubs seem way less exciting than the Carlin Dubs. Carlin had a different voice for every character and made them have personality where as Angelis, all the characters sound the same and there's not a whole lot of personal. It's not just Angelis, I feel Ringo had a similar feel as well.

I could be completely wrong but I think they we’re more focused on getting the US Dub out first so that could be set to air alongside Shining Time Station on time in 1991 and then I’m assuming at some point afterwards Micheal Angelis got the job for narrating Thomas and had to rush him to get the UK Dub on VHS in 1991 becoming the Early Dub before they had him re-record the UK Dub for TV Airings in 1992 creating the Official Dub. Making this the first time for 2 Things 1. That this is the first time that a specific dub got 2 versions in 1 country and 2. That an Official Thomas Dub was Released in the US first instead of the UK as per usual in this time period. Plus this video (which is great coming off The Unlucky Tug’s Thomas VHS & DVD Oddities Video) sort of proves that and it about time we got a Exclusive Season 3 Comparison Video. Great Job Buddy, you’re starting to go up in the ranks of The Unlucky Tug for Best Thomas TH-camr Ever! Who knew TH-camrs could get SO BIG just reviewing a Show about “Talking Trains” and Usual Broke Luke is one of them.
