On the one hand, I can see why a railway enthusiast like Reverend Awdry would be pissed at "Henry's Forest" due to the show priding itself on realism, but on the other hand, it's kind of weird that he acts like Henry can't be interested in the beauty of nature.

  • @AxelWedstar411
    @AxelWedstar411 2 ปีที่แล้ว +75

If an engine can understand the concept of friendship, I don't see why they couldn't also have an appreciation for the beauty and tranquility of nature. Which is basically all Henry's love for the forest is.

It's just really ironic how a steam engine, a machine that is powered by wood and released a shitton of pollutants into the environment, is concerned about the well-being of a forest and its inhabitants. I think they can absolutely have an appreciation for beauty, but a forest is such a backwards choice.

7:10 I kinda like this change with Diesel. Rather than Gordon suddenly feeling down about hearing “some diesels” talk about engines getting scrapped, he actually hears it on screen before asking the fat controller.
I also have a headcanon that he’s not the same diesel from series 2. Over a thousand of his class was built, and he wasn’t given a name either, just diesel. For all we know, that might be the next diesel in line, like a cockroach. Get rid of one and two more appear

I don't think it necessarily to do with money. From what I learned from Unlucky Tug's video on Skarloey, Allcroft had a weird thing about not directly referencing real life engines into the stories. Only exception being Stepney though he may as well have been a completely original character with how much his backstory was changed.
It would've been cool if they'd adapted this story as dark as the book counterpart, but heyho we can only imagine.

This is my personal favourite series of the show because of a lot of reasons. It had the best set of stories and it’s the series I grew up watching the most, one of many childhood nostalgias as I have a lot of VHS tapes of series 3 episodes. While I am on the subject of episodes picking my favourites was really hard but here are my favourites.
    1. Henry’s Forest - I love the soundtrack, set and story of this episode and how it expended on Henry’s character. I could also relate to it in a way that Henry has that special place he loves and for me, there’s a park near where I live that I love to go to, that was a connection to an episode I made. I also found the story moving that bad weather ruins the forest which makes Henry sad but the other characters come together to put the forest right again to bring back Henry’s special place. I think it’s a sad story with a happy ending. And I can’t wait for when you do your video on this specific episode
    2. Percy’s Promise - I think this is an iconic episode for the character of Percy and from my childhood. I love it because of Percy’s keeping a promise to Thomas when he takes the passengers home from the seaside, even in bad weather. And what I also love is that the moral is done perfectly, and I don’t know if I’m right about this but the moral to this episode is when you make a promise you keep it, and that’s what Percy did for Thomas
    3. All At Sea - The best episode set of the harbour and Duck’s story in the show. I love how we got to know the character of Ducks and what he dreams of. And the last show with Thomas, Percy and Duck looking over the sea with the sunrise was beautiful and one of my favourite shots in the show
    4. Escape - Now this is an epic story and the best debut episode for a character. I couldn’t believe how Oliver was introduced when I watched this episode and I praise Douglas for saving him and Toad from scrap as he and Donald where in that same situation in the last series. And Oliver’s escape music is one of the best soundtracks I’ve heard in the show
    5. Thomas Percy and The Post Train - The scenery and music is why I love this episode. I don’t remember watching this as a kid, but I remember seeing clips from the episode on tape
    Finally my honourable mentions:
Gordon and the Famous Visitor, Donald’s Duck, Thomas Percy and The Dragon, Mavis, Toby’s Tightrope, Buzz Buzz, Heroes, Percy James and The Fruitful Day, Thomas and Percy’s Christmas Adventure

I really like Time for Trouble. The dynamic between James and Toby is a real treat in the grand scheme of things. One engine is shiny and red, and the other is dusty and brown. And with those opposites together, you get something great. James pushing Toby to the works is great because Toby’s theme is playing in an orchestra style while the two double head.

I never really thought to take a full analysis of why classic Thomas & Friends was so good for a period of time; while it grew as a favourite, I remember watching a number of kids' shows contemporary to the '90s that I remember fondly, such as The Raccoons, The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, contemporary British-made children's series aired on the BBC, etc. However I can more understand from how you've deconstructed each season - very well with good relief moments I might add - what makes them distinct on the whole, in a way that made me appreciate things that I might have sensed before but couldn't pin down due to my chaotic management order.
My guess about the liberties taken with 'Tender Engines' against the original source was that the producers wanted to try and deviate from spoiling the dramatic undertones behind Oliver's discovery by hinting towards them in the episode prior-hand for effect. I can appreciate how the loss of family was meant to sell a point in Gordon's arc in the Railway Series juxtaposed with the themes that endeared the Reverend Awdry, but when considering how David Mitton clearly wished to set up the rescue of Oliver in a way that would really hammer in the impact to the audience, I can understand why he would choose to play down the dark beats of 'Tenders for Henry'. Besides which, they were not able to produce the engine model for 'Flying Scotsman' despite it being planned; one of the many things from the production of the classic series that had to be cut due to budget and writing constraints.
I think also the continuity slip-ups with the series mainly have to do with the fact that ordering of episodes has always been based upon the order which they originally aired on TV, and not as such with the order the producers may have had in mind. That aside, there's nothing I would add that has already been elaborated in the video. Good one mate. Regards, Samuel Farris.

I have three huge problems with Series 3.
Firstly, Michael Angelis is not Ringo Starr, so it feels like a downgrade on that front.
Secondly, the lack of any narrative flow or continuity (apart from the Oliver stories, everything just sort of happens) makes this series hard to watch in order.
Thirdly, the original stories are very childish and naff compared to the Awdry ones, which makes the whiplash between stories grinding. For example, we go from a hell of a lot of technobabble in Mavis and Toby’s Tightrope to “the vicar forgot to put up the posters, now no one will know about the party” in the very next episode. Even as a child I thought “No Joke For James” was a pretty naff episode.

I just love the lighting and the visuals It’s just so cool to me this was also George Carlin’s first narrations of the season, even though he would later go on and renarrated seasons, one to two as well as episodes that Ringo Star didn’t narrate in the US dub and this was also Michael Angelis’ first season as narrator who is the longest running English speaking narrator from season three in 1991-1992 all the way until season 16 in 2012 which was amazingly a 31 year span and just showed how much he cared and loved about the Thomas franchise as a narrator.

So while the US got those scripts ready for STS, that's when they did the re-dubs for the UK broadcasts.

Series 3 is a good series! My first ever Thomas VHS tape i owned as a toddler wasn't series 3, in fact it was a compilation vhs tape called 'Thomas The Tank Engine & Friends: Thomas' Train & 17 Other Stories' which did consist of a good handful of series 3 episodes like 'Percy's Promise', 'Thomas, Percy, and the Dragon', 'Toby's Tightrope', Thomas, 'Percy, and the Post Train', and 'Heroes'. It was a tape i had for a good few years but lost when DVD's came about. I never seen much of series 3 since in didn't own it on DVD. But the episodes i did see i loved, and Thomas, Percy, and the Dragon is one that sticks out for me. Percy's Promise being another. Since then i've been privileged enough to have binged watched all of series 3 on TH-cam all those years later, and i have to agree with you, it's up there with my favorite along with series 5. Everything you've mentioned in regards to the depth, and how the vastness, and realism of the sets suck you in along with the music, the passionate narration from Michael Angelis, and the writing. I've really been enjoying your reviews on each season so far mate, even though i'm a bit late to the party with this upload lol I look forward to hearing your reviews on, imo, the not so good CGI series. I've already heard you get tore into series 8, which is when the show started to decline imo, so i look forward to seeing what you think about the CGI era, and Mattel's abomination. I have more memories of watching vhs tapes of Series 3 with some notable standouts episodes. Some include Percy’s Promise, The trouble with mud, Henry’s Forest, Thomas, Percy & the Mail Train, and Escape. However, watching back on the others was also a grand time (especially All at Sea).
Henry’s forest getting controversy was something I did NOT expect to come up as a video topic and I’m sort of glad that I didn’t hear about this until I watched this review. Even after that, I didn’t really mind because everyone has their own opinions.
The sets, music, and production value were the most recognizable for me in this series more than ever.

Speaking of Audrey's thoughts, It seems very common for original authors to despise the film/TV adaptations. That was the same with PL Travers hating Disney's take on Mary Poppins, Stephen King's disapproval on Stan Kubrick's version of the Shining, Anthony Burgess and A Clockwork Orange and of course Roald Dahl's views on most of the adaptations of his stories.
Personally, if I wrote a book, I'd welcome a film version, as long as they don't sneak in a fart joke, especially if it's a family movie.

In my opinion, the good Reverend's criticism came more from essentially having strangers play around in his world without his say-so. He was notoriously cantankerous with the illustrators of the books when they didn't live up to his exacting standards.
All that aside, the Rule 55 issue could've been dealt with by changing a few lines and having Henry pull over into a siding in the forest instead of on the main line.
Instead of the driver, it could be a signalman in a nearby signal box who flags Henry down and tells him and his driver they're ahead of time, so they have to be sidetracked in the forest siding to allow other traffic to pass.
Henry and his crew don't mind, as they enjoy the peace and beauty of the forest, and they're always sorry to leave when the points clang over ahead of them and the signal changes so they have to get back underway again.
Rule 55 honored, and the story saved.
