  • Hannah and Sam are high school sweethearts and saw a problem in the protein powder industry. When it comes to getting your powder into a water bottle it’s pretty impossible to do it without it spilling everywhere. So, they put together an innovative yet simple product to solve that problem - the Bosscoop. With 1000 sold so far, they’re in the Tank asking for 25k for 20% of their business. Will the Sharks have a penchant for protein?
    Company Website: bosscoop.com/
An international sensation, Shark Tank AUS features entrepreneurs pitching for investment in the Tank from our Sharks, five venture capitalists willing to invest their own money in exchange for equity.

To all of you thinking this business is a no-brainer...
They came up with a solution to a problem that is largely neglected. They had to research the market, design the prototypes for size, weight, balance once full, proper curvature, color transparency, etc. They had to figure out the material, learn about health friendly plastic, find a manufacturer, make a deal, and invest in a couple of batches.
They also had to think about the packaging, design, razor slice their margins, find the right influencer, get in contact, invest a lot of money in the process, and launch. They maybe even had a website with payment processing integration at the time of this pitch, plus some social media presence.
They were also clever enough to come on Shark Tank, with a presentable pitch, a properly set up legal entity, with the right valuation, ultimately scoring a deal with two sharks.
    Yes, very easy...

As much as I don't like this Australian version of the sharks, and as someone with extensive experience in startups, they are right: a product is not a business and this is a product. Business is when you have a product and you execute on it, not just have "I'll sell it in supermarkets" as a strategy. It's when you have vision on numbers and projections, how to get you there, what kind of people you need with you to execute. Ideas and products are worthless without proper execution and team, and that's what a business is.

Kind of like bar rescue. Jon has different people that he'll bring in depending on the resturant.

    • @MrSupdup
      @MrSupdup 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

Steve Baxter is a venture capitalist. His company is literally just people that go around managing all these business day-to-day.
For the rest of them, they tend to offer "mentorship" - which is a 30 minute coffee once a month - not actual management support or business consulting for the business. For this scoop, after their 20 phone calls, once they found some buyers and some stores that were happy to stock it they would be done, and it's on the entrepreneurs to manage the business from then on.
If the business gets massive, then the shark might agree to sit on the board and so the company gets around 10 hours of their time a month. At best the smaller businesses get a business persons phone number to call when they've got tough questions, and some support when a bigger business approaches them for a takeover.

I feel like this would be good to sell these to the supplement makers to include with their product as a marketing bit

Have you tried licensing the product to a supplement manufacturer so they can include the scoop with their product - not sure if they also include sqoops like baby formula manufacturers do here in South Africa. Instead of selling a handful of scoops at a large margin, you can get a couple of cents on every supplement sold.
In South Africa the biggest supplement manufacturer is USN. Ceo and founder facebook.com/albe.geldenhuys.1

Neil Oliver thanks, Neil! We sure do have that plan already in the works, it was unfortunately edited out of the pitch! Has always been the plan for the product :)
Also for reference, something else edited out is our granted Aus and US design patents.
      Thanks for the comments!

Lol muscletech and probably other brands have a scooper with a lid attached to it that resembles a funnel. Scoop the pre-workout, close the lid, then pour into bottle. I was super excited when I saw it in the pre-workout powder
