This scene made me tear up, he was at the end of his straw, all the terrible things he’s done, finally caught up and he realized now at the end he’s lost so much because of his hatred and these things he’s done. So in a final act to regain some semblance of the peace he once knew, he ask for forgiveness from a once enemy, the enemy that has done the same things, the enemy that knows him perhaps quite well because of the same terrible things they’ve done. Because in a world of unjust sometimes maybe only an enemy can understand and forgive you. Because at the end we all die and as Broker put it meet our due, hatred should be the last thing we leave with. This scene was heartbreaking.

"I dont feel anything" true numbness, people say they dont want to feel pain but if you're ever at this level....all you want to do is feel and you cant even cry or yell, speaking physically hurts, and you cant even fake emotions anymore. Your face starts to feel like useless skin and your body doesnt listen to you anymore because moving or performing any action fills your mind with "why?" And complete hatred for moving for something you could care less about. Your mind is so focused on wanting to feel but at the same time the controlling numbness keeps the phrase "for what?"

Yes, same here. He is absolutely war torn... what happened to the Native American population was genocide and it is obviously a curse on his conscious as it is eating away at him. But, this isn't everything. Remember that in this movie, Sergeant Metz was also once a Confederate soldier in the Civil War.... and I would venture to guess that his "melancholia" (PTSD/Depression) was severally exacerbated or even stems from that war. Now add the Native American mistreatment, and you have a real recipe for disaster that you can clearly see in his eyes. Great performance by Rory Cochrane

This reminds me of iraq vets so much. It's heartbreaking. I get it. Seriously underrated movie. Good noise.

The sandbox is no joke. I appreciate the Viet Vets. They didn't ask for it, and still pushed through. Some reception they received when they returned. Same goes for the Korean Vets.

The double meaning of what Tommy says to Joe - it absolutely breaks your heart.
The acting in this film is up there with the best I've ever seen. The sense of numbness in Tommy is palpable. His eyes alone tell you he's become lost and can't be found and that is why he had to 'move on'.

Now these feelings that resonate with the inner you can only be found in some movies, its truly very hard to create such a powerful scene full of remorse and a bit of guilt while having cold blooded killers as characters. Although the movie doesn’t show the past, the devastating wars between bale and wess studi the movie helps you imagine those brutal moments with words full of sorrow .Its not just shown in this one scene its shown in multiple scenes and the whole movie is filled with these beautiful scenes every scene stands out the most and gives you a better perspective over the past god its a great movie.

Tommy, oh Tommy. My heart went out to you in this film. From the moment early on in this film, you mentioned to Joe you were not fit for duty as they said you had "the melancholia", I watched your character intently. I've struggled with it, too. And then this scene and the following scene made the tears spill from my own eyes, especially when you say "I don't feel anything." It's like that. The numbness overtakes you. It's real.

His breaking point was when the prisoner started making blocker feel guilty by bringing up the horrendous things they’ve done in the war , I believe tommy just felt that everything up to that point in his life became meaningless so the only good thing he can have was the closure of seeking forgiveness but also mercy from the natives especially the chief. Man this movie was heartbreaking and intense.

Been Across the pond multiples times to Iraq/Afghan. Now I’m retired and at the point where I’ve officially lost more friends after the wars than during them. I’ve watched this scene over and over and over. Sometimes it’s the thing we say, and sometimes it’s the things we don’t say. This scene says it all.

This scene got to me. People always talk about the lasting pain of trauma, but rarely talk about the numbness. I remember what it was like to be so tired and spent you felt nothing at all anymore. You can’t sleep, food loses its taste, and you’re tired, but not in the saddle.

As a Grown man, and a U.S. Army Veteran... I must admit, this Movie, and this scene brought me to tears.
Esau/Edom has always considered them, Savages When it has always been The U.S. Government, that has been The Savages.
Until you've served, and been out in Battle, and you see What these Government is Capable of...you will never Comprehend what is going on.
"You are a pale face/a ghost who speaks in forks tongue/snake tongue... You speak in Mendacites.
You say one thing, but do another..
That is how the Apache/Comanche thought of Whiteman.
