What a good topic for a video Bianca. As you mentioned it isnt covered enough. Its pretty rare to see a post that actually talks about the different types of fabric and when they should be used, which is a beginner question that comes up again and again. I think no matter how advanced you become you can still make errors with fabric choice, weve all been there Im sure. A swatch service is a great idea if you rely on shopping online for fabrics in particular.

You are totally right about it coming up over and over again! Even for me, who has been sewing for years, can get TORE UP thinking of the options and not knowing where to start. So it's back to basics for me when I pull out the swatch book-- nothing like fabric at your fingertips to get a gauge of where to start looking.
And you're right about the swatch service! It might seem like an unnecessary expense, but if you're brand new to sewing or are in a fabric-rut, it's a good place to start!

I've been sewing for 2 years now and I'm still learning what kinds of fabrics work for which garments! Thanks for the help! 💜

This is perfect - I think this solves my problem of not knowing what fabric to select for the garment I want to sew. This was never addressed when I was taught!

Thanks for this, though I wish you posted this a few months ago! You can't believe how many times I have to google "best fabrics for x" no matter how long I've been sewing!
I love your swatch book, btw!

I def want to do a series of "Best Fabrics For X"-- and then the different garments from there because you're right-- it can be craziness trying to get it sorted out sometimes!

That’s so right! I’ve just made an experimental self drafted skirt from a donated wool/poly blend. I added flare all round ensuring it is balanced on the pattern, but It just doesn’t quite hang right, too much at the side seams, so it’s the wrong combination. Cost me nothing, so nothing lost, it is wearable, but next time I’ll be paying closer attention and will remember this video.

So glad the video was helpful!
I've totally picked the wrong fabric for projects DOZENS of times. And even with years of experience, it still happens from time to time 😰!!! (For me, it's continuously picking fabrics where my cat's hairs get stuck to like a magnet haha!)
But the drape of fabric can tooootally ruin your favorite garment so I understand!

Hey Bianca, so good to see a video from you. Congratulations again on your engagement💍😊. You are so right about fabric for projects. I've been learning that more and more this year. Especially now that I'm spending more time on fit, I want good fabric.

And yes- spending a couple dollars more a yard 100% makes a difference! I'm all for saving a buck here and there, no doubt, but I think selecting the best fabric you can for your dollar, is always the better option!

Ohh...matching fabric and pattern is the single most difficult challenge for me when it comes to sewing...even with years of experience. And I’m not even talking online shopping here.
I just have a beautiful dark jersey with sprinklings of flowers on it draped on my dressform...I know I want to make a long, romantic-elegant dress from it. I spent an hour this morning going through my 50+ Burda magazines and I just can’t find the right pattern. Nothing seems to fit perfectly...sigh. And it’s like that all the time. Either I don’t find the right match to begin with, or it doesn’t turn out the way I imagined it. Drives me crazy.
I very much agree on the necessity of spending the money on quality fabric, btw...really nice fabric and buttons and stuff is what makes a garment look high end when you’re done. And what’s the point on sewing something, that looks like fast fashion or *whispers* homemade? Well, unless one has major fitting issues with regular clothes, of course. But otherwise the time and effort just isn’t worth it.

Thanks so much for your comment, Rara!
I definitely relate to trying to match fabric to a pattern. At this point in my sewing life, I tend to pick an event, and then just sew towards it, rather than starting from "I want to use this fabric" or "I want to use this pattern." I've had too many instances of them just not coming together that it's easier for me to work more from a place of a theme and then swirl my imagination around it!
And as for quality materials: 100%!!! After I decided to start investing in my craft's raw materials, everything improved.
I hope you find a good use of your dark jersey fabric!

Hello, Maureen! The fabric was actually bought at Joann's, on sale (haha!) A yummy thick double knit with delicious texture. The pattern is the Jennifer Lauren Handmade Gable Top which I made as a tutorial a while back: th-cam.com/video/_2_zSb6jK0I/w-d-xo.html

This is great information but in some of our home towns our only options are JoAnn orHobby Lobby. Many of those employees know so much less that I do - not helpful. Swatches may not be helpful for us 😞

    • @VintageonTap
      @VintageonTap  5 ปีที่แล้ว

I totally understand about situations where the employee might not be the most helpful 😥 With situations like that, your cell phone camera is your best friend!
Anytime you go shopping in places like that, snap a photo of the end of the fabric bolt (with all the fabric details) of fabric you buy. When you get home, you can copy that into your swatch book and tape in a little square of that fabric. Over time, your collection grows, and you won't have to rely on employees who may not have that much background in sewing! This is how I started working on my book way way wayyyyy back.
      Hope this helps!

I used to work in one of these stores. Usually a few employees will know a lot about the fabrics - but they may not be working when you go in. You can ask "who's your clothing fabric expert, and when are they working?"
In the store I worked at, I was the Yarn Lady as well as a clothing fabric expert.

I am having an awful time with this. I just make a few of skirts. Some of them worked out most didn't. I made a gaberdine skirt that just looked wonky, even with using a clapper. I guess I am buying cheaply made fabric.

Is it really necessary to make a 'no judgment' disclaimer in a sewing video? How awful people have become that one needs that nowadays?
