  • One of the most common sewing questions we are asked is 'how do I choose the right fabric for my dressmaking or sewing project?' This isn't only limited to beginners learning to sew either. Often we hear that people who have been sewing for years are sticking to the same types of fabric because they're scared to try something new. In this video we'll run through some general pointers and things to think about when choosing a dressmaking fabric, what information the pattern packet gives you, information on stretch fabrics such as jersey or knits, common types of dressmaking fabrics: their potential uses, qualities and how easy they are to sew then we'll round up with some final words of wisdom. As part of this we'll show you some of the garments we've sewn in the various different fabrics and you can find all of these on our blog, we've included the links below. We've also included a link to the blog article, which summarises all of this information in written format.

    What a wonderful and comprehensive video. I have a feeling this one will be popular going forward, as you address classic fabrics but from a contemporary point of view. I also appreciated your honest but encouraging advice regarding fabrics that require a little more consideration before during and after sewing. TFS

    Really helpful. I'm still quite new to sewing, and this was a very useful summary. Couldn't agree more with your suggestions to just give it a go - and to use a walking foot on temperamental fabrics - just tried mine out on fleece and it was amazing!

    I’m really struggling to find 4 way stretch quality Ponte , do you store any ?

    • @SewEssential
      @SewEssential  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah that's so kind of you, thank you so much. You could try our Roanne fabric by John Kaldor, which has stretch in both directions. It is described as a ponte, although it isn't as stable and weighty as some pontes. If you would like a sample you can email us at sales@sewessential.co.uk here is a link to the product www.sewessential.co.uk/fabrics/dressmaking-fabrics/plain-stretch-jersey-fabrics/plain-medium-weight-viscose-nylon-jersey

    • @martinlund7790
      @martinlund7790 ปีที่แล้ว

      Fabric only stretch’s 2 ways. 4 way is counted up and down as 1 and 2 and across as 3 and 4. Fabric tagged 4 way will have equal amount of stretch both ways and 2 way has more stretch in one direction than the other. I leave out bias as even woven stretches when bias cut..

    Hi Lucy
    I have just stumbled upon your videos and just want to let you know that you are AMAZING.You explain in simple English. I have mostly listened to the American videos and it's just lovely to listen to someone normal from UK. I am so hooked to your videos now and busy going through all your videos. I'm hoping to buy an upgrade on my sewing machine and looking at a Jenome Atelier 7 and hoping to invest in a good overlocker. Just waiting for lockdown to be lifted. I'm currently confused between a Janone and a Juki of the same model type and really struggling to make up my mind and as well as with an overlocker. I want a good overlocker. Not a lower end but also not a difficult one as I too am struggling with the threading of overlockers. I hope that you can help

    If you're a linen fan but hate the wrinkles, try a linen blend. I'm wearing my new linen rayon blouse I just made and it is so comfortable, moisture wicking, light and airy, yet does not look rumpled at all. The rayon does not have that polyester feel either. I've had it on all day and it's now sundown. Hurrah for Linen.

    Interesting. That’s a good selection and advice, especially the advice about the ponte & scuba.
    I’m getting twitchy about making a lightweight suedette into a Mimi G biker style jacket. Even with interlining, I don’t feel it’s going to be a good make. One to stick back in the stash imo.

    What did you use to hold the threads on the pegboard? 😃 😃 😃
    Are they on a thread rack or hung up separately, I can't really tell on my phone. 😃 😃 😃
    THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR ALL YOUR HELP! 😃 😃 😃

    • @darknessfierce4209
      @darknessfierce4209 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can buy pegboard hooks in different lengths, beware pegboard hooks can have a rounded end or a straight end
      It matters because it’s harder to get the thread on and off sometimes a fit has a rounded bulb on the end

    Lucy thx so much for this informative vid. So helpful. I a was gifted some fabric from a very wonderful lady recently. Due to eye prblms mostly she is just not able to sew anymore. These fabrics are high quality. There is a velvet included. It's is a burnt rust color and I just love it. My problem is that I don't know what it's made of and, of course, I have no care instructions. Is there a method of figuring out the content? Usually if I have a piece of fabric I'm unsure of I just throw it in the washer and dryer to see what happens. But there is no way I want to take a risk with this fabric. What can I do?

    • @SewEssential
      @SewEssential  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Barbara, wow these fabrics sound amazing! With regards to the velvet I would suggest either cutting a small square piece and washing it to see what results you get, measuring it beforehand. If you aren't happy with the results or don't want to try this I would have it dry cleaned. I hope you manage to get started on these treasures!

      @@SewEssential thx so much! Why didn't I think of that! I've already made a pencil skirt from a piece of suiting that wasn't large enough for a blazer. Then I used the pale blue crepe de chine for a pussy bow blouse. So pretty. The suiting is charcoal with just the smallest line if blue and they look amazing together. Can't wait to show Rachel how I've used these pieces!
