Well done, Ethan!! Great to meet you at ICAST. Congrats on the little one and thanks for the great review on the Trout-Panfish series. Hope you get some more time on the water with it soon!
Got this rod a year back. One of the best rods I've owned. Pulled a bass that went into weeds bending the rod past the point most rods would break after a few minutes. Got the bass and my lure back. Its great at casting light lure far and accurate as hell.
Thanks David! Yeah it’s truly a blessing to get out and fish. Makes me miss the little guy though. Gonna be tough to get out for very long in the near term 🤠 totally fine with it!
I found your channel a couple of weeks ago and have been happy with what I’ve seen. I actually bought this rod today because of this video. Thanks for the info and reviews. Next will have to be some of your jigs.
Congrats on the little one! I hope his mom is doing well too. TFO makes an awesome product, we own three of their fly rods. In my opinion, TFO and ECHO build the best value fly rods on the market. I have no experience with their conventional equipment, but I know it'll be excellent.
Thanks for the review because it steered me to the TFO's which I never would have considered before. I bought this in the ultralight and the light and they are the bomb! They are my go to rods for light lures. Throwing 4" senkos on the light, I've boated a 4 lb largemouth, 19" smallie and 13 lb carp. Keep up the good work.
Just ordered my TPS 601-2. Going to pair it with the Daiwa Legalis LT 1000 for chasing stream trout. Thanks for all the equipment review vids. You were a great resource for helping me pick out my little rig.
Man I’m so glad I found you’re channel. I found it though Creek Fishing Adventures channel and combined y’all cover everything I like to do, creek fishing with an ultra light. Don’t get me wrong I like to rig up a yum dinger on my medium rod and target some big bass too but ultralight is what I enjoy most. I got into ultra light kind of by accident. I found a zebco micro spinning combo, there no telling how old the thing was. The pole ended up breaking pretty quick so I ended up pairing the reel with some 4# trilene smooth cast mono and one of these Shakespeare micros. I absolutely love this combo, my favorite creek rod for sure. I plan on replacing the reel with a Lews Light Speed reel eventually but this is doing me for now. The gills in the creeks where I live honestly aren’t much of a challenge with red worms they tear them up so I have gotten to where I am lure fishing for them. There isn’t a lot of options out there for ultralight tackle so I think you found a great niche with your company. I just got a panfish magnet set and have started using that. I will be purchasing some of your tackle soon. A starter kit with some of your lures, jigs and floats would be a great idea. Sorry for the novel but you definitely earned a new subscriber. Thanks!
Heck yeah! Thank you so much for coming by and watching the videos. Glad you enjoy both John & I's content. He is a really nice guy! And thank you for the support of Mule and the feedback. Definitely a great idea to get a starter kit going at some point :)
@@FishAnything I just started your series on the hunt for a 10” blue Gill. Really enjoying that series. I see me binging that series 😂really cool channel and needed! Not many people have channels that concentrate on ultralight and panfish.
There are rods that are just 'nice to fish with' like putting on a comfortable pair of pants. Looked good. Congratulations to you and your good lady and good health to the family
ANOTHER ONE? Ethan you have more ultralight rods then the local Dunhams near me. Congrats on becoming a new father best wishes to you and your wife with baby Charlie.
Been wanting one of these for a while. Ended up getting a St. Croix panfish last time I was in the market (which is also a great UL rod, BTW), but finally got one of these TFO ULs on sale this week. Can’t wait to try it!
A great on-the-water review of a great rod. I also own the 6' version but in a 1 piece and I love mine. Some nice catches, both from the shore and the kayak. Glad you got out after a 2 week hiatus and congrats again on your new baby boy. Now get back to diaper duty 🤣
The diaper duty never stops. Or should I say diaper doody 🤪 But for real this rod is solid. I have liked all of the rods I’ve reviewed for different reasons but this one is definitely towards the top of the list.
I have been using this rod for like 16 months already. It is great. Perch and trout are amazing on it, also some pikes are not that hard on it. And I put shimano sahara 2000s on it and its just great
Super stoked you got the TFO!! HANDS DOWN MY FAVORITE RODS! The 6' is my favorite jigging rod too! I hope you get more opportunities to enjoy it. Fish on
One thing that I could recommend is higher seat in your kayak. It will definitely help you with awkward position when casring. Awesome channel mate 💪🏼🎣👍🏼
Because if your videos I’ve bought an ultra light combo took my Kayak to the small creek in Houston Texas and I’m slamming 3 pound blue catfish, sweet channel catfish, spotted bass, large mouth bass and crappie. All on a float rig with a small piece of gulp night crawler on a little jig head.
Awesome. Glad you picked it up. I didn’t suggest it but I’m glad others did. I have the 6’6 version and it’s worth every penny. It’s my first nicer ultralight but glad it stacks up nicely with the ones you haves purchased. Caught my biggest bluegill on it the other day (9.5”) and it was a blast!
The onlineoutdoorsdad casting an blasting in the Kanoe bringing great videos and product’s to the table like a onlineoutdoorsboss! I’m pretty busy most of the time but I try and catch your content when I can, good stuff as usual bro!
Congratulations Ethan! I’ve always loved temple fork fly rods. So the micro series from them should be great also. Look forward to when you can get out on the water.
Congrats on the little one Ethan. I got 5 or 6 on a donkey tail jr in about an hour the other day. I just put it right back in the clam shell to use another day. Why throw out a perfectly good lure.
Love my TFO ultralight! Have it paired with a cadence 500 series. Already caught over 100+ fish on it, and it’s one of the best ultralights I’ve ever owned. Throw a 1/32 ounce mule jig with no problems.
Another great ul rod review. I wanna upgrade my team diawa 4’6” ul 1988/89 spinning rod. Snd my gloomis gl2 5’ is great too. But I think I need a 6’ to 6’10” ul/light rod. My gloomis has cork handle old school style. I use Shimano 500 series reels with the best drag systems I can find. The stratic c14 1000 is also wonderful and light enough to throw on any ul rod imo. And we used to use ice fishing rods when we were in elementary school. The local fishing shop bobs bait shop in Poway, CA was amazing and opened a new world of knowledge and learning. The start up set ups for us kids were ice fishing rods from 3’ bright orange Kencore lids with $15/20 Shimano or diawa urls. 3’-4’5” kencore ice fishing rods worked great for catching stock trout with inflated night crawlers or power bait with a small split shot. Or for bluegill. And for free lining mini tube plastics for bass n bluegill in crystal clear waters with crazy heavy pressure. The review reminded me of lake Hodges vibes. The diawa ul rod review was totally nerded out too. I loved it
I was looking for a new ultralight to replace the one I lost earlier this year. Dumped the yak. It was at that point I realized pole leashes are a good idea 😆 Anyway, after watching this video I ordered the 6’6” model. Should have it before my float next weekend. Hoping to wear the smallmouth out. 👍 Thanks!
If someone wants one ultralight for numerous fishing types, this would be the one I’d suggest. Feels perfect for trout but still maintains that lighter panfish offering. Huge fan of this setup!
Thank for all your ultralight rod and reel reviews, I feel your strong feeling for the TFO trout/panfish rod with the Diawa Revros LT 1000 reel has pointed me in the right direction for my first ultralight outfit. If you read this please give me some suggestions on line and bait. Thanks and I look forward to all your you tube videos.
Thank you John! That setup will do you quite well! I would slap some Daiwa J Braid X8 Grand in 6lb test on there and tie it to a 4lb co polymer leader. I like Trilene Sensation or Yo Zuri Hybrid. Otherwise, you can also do straight 2lb or 4lb copolymer and that works well too. For baits, you will want small jigs/plastics. I am biased but Mule Fishing is my baby so I would recommend that :) otherwise Bobby Garland, Gulp, etc. Then I would get some floats for slip float rigs, drop shot weights and hooks, and a few small jerkbaits and spoons. That will cover down on 99% of ultralight fishing!
Congrats on the little one. Future fishing buddy. Just bought an ultralight rig and placed an order for some mule jigs and donkey tails. Looking to get some juniors when they’re back in stock. Love the mule jig profile and small sizes you make available, hard to find good ones. Thanks for the videos and excited to try the products.
Congrats on the Baby Charles!! Also I got a light `rod for you to use 5'6 Berkley cherrywood light action rod. I have mine and I love it! Also try some 1.5 inch tubes if you can or some itty bit swimr lures on video.
Waiting to see if UL fishing works at night. So rare to see good quality UL fishing specially at night. Safe fishing, tight lines and congrats on the baby :)
Shoot, sportsman's warehouse has a great deal on these rods right now but they are listed as extra fast instead of just fast... Still worth it in your opinion?
@@FishAnything I did and you were right, it's just a fast. I figured something was up when I saw nothing about an ultra fast action on the TFO website. Heck of a deal for $65!
@@FishAnything just got them the other day along with your message ! You're awesome man and I love supporting great people and products ! They worked so well perfect hook size and the keeper is a game changer, used the same bait all day with no issues and cause a ton of fish thank you so much Ethan !
I am probably going to film a video talking about all of them later this fall as the weather gets colder. Those are two of my favorites... If you prefer a faster tip, go with the 13. If you want something with a slightly softer tip that may be better for Crappie/Trout, go TFO. Either way, you can't go wrong!
@@FishAnything I 100% agree. (Amazon has them for about $15ish most of the time). I don't think there is a better UL rod at that price point. I prefer their light (which feels like a UL to me. Their UL rod doesn't have enough backbone imo, but their light is spot on. That said, I ordered a TFO 6'6" and can't wait to use it. I had a daiwa presso ul that I loved but it's at the bottom of Nolin lake😭. The presso can't be found anywhere right now. I've heard the TFO is very similar. If so, I'll love it.
These are mostly available overseas sadly, so aliexpress would be your best bet. That said, I believe there is a Shakespeare micro series available for spin cast. You can simply buy the combo and give the spincast reel away. Still very affordable.
I just purchased a 6'6" L defy silver, and i love it. Im gonna be picking up a UL next and was wondering if you think the tfo is $35 better than the defy silver? I was able to put my hands on the tfo, and it did feel really nice in the hand, i just dont know if I need to spend the extra money. What do you think?
Depends on what you intend to use it for. If you primarily fish with jigs, I would say the Defy Silver is just as good. If you want a bit more versatility, I think the TFO is a superior rod. I love them both!
Never used the Maverick but I love my Sierra! The TFO is a bit more versatile but the Dobyns is a higher quality stick which is better for jig fishing.
I’ve had a revros lt 1000 reel for a while now but I don’t use it because the drag feels…well it feels like the drag discs are warped almost. It’s not a smooth drag. Almost sticky feeling. My regal 2000 feels super smooth. Have you had problems with smaller 1000 sized reels and their drags? Or maybe know what I could do to fix that
Dang I’m sad to hear that! I have never had drag issues with this reel but it is sub $50 so I’m sure the parts can get gunked up or damaged easy. Not sure what to do in that situation but I’d probably take the reel apart and clean it good
Maybe consider replacing the drag discs with carbon fiber discs? I have the legalis 2500(4 of them) that I got for about $55 reach. I love them. I also have the 2500 exceler and love it too. I only got it because Amazon has it on sale for less than the legalis. They are very about casting and reeling reels. I don't have issue with the drag except it would be nice if it was a just little bit louder. Still amazing reels for the price.
@@FishAnything I think the stouter feel is definately opposite of the okuma celio which is too noodly. Its too stout for me too. I tried the phenix ultra light, and i liked it, but didn't like the reel seat. Im waiting on that review! ;]
What size do you recommend for this rod? 1 or 2 piece? And also is this rod good for trout of all sizes, or the smaller stuff? Really love your videos.
I would definitely go 1pc if you can, but if you need some portability, a 2pc will be fine too. And yeah this rod should do well with most trout. If you have giants in your area, you may want to upsize a bit, but it will handle most normal sized trout just fine.
I personally think the semi-soft tip makes it a really solid rod for various species. Probably will be dynamite for trout fishing. If you want a bit stouter rod, go with the 13 fishing defy silver!
@@FishAnything I just picked up a Moonshine ultralight that Ive been loving, you should check them out if you want a really durable ultralight. I find that the TFO tip dent allow me to cast super light lures since there's a lot of whip to the rod, still a great set up though!
6' model is amazing UL rod. 6'6" model is a good rod, but think it is a little stiff ( hot too bad though) 7' model is not an UL rod at all heavy rod that would be a great medium action rod 8lb - 10 lb test medium size reel
74 fish on the black donkey tail jr. Largemouth, Smallmouth, Rock bass, Bluegill, Pike. I’ve recently thought about bringing her outta retirement and try to get over 100 🤷🏻♂️
I don't like the back how the cork is in new poles at all don't feel good. I like the but of the rod I can grab and use it right and not keep my head in one spot. Do like the shorter the better pole's the one I like and softer the best for me for sure.
It is all relative. Definitely some good rods out there for a lower price but after comparing several, I feel the TFO is about as good as you can get for that price.
Unfortunately the guides on these rods are inserts and in less then 3 months of avid trout fishing both my 6’ and 7’ rod guides have deep line grooves from a basic 2lb monofilament. I sent pictures to the warranty department and the rods will be replaced with new ones but are back ordered for 1-2 months. Beware
I tend to disagree on this one. I feel the TFO is a standard fast, whereas the Dobyns or other solid tipped rods are more like an extra fast. No matter what, I think the reality is that there is a ton of variation across brands in what they classify as "fast"
Not sure I agree with that. I don't notice a huge difference on most high quality rods if they are 1 or 2 piece. The cheap ones often come apart or get crooked though so I can understand why they are annoying.
Well done, Ethan!! Great to meet you at ICAST. Congrats on the little one and thanks for the great review on the Trout-Panfish series. Hope you get some more time on the water with it soon!

I have been using those for about two years now and really enjoy them. I caught a 6.15 bass on a 1/32 jig with that rod.

What are your thoughts on 1 pc vs 2 pc rods? Trying to decide which to buy for this specific rod.
I personally don’t see a problem with 2pc. For my own preferences, I go with 1pc if I have space for it but grab a 2pc if I want more portability.
Shoot, sportsman's warehouse has a great deal on these rods right now but they are listed as extra fast instead of just fast... Still worth it in your opinion?
Yeah I am sure the listing is inaccurate. I would go for it!
@@FishAnything I did and you were right, it's just a fast. I figured something was up when I saw nothing about an ultra fast action on the TFO website. Heck of a deal for $65!
You're a champion.
Lol thanks Ben!
Congratulations my man !🤎 You have really helped me improve as a panfish angler, just ordered the mule jig super excited for it!
Awesome! Truly appreciate the kind words and support! Can’t wait to hear how they work for you 🤠🕺🏼
@@FishAnything just got them the other day along with your message ! You're awesome man and I love supporting great people and products !
They worked so well perfect hook size and the keeper is a game changer, used the same bait all day with no issues and cause a ton of fish thank you so much Ethan !
What did you use to seal the cork? Would be good to make a video on how to do a "sealant" on cork ...
I found a basic “cork sealer” product on Amazon for like $8. It is made exactly for this.
Impressed with my TFO
Paired with Shimono Vanford 500
That sounds like a stellar setup!
Have you tried the tfo trout panfish 2? It’s a bit more money, $129 and wonder if it’s worth the money.
I heard it’s the same rod with new aesthetics so I haven’t felt a need to buy it yet
Can you share what jig box you use? Looks perfect for the mule jigs. Nice and compact.
It’s honestly just a cheap fly box from Cabelas! Works pretty nicely 🤠
Have you tried an abu garcia salty stage UL? I've just gotten one and I love it
Never tried it but I will have to look into it. Thank you!
I'm really liking these review videos. I can't wait for the comparison video. I'm looking at this TFO and the 13 Fishing Defy, which would recommend?
I am probably going to film a video talking about all of them later this fall as the weather gets colder.
Those are two of my favorites... If you prefer a faster tip, go with the 13. If you want something with a slightly softer tip that may be better for Crappie/Trout, go TFO. Either way, you can't go wrong!
@@FishAnything reminder for this video! 😇
Awesomeness love the rod you got us hooked on the ultra lights what's good budget 20 dollar ultra light rods to purchase
Heck yeah! For $20 you gotta go shakespeare micro series 🤠
If so, I'll love it.
great video quick question i am looking for an ultra-light casting rod do you happen to know of any
These are mostly available overseas sadly, so aliexpress would be your best bet.
Which one you like better. TFO 6'6, dobyns maverick 6' or dobyns sierra 6'2, 6'7
Never used the Maverick but I love my Sierra! The TFO is a bit more versatile but the Dobyns is a higher quality stick which is better for jig fishing.
Thanks Ethan!!!
Thank you for the support James 🧡
What lure were you using at the start of the video?
Yo zuri snap bean
Do you think this could handle up to 1/4oz? I really like the versatility but still like throwing my 1/4oz Joes Flies
I think that’s definitely the heaviest I would go but it can handle it.
I really want to try some of your baits mr Ethan!
Hope you do! I am very happy with how they have turned out!
What type of sealer do you use on your cork?
I just found some cheap on Amazon. Little bottle of what looks like elmers glue. Works just fine!
CONGRATS! I bet you can’t wait to have him fish with you
Which one do you like more the st croix or this rod?
This rod beats the st croix in my eyes! And thank you I can’t wait to get him out when he’s old enough 🧡🧡🧡
With being able to get the st croix panfish for around $120 how does this stack up against it?
I like it better personally!
Have you tried the Kuying Teton UL? It’s around the same price range. Would love to hear your thoughts
Haven't tried it because I don't really mess with AliExpress however I will have to check it out!
Tfo UL Vs dobyns Sierra trout rod. Which one did you like more?
Dobyns is more my style for sure but it’s not as versatile. Stouter feel to it so it doesn’t cast small lures as far. Both are great!
@@FishAnything I think the stouter feel is definately opposite of the okuma celio which is too noodly. Its too stout for me too. I tried the phenix ultra light, and i liked it, but didn't like the reel seat. Im waiting on that review! ;]
Does it have a made in China sticker on it by any chance?
I don't have the sticker anymore. I believe mine was likely made in Korea before they changed production countries.
Love the video
Thank you! 🤠💚
Kayak/canoe is exactly what I need.
It definitely helps!
Hey there just wanted to check and see which size this pole was
6' ultralight fast action!
Ive used on of those for a few years, great rod but I wish the tip wasn't as soft you could actually cast a bit better.
I think the 6' is amazing too. Haven't tried the 6'6 but I also have the 7' stick and I feel it is a good Crappie setup.
74 fish on the black donkey tail jr.
Largemouth, Smallmouth, Rock bass, Bluegill, Pike. I’ve recently thought about bringing her outta retirement and try to get over 100 🤷🏻♂️
THAT IS WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
For all the rods you have and keep buying you could of got a nice Loomis. 😉 Keep the TFO though. 😊
Haha yeah maybe one of these days I will go with a super high end model.
@@FishAnything IMX or even better GLX. Sell all the other stuff.
tryout the cadence CR5 ultralight rod next, another budget rod
I’ll have to check it out, thank you!
Wish the uk sold this rod grrrrr
Another UL rod? Don’t tell Mrs. Onlineoutdoorsman 🤫
She knows lol I just can’t question her purchase decisions and we’re good 🤠
I don't like the back how the cork is in new poles at all don't feel good. I like the but of the rod I can grab and use it right and not keep my head in one spot. Do like the shorter the better pole's the one I like and softer the best for me for sure.
👍
Thanks Frank!

🤠👊🏽💚
I find it odd that you tend to fish so close to shore while you're out paddling. You may want to get yourself a FishFinder when you get the capital.
I fish offshore in my other kayak more because I do have a graph! Just not in the simplistic canoe rig 🤠
These ultralights are a little bit on the pricier side.
Beware
At least they are standing behind their product and replacing them... It's a bummer they're back ordered though.
Not bad rod but definitely not fast action. It's extra fast
I tend to disagree on this one. I feel the TFO is a standard fast, whereas the Dobyns or other solid tipped rods are more like an extra fast.
No matter what, I think the reality is that there is a ton of variation across brands in what they classify as "fast"
Funny, it’s a canoe not a kayak… 😂
Yes it sure is, but I am so used to saying kayak that I goofed up!
Hi daddy
Lol 😂
Two piece rods are an abomination 😮😮😮!!!
Not sure I agree with that. I don't notice a huge difference on most high quality rods if they are 1 or 2 piece. The cheap ones often come apart or get crooked though so I can understand why they are annoying.
I can't stand that radio voice.
Thanks for the feedback! But to be honest, I won’t change my voice because it’s what God blessed me with 🧡 tight lines my friend 🤠
