- The Moonshine Rambler ultralight rod! I have been meaning to try this for some time now and I finally made it happen. Big shoutout to one of my best friends in the world (Dan) for sending this to me. Also thanks to my good buddy Dave for taking me out on the boat. Always a blast fishing with Dave!

Overall, this rod was clearly a high quality piece of equipment. It was also beautiful - probably the coolest looking ultralight rod I have used yet. In this video, I put it to use on several small bass and a couple bluegill. After testing numerous lures, it was pretty clear to me that this rod has a bit more moderate action than expected. Not necessarily a bad thing, but it does impact what I would use it for. I think it will be a solid stick for trout fishing and some crappie applications.

Oh, and I want to, from the bottom to the top of my heart, say THANK YOU for re kindling my passion for UL fishing. I have had so much more fun fishing since i started following you. Getting excited over a 3-4" fish makes me feel like a kid agian, and I think we all need that in our lives every once in awhile. You have made a difference in my life, and I thank you for that. You are truly appriciated by your followers. Tight lines my friend.
Wow, that means the world to me, Anthony. Thank you so dang much for taking the time to write this. Keep them lines tight!
Thanks for doing this video, Ethan! I was one of the people that was interested in this rod and recommended it to you. After seeing this, kinda on the fence about buying it now as I like the stouter rods as well but it isn’t out of the question for me yet!
Right on! Yeah, for that price, I would probably go the route of Dobyns Sierra or Daiwa Kage!
That is an absolutely gorgeous rod. I prefer solid rear grips but that is maybe the best looking split grip I have seen.
@Mike B i agree on the solid grips but have found a couple good split grip rods also
It is definitely the coolest looking rod I have, but I can't say it is my favorite from a performance standpoint.
Thats a beauty of a rod. Love the color of the rod itself and the two tone cork is incredible.
It is definitely pretty!
Loving these rod reviews. I’m in the market for a couple ultralights for my wife and I. Keep em’ coming!🙌
More to come!! Thanks Joe :)
I have a Moknshine fly rod and love it. They make nice stuff!
No doubt it is high quality. Not quite what I prefer but would be good for certain fishing styles.
Id love to see more videos on this rod! Great video
I still have it so maybe I will try to get it out again this spring. Thanks Bert!
Good time right there!!
Let's go again!
Really enjoyed the video I have also been on a giant ultralight kick the last two weeks it has been awesome thank you for posting up these great videos
Thank you LBF! :)
Sorry I forgot to say another excellent review and as someone who really enjoys ultralight/light powered fishing your series of rod reviews have been awesome.
:) thank youuuuuu
Thanks I’ve been getting into ultralight fishing and I have moderate action and its been hard to get use to. I’ll look for the different types of baits
Yeahhhh moderate with ultralight is just tough. It makes it so dang hard to feel a bite properly with true ultralight jigs. I am FAST or BUST personally.
Caught my first Texas Chichlid on the pasture fire donkey tail jr a few days ago! Thanks again!
THAT IS SO COOL!!!
Beautiful looking stick, too bad it is way out of my budget. Maybe one day. Tightlines friend. Thank you for showing this to us. God bless.
You can get rods that do just as good for less. No worries :)
@@FishAnything Yeah, but a nice dream is a nice goal.
God, Nice your new Rod brother !
Ultralight 4life 💥🎣
Tight lines :)
Wow yeah that’s a beauty! Nice vid
Thanks! Definitely a pretty rod :)
I have the medium light one and its my go to bass rod, ive had it for years and its amazing.
Would you say the medium light is more of a fast action than this ultralight? I’ve been looking at getting that one as well as the ultralight
@@panfishfanatic1055 The medium light is definitely a fast action, its much better than the ultralight. In fact, I may just skip the ultralight as there are better ones for cheaper such as the diawa presso. But the medium light is very good.
@@Evenaardez thanks for the reply. Definitely going to get the medium light now!
Good to know! I definitely think they make a high quality product. This ultralight just isn't my favorite personally.
I have all 3 actually. The ML is definitely my favorite of the bunch.
Love this rod
It is a cool rod for sure.
Those microwave guides definitely work well with the right line. I switched to a rambler after using a different rod for a while and definitely threw straight into a tree across the creek.
It’s not a huge difference but it’s there lol
Good to know! Thanks for adding this note 🤠👊🏽
How is the rod holding up? Would you recommend it?
You should check out the phenix ul rods, they have a hefty price tag but are really built to last and have a great warranty
I have been contemplating getting one for a long time. Maybe someday!
The rambler with a Nasci would look sweet - kinda like the aesthetic that the iwame fisherman of northern Japan do with handmade ultralights and stellas/exists (except a bit cheaper!)
It would look nice for sure! The Moonshine rod is definitely cool looking, but for the price, I think there are higher performing rods.
now that is like the coolest and awesome
fishing rod and reel combo, for sure it is and there's no question about it. did you get it at Cabela's
Nope my friend Dan sent it to me! Cool rod, but I have others I like better.
Good rod reviews and I probably would pass since I've got a vintage Shimano Stimula 5' split grip and Abu Garcia Gold max ultralight reel w/ 6# braid that has the same feel and action. Very nice looking rod ascetic. Then there's the 6' Bass Pro Bionic Blade light with the vintage Shimano Magnumlite Gtx 1200 I have paired with that and 6# copolymer line. The dream rod for light and ultralight for me. The old rod butt weight system is priceless. Jigs all day and no arm fatigue. Thanks Ethan
Heck yeah Brian! So many good rods out there, so little time to test them all haha
Do you like have a spreadsheet/document anywhere with key take aways from each rod? Could be pretty useful.
Honestly that is a great idea! All I have is the videos but I may have to start doing more written notes on my website.
Still love my dobyns Sierra ultralight , not to say there aren’t other great rods out there.
Dobyns Sierra is still at the top of my list
That is a beauty
Truly is a cool looking rod!
Rain or no rain your fishing that’s a wonderful day 😊
Lots of dinks! No problem for me :)
How does it compare to the TFO I seem to recall you liked? Great review, this may be on my future must have list, right next to the Dobyns Sierra ultralight.
The TFO is a bit faster and less whippy. I prefer it for sure. The Dobyns Sierra is still at the top of my list.
Abu Garcia Eradicator on the wish list? Might be too slow and whippy for you but it's a super ultra light
Honestly this is the first I have ever heard of it. If it is slow and whippy, I will pass haha
Hey Ethan, I’m wondering if you think you might be reviewing the new St.Croix Avid panfish series anytime?
Hmmm I might just have to. My experience with St Croix is that they are high quality but they are bit tip heavy for my style of fishing. I will keep this rod in mind though.
Beautiful rod. I have a moonshine 4wt fly rod for bluegill. However, I'm recently noticing moonshine getting a lot of hate on line...not sure why? Direct marketing...?
Interesting! I haven't noticed... I have no issues with their company.
Thank You for taking off the plastic and barcode.
Lol :)
Nice rod! I was about to pull the trigger on a Dobyns Sierra ultralight. What is your opinion which one is the better choice?
Dobyns by far!
I know this is not at all the topic of this video but, I like the boat. I know its not yours but any chance you know what make/model it is?
what pocket knife is that? the orange one
Buck Knives 112 Slim!
Moonshine vs Dobyns which is better?
Dobyns not even close
My #1 pet peeve with ultralight rods. Widespread false action ratings.
That is why I do these videos ;)
Hey Dave!🙋♂️
Well howdy
Hi both of you :)
Man I’m jealous I want one of them so bad that rod is it better than the daiwa presso ultra light or the st Croix legend elite rod that moonshine rod if it wouldn’t be so flimsy I would buy one but that killed it 😢😢😢
The Legend elite is next level better than this but it is also super pricey. The Daiwa Presso is similar but I think its a little faster so I like it better.
I have seen these rods, definitely agree with you that the ul is a moderate. I imagine It would excel with the treble hook baits and drop shot rigs or other methods where seeing the bite is important.
Also, I have been making some unique hand tied ul jigs I want to send you. How do I get them to you?
Yessir, Peter! And I don't really NEED more gear, but if you really want to, you can send me an email to mulefishingsupplies @ gmail dot com and I will check them out :)
I'm still unconvinced on double butt rods. Can you please explain what you think the advantages are over a single butt rod. Thanks.
There are no advantages really. It's just to make the rod lighter. I do think personally that it won't help with casting.
The only difference is less material/weight. It's more of a cost savings measure by the manufacturer as that 3-5 inches of less handle material adds up over tens of thousands of rods. It's done in part mostly for looks, only expensive rods did this 30 years ago, so most rod makers started to it too and kept doing it because it makes the rods cheaper so more profit.
To me it seems to upset the balance of the rod. Less weight from less materials means the reel seat sits higher on the rod to balance it out. Sure more butt end you can tuck it under your arm or whatever, but unless you've got a mighty big fish on you don't need the extra leverage. As I mainly fish for trout I haven't come across anything big enough to warrant it. I just can't see any advantage in it.
I personally like an old school full rod butt. The split grip is a marketing thing to make rods look "cooler" and weight less. I agree that it tends to only hurt their balance, particularly on longer rods. I am fine with whatever, but I wish more rod companies were willing to go old school and make a nice full grip.
Beautiful rod...had a feeling it wouldn't be a true fast action as most trout oriented companies tend to be more moderate. Probably would still be good for float fishing or spinners
Exactly. I think it would be good for trout fishing but definitely not my favorite for panfish.
Have you ever tried a ACC Crappie Stix rod? Great video!
Still haven't but I intend to try one someday!
@@FishAnything I got 1 the 6.6, it is a very light rod weighs 3.5ozs, & very sensitive!
Grip that looks like wood is called ‘burled wood’.
And now I know!
Ok Ethan, do you think the Kage is a more, or less versital rod? I do like to throw roostertails and mepps, but i always have a mule jig tied on to something. They are close in price, but so different in action. They both look amazing and I really love the cork on the moonshine rod. Im lucky enough to have the Kage at my local mom & pop tackle store and i fell in love with it after watching you fish with it. There is a good chance one of these rods will be under the tree with my name on it this year!😁
Get the Kage. You can make it work with other equipment by adjusting your drag and whatnot. It is a far superior rod.
@@FishAnything Thank you for that advise. Ive been back to the tackle store twice now to hold the kage, and the tfo ul. The kage just feels right in my hand, and pairing it with a vanford should be an absolute dink slayer!!😁
What motor are you guys using?
That, I do not know haha
Nice!
Thanks for watching :)
Bought the UL and L model last year sold the UL model for it was too noodly for me
The L version is perfect though
Oh really? Might have to ask Dan for the Light XD
@@FishAnything yeah boss see if he will let you try it out the tip is soft and sensitive but has some decent backbone, i was loosing trout and small bass left and right with UL. love these rods but still rather use the kuying tetons haha
What brand line were you using?
Only reason I know what line it is is because of Burly Fishings new podcast ‘Aggressively Average Anglers’. Ethan was the first guest on their podcast.
It’s SPRO finesse braid 8x in flash pink.
And I’m pretty sure he is using Trilene Sensation for leader.
@@RoamingWhispers oh nice! thank you (: i've been on the hunt for pink braid that isn't defier d-braid
Shoutout to Jim for nailing it! Spro X Trilene Sensation :)
So it's a Noodle rod?
Definitely not a noodle... But not as fast as I'd like! I have felt much whippier rods
Thanks for reviewing one of these…. I’ll pass on that weird guide… also I’m not impressed with the reel seat, the rod looks great except for those two points
Definitely a high quality rod but I totally agree with both of these pieces of feedback. The microwave guide is a bit silly in my opinion. I am not big on stuff like that though. Call me old fashioned but if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
Just another advertisment of an over priced rod.
Over priced
Probably fair ;)
Moonshine fly rods are pretty heavy and not any more sensitive than anything else in their price range. They are good looking though.
Good to know! They seem like high quality rods, but this wasn't the specs for my style.
What brand/model is your buddy’s boat?
That, I don't know!
