This Advanced Ultralight Technique Will Help You Catch More Fish!

- If you have been following along for a while, you have seen me use this technique several times by now. Whether around overhanging trees, docks, or any other cover which could get in the way of a standard cast, shooting a jig is a must-have technique for anyone who fishes with ultralight a lot. You will often hear people talk about dock-shooting, which I demonstrated in this video, but I have used this casting technique around far more than just docks with success.
While I would classify this technique as "advanced", I definitely want to be clear that it isn't necessarily difficult. Just like anything else, it simply takes practice. With repetition, I think you will find that shooting an ultralight jig into hard-to-reach places becomes pretty easy. I can also tell you with confidence that if you learn how to do this accurately, you will land more fish. You will also likely catch large fish, as that has been my experience. Fish that position deep under cover are not accustomed to seeing fishing lures drop on their nose, because most anglers aren't able to make these casts. The ones that put in the practice and learn to make the cast are rewarded!

That lake is glass. Crazy smooth.
It was a beautiful day for a kayak fishing session :)
I’m 72 and I have never seen this method used !
What a great way to fish around a pier ! 👍
Heck yeah! It is a popular crappie fishing application, but it works for far more than just slabs.
This is a technique a lot of old school fishermen use when fishing really tight streams. My grandpa showed it to me back in the 80s, they called it the slingshot cast. Cool to see it applied on a kayak
Definitely seems to have a few names. It definitely works in numerous applications. Happy to hear this is more of a refresher for you. Tight lines!
Thank you for the informative videos.
I’m learning to dock shoot from you in my kayak. Also went and got the 6ft Duckett Crappie Slayer after your video as well.
Thanks so much for the support!
Just did my first mule fishing order over the weekend so here’s to you!
You rock. Thank you so much!!
just want to say i started fishing a week ago because i stumbled upon your channel. i've been having a blast reeling in those panfish and dinky bass on my ultralight rod!
I absolutely love to hear it! Thanks for the support. Tight lines :)
I used the slingshot method that I learned from watching your videos earlier in the spring for crappie and was very successful. I was bank fishing and had to get under an over hanging tree and between trees that had fallen into the water. There was no way I could make a normal cast so I tried the slingshot method. As I got better I could get closer to the trees that had fallen in the water. Thanks Ethan.
I'm a bank fisherman also can you do this from a standing position or do you have to crouch down to get parallel with water surface?
Same here, I was just going to comment! :) This works great from a bank, under trees, etc. (you know, the trees that ALREADY have line, sinkers, lures dangling from their branches! LOL Plus, you can load the rod better, to get good distance versus trying a short/abbreviated "normal" cast under a tree or brush.
So happy to hear you guys are having success with this technique!!! And Greg, you can do it from a standing position. Just make sure to practice a lot. It is all about the angle of the release.
That's a good technique to learn. And that 2nd catfish was a brute. Thanks for sharing, Ethan
Just wait til the next video lol and thank you!!
It's so cool you covered dock shooting Ethan! When I dock shoot I use 90° line tie jigs. I pinch the jighead with the line tie aimed at the target. I keep the hook perpendicular out away from my fingers. I find that light jigheads with 90° hook ties help me with skipping and then also produce a nice death spiral, if light enough, under docks and cover.
Makes sense! Just like a Mule Jig :)
Ultra light with mule fishing is the only way to go. God bless and tight lines brother!
Thank you Caleb :) Tight lines!
I've been waiting for someone to explain and demonstrate this technique. Very helpful and much appreciated!!
Happy to help! Hope you put it to good use soon :)
Glad to see a new video!
Thank you Megan! More in the works :)
I so needed to see this video. There is a creek system that I like to fish that has a lot of low hanging trees, and I often get hung up in the branches using conventional casting methods to get my lures underneath them. Admittedly, my casting isn't all that accurate anyway...🙃. This technique might help get me more than a few extra bites. Thanks for sharing.
I hope it helps you out! Thanks for watching :)
Love it. Thank you for sharing
Thank you :)
Great video, thank you Ethan!!!
Thank you :)
You are my first to not advise in using shorter rods, that 6.6 helped with Mr. Wiskers big time!
The longer rods work just fine from my kayak. It may be a bit harder on a boat sitting up higher but I think it is most important to find what is comfortable for you personally.
New to your channel but i like what you do . Looking forward to watching more of them .
Thank you very much Garry!
thanks for the lesson.
Happy to help. Tight lines Gary!
You got me all fired up to go fishing right now I know what I’m doing tomorrow going for Croppie and practice shooting a jig
Hope you had fun with it :)
13:00 - Dude, my heart was racing during this whole fight.
Heck yeah! It was a crazy fun fight :)
This video was awesome
Thank you!!!
I'm going creek fishing in the morning and plan on trying out this technique. Here in southern Tennessee there's been a lot of trees down due to all the severe storms and I think shooting jigs under these falls will pay off. Thanks for the tip!
100% this will come in handy for that situation. Thank you Ted - good luck!
Great technique, used this years ago stream fly fishing for trout. Forgot about this method. Thanks for highlighting this effective method with spin gear.
Heck yeah! Tight lines Thomas.
Yes sir Shooter McGavin that's some fun fishing. You found the right dock for tank slabs buddy. Love a good bonus catch of catfish. I learned this technique bank fishing and use it in many situations....creeks, lakes, ponds, wading and boat fishing. For me lighter is better so my baits get more hang time in the zone. Great tutorial Ethan...and fish fighting
Thank you Brian! Shooter McGavin lol
This technique will help with bank fishing. Many times while fishing around a lake you come to spots you know hold fish but there is no room to cast because of surounding brush and low hanging tree branches. This technique allows for shooting the jig straight out.
100% I use it from bank all the time. Great point!
I love fishing🤔
Who doesn't? :)
Just did it today and caught a nice largemouth. Great video!
Love to hear that!!
I will definitely be trying this!
I got so excited when you caught that 2nd catfish. It had that drag screaming!
Hope all is well w you n the fam!
Thank you :) yeah all is going well. The catfish were crazy that day. Just wait until the next video lol
Great idea and nice crappie.
Thank you :)
Looks like a fun day. I enjoy catching the random catfish. Puts light gear to the challenge.
You should do a crappie pursuit series.
Like the bluegill and smallmouth series. That would be entertaining.
A pursuit of a 14 or 15 would be a fun one! Thank you for the idea :)
i actually do this with tenkara and fly fishing. didn't cross my mind to do it with a spinning setup but looks good too.
Give it a try and let me know how it works for you!
It's a very beautiful place where you are so peacefully I will give it a try next time I am out on the lake love to you and yours frome paul in p.a
Thank you Paul :)
Great video! I don’t have lakes around here with docks but I’m feeling like the shooting technique would be great on one lake around here that has a ton of crappie and a ton of overhangs. Also the fact that you were fishing with my favorite bait in my favorite color made it awesome as well; haha!
Great bait!
Heck yeah Gary. I trust the shooting technique will definitely help you around the tree cover. I have used it around just about anything you can think of.
Man you're good at that technique! I'm getting better at it. I set up some soda cans in the backyard for target practice. Nice satisfying pop when the jig hits one lol
Practice makes perfect!
Killing me with the Duckett rod teaser. I've been eyeing those but I haven't found any real reviews. Looking forward to that upcoming video as always. I'll have to try shooting a Mule jig my next time out.
Video will post shortly :) Thank you Dustin!
I definitely have to try this technique out .I trout fish streams that are brush lined and alot of spots are to tight to cast and wading would spook the fish
I guarantee you will put it to use around there.
I finally ordered some Mule Fishing lures and jigs and have been creek fishing with them a few weeks now. Man those are some great ultralight lures. The Burrow Bug and the Horsefly have been doing good but the Donkey Tail Jr has been killing it in the creeks on a 1/64 jig.
I think it’s has even been out fishing the Trout Magnets and that was by far my go to ultralight creek lure up until now. My only regret is I didn’t buy more Donkey Tail Jrs in more colors. But now I have drew wife aggro over the amount I spent on fishing in July so I have to lay low a bit before I can make another order 😂.
Haha love to hear it! Thank you so much for your support - glad the gear is working well for you.
Very nice videos,by any chances can you make a videos on tying a leader for ultralight setup, small diameter lines are harder to tie a leader in my personal experience
I will keep this in mind for future videos. In the mean time, check out the double uni knot. 5 wraps braid, 4 with your leader.
very cool
Try it out and let me know what you think :)
Shooting good for when you are sitting on or in a kayak. Regular skipping is easier on a boat or bank.
Regular skipping is better for heavier weights but anything sub 1/16oz I feel is better for a shooting cast.
Some of the tributaries I fish I have to use the shooting technique all the time. And it’s a skill I don’t forget when I’m using a fly rod either.
Definitely! The fly fishing bow and arrow is a very similar principle!
I'm going to setup obstcles to shoot under and practice with a split-shot in a loop knot.
Practice makes perfect!!
Wow 👏
:) tight lines!
Very enjoyable video! By there way what are you using for audio! Sounds awesome!
Your name is perfect for this video lol and I just use the internal mic on a GoPro.
Great video thanks for the tips question do you know when you will have more Bronco blades in stock man I have been slaying white perch with that thing
I am working on it and should have more later this summer / early fall.
One awesome video This is
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you Shawn :)
@@FishAnything
Very welcome you are
Not sure if this is the right way to do it, but I've brought a clean wash rag for catfish. Hold the mouth on one side with the rag in its' mouth as they have a lot of power and will certainly hurt your hand if they clamp down, then position your other hand under its' belly. This way you don't get stung by their top fin and also as long as you wrap the rag around your hand, it will cushion the blow of their jaw and keep you safe.
Good intel. I used to have a glove that was really helpful for dealing with stronger, rougher fish. Might have to get one and leave it in the yak for big slimeballs lol
Great video. The early part it looked like the docks were suspended - almost like they were AI generated. :p. I’ll have to try shooting under some trees and brush this fall.
I wish I was smart enough to AI generate docks. Then I could also make bigger fish to catch lol
7:34 WE GOT A SQUIRTER!
Hey what measuring board is that really cool and compact? I'm getting into ultralight fishing now so I been watching a bunch of your vids. Great channel to learn from.
Thanks for watching! This is a YakGear board. Works pretty well!
Is that reel spooled with the Spyro braid you made a video about? I’m thinking about getting it for my ultra light
This one has Daiwa J Braid X8 Grand on it. This and Spro are my favorites.
it is called the bow and arrow cast
Had to look it up .
I see it’s used in fly fishing when it’s hard to cast with limited space .
started doing this 60 years ago
Call it whatever you wish, but I think we can both agree that it works :)
Also, at 3:38 your bail was closed. It sounded like your anti-reverse malfunctioned.
It was weird whatever happened lol
*Adds "shooting a jig" to my long list of things to practice with a rod and reel...*
Haha you will master it quickly I trust.
here to support my friends.. thank you for sharing interesting and entertaining videos.. keep up the enthusiasm and always success for all of us
Thank you :) Tight lines!
oh yea fish on shooting is always good.
Such a great way to fish!
Thank you :) will do!
@@FishAnything Thank you very mutch... have a nice Weekend.... see you….
This technique is awesome and definitely something I'll be using with my newly setup UL rig - inspired by your dedicated UL content. But can we talk about why the outer support legs of that dock are literally suspended out of the water? I thought it was an illusion at first but those legs are definitely not in the water. What is going on there? Also love to see you catching those nice cats on the UL. Different for the channel for sure!
I honestly didn't really pay attention to the docks close enough to know, but several folks mentioned this haha I really can't say why they were like that!
hey so shooting the jig only works with mono or you can use it with braid, too? I just put a braid with a mono-backing on my ultralite rod
You can use it with all line types. I prefer braid but I use it with mono too :)
I need more practice.😊
Definitely takes some practice but it gets easier with time!
Is the dock hovering above the water at the beginning, 2:45 ish mark?🤯
Lol no it is just kind of hard to see the beams supporting it.
What’s your electronics set up? Any advice for an easy plug and play system?
This is a basic Lowrance Hook2 5x. Honestly it is a great setup for "cheap and effective".
I think you were able to get the bigger cat out is because Yozuri 4# Hybrid is WAY under rated. It actually breaks at over 8# and that makes sense when you look at the large diameter. They really shouldn't be marketing it as 4# line. Thanks for the dock shooting instructions.
True. I find that all Co-Polymer lines seem to outperform their test ratings.
Hi Ethan! I saw that you were using the Nasci and I had a question. Whenever I use it and i close the bail sometimes the line gets caught on the bearing that is connected to the bail and keeps the line straight and it messes up like 20 yards of line everytime. it also tangles up when i cast it. does this ever happen to you?
Dude I am so glad you brought this up... Happens to me on occasion as well!
@@FishAnything Man! I thought i was the only one! It’s happened to me almost every other cast so Iretired the reel even though I didn’t want to. I’m thinking about getting the Shimano Vanford 500 and seeing how that goes.
What pliers are you using in the vid the orange ones
They are discontinued Buck Knives Splizzors
Would u rather get the nasci 500 or the vanford 500?
The vanford is higher end so I’d go that route, but the Nasci is great for a lot less money so I don’t think there is a wrong option.
They have blues or flatheads up in Michigan?
I believe all the cats I caught that day were channel cats but I believe we have the other species as well.
@@FishAnything not your style to cast a line and wait? I personally prefer to be walking around rather than sit and wait.
I learned how to do this with fly fishing, they call it "bow casting" for fly fishing.
Yeah I have definitely seen it used in the fly fishing world.
Catfish just spawned. Those sores and cuts are from the rocks they spawn in
Yeah I think all these fish were spawning. More to come in the next video lol
No worries about damaging your rod tip doing that? I’ve never sling shotted like that before but I might try, just got a package from Mule fishing in the mail today ready to give ‘em a go
Definitely no rod damage from this. I am putting way less pressure on my rod by shooting a jig than a big fish puts on it when it bites.
I could tell by that steady drag pull it was a cat. I've caught enough catfish on ultralight that I recognize that sound.
Smart man. Just wait until the next video lol
Hi…what size is that reel??
Size 1000!
shooting a jig ... never mind.
Personally I hate handling catfish, it’s always such a fun fight but I’m always bummed out after I land it😂 only fish that’s bit my thumb hard enough to hurt while trying to unhook it
I totally agree lol they are a bit of a pain
How you like that duckett?
Video drops shortly! It is a solid rod for the price for crappie fishing.
@@FishAnything I agree. I have three of them. The Falcon Bucoo 6foot light rod is another under the radar rods. You can pick one up at academy for $50.
Rod name
Dobyns Sierra Trout & Panfish 6'2
Did you just litter your mangled hook into the water?
No, Ethan's all about cleaning up the waterways. He must have flicked some weeds or something else away. You can see and hear him drop the jig into the kayak.
That said, I thought the same thing at first and I had to replay it a few times. I was like, WHAAAAAAAT?! 🤯😭😳
Nah, I dropped it in the little side compartment of my kayak. I never leave trash/junk in the water. I usually try to leave with more than what I showed up with.
2500 Nasci?
Size 1000 Nasci
Catfish are delicious
True
Catfish was Probably beat up from the spawn
I have an advice too. Just pull your kayak next to the dock and drop it down.
