  • Gunz: The Duel is a third-person shooter many players will remember for its technical and fast-paced gameplay.
The franchise had the makings of a competitive modern esport, but a variety of factors led to it sadly falling into the abyss of obscurity.
This is the story of Gunz, the esport that could have been.

@@Akshonesports I humbly urge you to look into the korean f2p shooter called S4League that released in 2007. It's a similar story of a game that suffered the same kind of fate in many ways.
And to this day it still has a very loyal core-playerbase that isn't willing to quit this unique shooter based on a concept that has never been done before and never again, working on their own solutions to keep this gem of gaming alive, whether that may be via private servers or various spiritual successors in developement by passionate long time fans, hoping to keep their favorite game concept alive.
The game is a third person shooter with anime graphics that didn't seem to have aged at all since 2007 (+ incredible Soundtrack) and it will be hard to bring across in this bubble of text, but it REALLY is unlike any other shooter, while actually sharing some similarities to GunZ in a way.
It's decorated with complex tech, consisting of animation cancels and the like, that help you maneuver around the map in the most stylish and slippery fashion possible, to go hand in hand with the main game mode called *TouchDown,* which is the very thing that makes S4 so special.
In *TouchDown* you play a symmetrical map against an opposing team, using your movement tech and sick ass weapons to grab the "ball" (a cute creature named "fumbi") in the middle of the map and reach the goal in the enemy's base to score a touchdown. Though the moment you grab the ball your stamina bar that fuels many (but not all) movement mechanics stops regenerating, meaning you'll either have to play fast and smart to outmaneuver the enemies that try to make you drop the ball by killing you, or you'll have to deal with being limited in movement, but still outplay the enemies, either by teamwork or big brain action.
Your character is allowed to carry 3 weapons, that you'll be able to swap between as much as you like within combat. And each weapon has some kind of implication for your mobility, such as additional movement tech, the lack of it and how fast you run while wielding it. That means that you'll have to decide on a set of weapons that fits your playstyle, making a healthy compromise on what you want and which characteristics and implications of a weapon you can live without. Thus many people choose to specialize their equipment either around defending one's own goal, rushing towards the ball and sprinting towards the goal, or as an option inbetween.
The game modes are either played with only melee weapons allowed, or with guns allowed as a ruleset. The latter ruleset allows all kinds of weapons and additionally you're allowed to carry an ability with you (wings, a grappling-hook, a deployable wall, etc...), though these abilities aren't as dominant within the gameplay of S4 as you'd may think from the sound of it. The gameplay is mainly driven by what you're able to do via the standard movement mechanics (sprinting, walljumps, dodging & airdodging) and what you're able to do thanks to the weapons you're using in terms of tech (there is a lot of discovered tech), leading to much variation in possible playstyles and movement / combat options.
The meta is obviously highly different depending on the ruleset (melee or with guns), melee only for example will give you the chance to outskill and outplay your opponents via your cracked out movement alone, in a way that wouldn't be possible with guns. Since if they don't manage to touch you, they won't be able to kill you and retake the ball. If you're staying out of reach, you're staying out of reach, while you'd be shot at with guns when out of melee reach. In melee only, even if you're out of stamina, leaving you with way less options, you'll always have the ability to clutch it out by playing it smarter. With guns allowed & out of stamina, your movement is slowed down and you're an easier target, regardless of how good your movement is without stamina tech, you just won't be able to dodge bullets as easily anymore. There's a bigger urgency to rush towards the goal while you still have stamina and thus are capable of dodging the bullets, upon picking up the ball. Or you're slowly progressing with your team, dying strategically close to the enemy goal, where your teammates pick it up and score. Of course there's a lot more to it than I can convey via this text though.
The one thing I didn't really touch upon though is how crazy exciting and adrenaline & dopamine fueling these matches were, there is nothing that ever could bring back the feeling me and many others get when playing S4League. Especially learning to use tech correctly to master jumps and movement options that instantly raise your level of ability as a player was so nice. With many maneuvers serving as significant shortcuts that will lead to your death if executed incorrectly ever so slightly, depending on the difficulty of the maneuver you're going for.
And the level design is phenomenal, there's a map that is akin to de_dust2 in a way due to how iconic it is, called Station-2 and it will cause heavy nostalgia trips to any S4 Player you show it to, since that's the map that's been played 80 % of the time due to how crazy good and fun it is.
It really is a massive could-have-been eSports. Heck, if you think about it, it already was an eSports by design.
The lore of the game literally defined that S4League the game is a futuristic eSports of some sort, that people in the future played via some high tech virtual reality device.
Touchdown is as S4 as it gets and was the center of many many clanwars back in the day and tournaments, though you didn't even need that format, since the game's presentation made sure to make every game feel like you were playing grand finals at internationals.
These days everyone plays on a private server called "Xero" without p2w bullshit, and better leadership than aeria games offered, while also now supporting 144 hz and other quality of life improvements.
If you're interested in learning more about this legendary masterpiece that found it's decline due to bad business practices, I suggest visiting the Xero Discord. There will be plenty of passionate people (especially amongst the leadership) that I'm sure are willing to talk about everything surrounding S4 and the interesting history behind Xero, which will be the place to be for S4 Players going forward. They're amazing.
There also is a very VERY informative video, that went semi-viral 2 years ago, called _"What happened to S4 League (My Favorite Childhood's Game)"_ by someone named Dhoomie, he made more videos than that since and was a passionate long time S4League player since alll the way back. You'll possibly be able to get in touch with him as well.
And by all means please watch _"S4 league [Zeta]"_ it is a montage from 2010, so there are probably way better players out there these days, but it shows what S4League was back in the day, what so many fell in love with. [Zeta] is a name that many S4 Players will still recognize, it's ridiculous that that nametag left that kind of footprint.
I'd really love to see a video on this game, the story of S4 really deserves to be retold once more and with Xero still going strong, it'd be awesome to see people that are interested by the concept jump into the game that many are still playing to this day. And with the enhancements Xero offers I'd argue there never was a better time to get into S4League than now
or back when it first released, because you just had to be there :)

from 2009 to early 2011 I was the US GM for GunZ. I worked out of an ijji subsidiary office in Irvine CA. I miss GunZ, honestly one of my favorite jobs I've ever had, the community is amazing and really accepting, running clan wars was so much fun having "Fight the GM" fridays was great. HOWEVER most (like 95%) of my job was forum moderation, player interaction and hacker banning. My typical day would consist of banning somewhere between 25 and 35 hackers.
But getting to spend time with the community and watching people perfect quad-butterflys, or seeing people move from A-style (American style, aka using machine guns or auto pistols while butterflying) to K-style ( using shotguns while butterflying) or watching people learn their first or 2nd butterfly truly made that job and community special.

This game still has the highest skill ceiling of any other game I have played so far, and it's so odd to think that Maiet's (the game's developer) incompetente made both this game great and awful at the same time.
Great because it made k-style possible, basically it was just a style based on animation cancelling everything + some other stuff, and awful because they were just terrible at fixing the game's problems, and the netcode is basically the worst I have seen, there was no lag compensation. The connection was P2P and you had to guess where your opponent would be based on his latency to you, and then shoot there, which was super hard considering how fast paced this game was.

Imagine if Gunz had just a little more diversity in its melee weapons. Like imagine if they actually balanced the game around the combo styles, so if you used a 2hand sword it required a completely different combo style and play style, because the movements are slower, the damage is higher, and blocking is different.
What if everyone started with the same basic gun, and you had to earn stronger guns by fighting over areas of the map where better guns respawn similar to quake?

I was about 8 when the game got its international release, and I was a console kid growing up instead of PC so I never played it. My brother however did, and I'd always wondered about that cool wallrunning shooter he played when I was young was until the Kadai video finally gave me my answer. I still haven't played it but I love the concept for the game and have a strong hope that a full blown esport scene around the game can develop, cause it's so fun to watch and I have nostalgia for it despite never playing.

A similar third person shooter from korea that was bought by an EU company was S4 League. You got to cover that as well, it was pretty much next thing to GunZ from our childhood. Two games were my favorite. Thanks for posting this!

Ah man, I remember reaching the level cap in this and then giving up soon after when the feeling of progress and accomplishment faded. It was never as much fun as when I was a noob and so was everyone else. But I loved the recklessness, aesthetics and balls to the walls learning curve - the game deserved far, far more than the developers gave it. A proper sequel, even.

Wow, haven't thought about this game in forever. I actually seem to remember the community being super welcoming, especially for how competitive the game felt. At least, the folks I ran into when I played this were all pretty nice.
    Great video!

I love games with crazy accidentally mechanics. I remember in an interview, warframe said when players found and popularized a movement bug early on, instead of slapping them on the hand and saying bad, they took a note that players like cool movement and made bullet jumping. More games should do this.

God damn, ive been busy since the pandemic so ive only watched it now, but yeah i do miss playing gunz again i was really active around 2009-13 were ive been jumping from private servers around 2010-2013, when you learn to master the gameplay you hunger for it more which is one of the reasons that kept old players going which now seems it finally bear fruit, i do which that gunz will have a mainstream successor that wont botch the kind of gameplay that made long time players endure and kept the game alive today
