  • Today, we'll learn about wood pen blank stabilizing. While not something ever pen turner takes on, it can be a great way to turn otherwise unusable wood into a stable, turn-able blanks!
This video was also made in collaboration with Bob at RJBWoodturner. Be sure to check out his video where he turns one of my stabilized blanks in his shop.

Just dropped by from RJB's channel. Many thanks for sharing your process for stabilizing blanks. I'm new to pen turning and just enjoying soaking up all the processes that come into play along the way. Have a great day.

Thank you for this video! I’ve not started doing any casting or stabilizing yet because I’m trying to figure out the lingo/vocabulary first. I was excited to learn that Cactus Juice is a brand. That makes so much more sense now. Thanks for helping those of us out here who are still learning. :-)

AWESOME!! I’ve been Stabilizing for over a year. Picked up a couple of tips from your video. 1. The chain looks like it might work better than the bolts and washers I’ve been using. 2. The Strainer. Love that idea to let the blanks dry and SAVE the valuable Cactus Juice. I personally wrap my blanks with foil or at least use a foil base so Cactus Juice is contained in the oven. I also use a digital temp gun to measure inside temp. I found the oven temp gauges are not very accurate. Using an aluminum 3/16 inch plate in the bottom also helps hold the temp and reduce temperature swings. Thank you for your videos. I am always learning.

Don’t let your wife know you were using her good strainer and baking sheet. 🤫. Lol

Best explanation of stabilizing I've seen. One question: others wrap the blank in aluminum foil before putting in the oven. You don't. Is this unnecessary?

      @LostRiverWoodShop  6 ปีที่แล้ว

It's only needed if you are baking a lot of wood and it will be touching. if you're doing a small batch, and they have room, no foil needed. Enjoy the cost savings my friend!

Awesome instructions, btw wish to know more of the vacuum pump specifics so I can get one for myself. Like what cfm and such. Thank You in sharing.

The CFM really isn't a factor in this process. That's just an indicator of how quickly it will remove the air from the chamber. As long as it is capable of pulling full vacuum (30 inches of mercury) you're good. I do believe this means you need to get a 2 stage pump, which are a little more expensive. The Harbor Freight model is $150, and you can check at local HVAC suppliers to see how much they charge. Also, try Best Value Vacs at www.bestvaluevacs.com/ or Curtis Seeback's site www.turntex.com

I see at bestvaluevacs, they warn you about different resin's in use and acquiring a cold trap or else void warranty. But offer safe results using the one you used in the video.

Fureewolf I just learned about cold traps myself. I plan on making one this weekend.

I live in Denver, a mile high above sea level. How does that affect the vacuum I’ll need?

Curtis Seebeck recommends wrapping each piece in aluminum foil for the baking process. I see you don't do that. Looking at the resin seepage I've gotten and how little you got, compared to my experience, I ask do you have drips on the floor of your oven? As I type this I suspect not as the drainage process you used probably eliminates all that excess. I'm gonna try the heavy investment in a dollar store colander and see what results I can get. And maybe save a few bucks on foil. Thanks for the vid...I love it when I learn something new...seems I do that every day.

You only need to wrap the blanks if you have a lot of them in the oven. It prevents them from touching and potentially bonding to each other. There is some resin seepage, but it comes right off of the pan that is in the bottom of the oven. Comparatively speaking, there is less resin on the bottom of the oven than what would be on the blanks had I wrapped them (I've done both). Cleaning Cactus Juice off of the exterior of a blank is a pain - you either have to pick it all off, or sand it off, meaning more time in the respirator.
Just to be sure, I went back to a thread on a Facebook group I belong to and confirmed that you do not have to wrap the blanks. This is a quote from Curtis Seeback:
"No, it is not required to be wrapped in foil. The foil is to contain the mess and also to allow you to put more blanks in the oven at one time. If you do not use foil, you can not stack blanks or let them touch each other or they will glue together."
Resin is going to seep out of the blanks regardless - it's just a matter of what you want to clean after the curing process.
      Thanks for watching Steve!

Lost River Wood Shop that is awesome. I've fab'd a drip pan that sits under the regular grill shelf in the oven that I use when stabilizing alder cones or sweet gum balls that I don't wrap. WooHoo...no more foil wrapping...thanks.

Is wrapping In aluminum foil not needed? Other stabilizers are wrapping in foil.

Tom barnes that’s was my exact same thought. Wrapping it in the foil would also help the bleed out I would think. I wrap mine in foil and it works great but I’m interested to try it without now.

Just added a little more to the response above - basically a quote from Curtis Seeback, the maker of Cactus Juice:
"No, it is not required to be wrapped in foil. The foil is to contain the mess and also to allow you to put more blanks in the oven at one time. If you do not use foil, you can not stack blanks or let them touch each other or they will glue together."
