Thanks Jeff! Being a single mom with a very small budget, I managed to fix this myself! Did not have the budget to buy a whole new mower. But I did it!! Thank you very much!!!
This video was magic for me. I had started this but your video helped me remember about the filler tube screw so I ended up with zero spare parts. My new best friend.
Best pull off the spark plug pipe first before doing anything with the flywheel, because as you're turning the latter, you might accidentally start the engine (admittedly, the chances are low, but not zero), and if that happens, you're in for some serious pain
Jeff, I hit a dirt mound with my 7.5 Briggs, kept running, then quit. I followed this video, sure enough, shorn key. Replaced key, and new blade installed. Flushed carb, tried to start, rattling in lower engine. I tore it down, valves ok, piston ok, but I found a shear key in the oil pan (!) which had bounced around and did a little scratching on the valve gear shaft but perfectly useable; I made sure of timing, I put it all back together, wondering where that shear key came from. (It was purchased new from Sears 3 yrs ago) Won't start. new air filter, adjusted coil with Oreilly's card- I didn't have my .012 guage. Plug looks good but didn't change. I'm looking to your videos to find some answers! Thanks for them, you're a good teacher.
Great video Jeff, I work on these on the side since I retired several years ago. Love it great way to relax, and make hunting and fishing money. Got fortune tied up in tools and specialty tools. The only thing, I really wanted to comment on was, besure to tell your viewers, to pull the spark plug wire. This is a good safety practice! Keep up the good work, and keep the videos coming!
Sorry to be so off topic but does any of you know a trick to get back into an Instagram account? I was stupid lost the login password. I would appreciate any tricks you can give me
@Houston Brysen Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site on google and im waiting for the hacking stuff atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
I usually use a paper calling card to adjust the magneto gap. You can hold the blade while torquing the flywheel nut. Remove the spark plug or put clothes-line in the cylinder. Change the spark plug. Brigg has valve guide tools to replace valve guides. You use a drill to machine the guides. Brigg also has flywheel pullers.
At 13:43, Jeff tilts the entire mower toward the carburetor side, which is usually not recommended because oil can flow through the carburetor and into the air filter. (Experts may do operations however they please). Jeff also wisely uses a torque wrench in his flywheel reassembly.
Take note, I thought I had the same problem then discovered the flywheel nut was torqued so lightly it could be almost loosen by fingers. Initial flywheel key didn't seem out of place or damaged so I tightened the flywheel nut to around 50 pounds. That did the trick.
Hi, I wanted to say that I have successfully repaired my own and my mother's lawn mower due to your videos. in this video you mentioned that you revised the transmission. Could you do a video on that whenever you have another one with a similar transmission? I have a lawn mower with a similar transmission which i'm unable to get in third. thank you.
Older Briggs stationary engines with the heavy cast iron flywheel, had a soft alloy key. Everytime you removed the flywheel you would replace the key, even if it showed no damage. It is much better to sheer a flywheel key than damage the crankshaft of the engine.
Thank You Mr. Jeff for the great video. One question…My mower has briggs and Stratton engine. On top of the cover it says 675 series 190cc 6.75 ft-lbs gross torque. What is the recommended torque to tighten the fly wheel nut.
Jeff I would ad ice that when working on a mower or anything with moving parts always remove the spark plug lead known gas the HT lead because if the engine fired it could cause seriouse accident Phil in stoke in the UK
I always use the big flywheel nut by putting it on flush with the top of the shaft. I use railroad spike tapped tightly into place under the flywheel then tap the shaft with the nut once or twice and the flywheel pops off with no damage to the nut, shaft or flywheel. Works like a charm every time.
Whenever you have to tip a mower on its side, always have the carburetor side up ... so oil doesn't pour out through the Air Filter. You heard between workers, "That's what I do."
overheating is very uncommon unless it is low on oil or the engine is run without the engine cover on it. It is an aircooled engine so it needs the engine cover for maximum airflow
It was real hard to start, when it did it didn't sound right.Just my opinion the advanced timing had something to do with it. Now starts first pull. Like the vids
Jeff, i have a older 1988 Snapper high vac walk behind mower with a 3.5 hp b&s model # 92902 3271-01 i was going to replace the head gasket. when removing parts recoil starter gas tank bracket for throttle linkage i noticed a ground wire broke off one end goes to deck by discharge chute the other end broke off near where coil wire goes to stop switch this motor don't have original carb it has a pulsa prime conversion kit it's hard to tell where this ground wire connects to any ideas? thanks for you're time, Tony
you can disconnect or cut the wire do not let it ground. CAUTION: I think it is a safety feature when it grounds it shuts the coil/magneto/spark down. Probably meant shut it down/grounds it when the chute is raised??
HI MY LAWN MOVER brigg&Statton EX 675 no hit stone or metal , blade balance ,just stop engines about 20 seconds blade kickback ,please how to fix Thanks
Before hemoring the bolt leave the nut inside, cose after the knoking the bolt could damage the tread and to set back the nut will be so dificult as is for me.
Jeff-- I have a similar Troy-Bilt mower, a TB-230 with a Briggs 725ex engine. What size flywheel knock off tool do I need? Yours look like the Tecumseh knock offs.
Need help, I replaced the whole recoil assembly, it pulls back easily and retracts.. When I install it on top of the flywheel, it pulls but won’t retract. Why is that?
Hi Jeff I've got a Briggs 6.5 HP push mower that's acting like it has the sheared fw key.I got to the key and it's not sheared. What else would cause this? thanks

Thanks for watching
The tap technique on the bolt on the starter cup earned a like and sub! The best tip I’ve seen so far. :)
Appreciate you trying down the nut and showing how to jam the blades.. Most others just whizz it on with an impact tool.
Thank you so much Jeff for the idea of hammering the ratchet to break that flywheel nut

Ok vedio is very nice. Thanks. I went to know that Ignition fould does not spark.
Nice work . Good job the crank was not bent .
Yoikes !! If I'd done the job I'd have cleaned off all the dirt and dust prior to reassemby !
That's how I was taught. Since it's off, may as well clean what you can.
Removing dirt solves 50 percent of lawn mower problems, right?
Aren't you supposed to tilt the mower towards the dipstick?
Thank You Mr. Jeff for the great video. One question…My mower has briggs and Stratton engine. On top of the cover it says 675 series 190cc 6.75 ft-lbs gross torque. What is the recommended torque to tighten the fly wheel nut.

Phil in stoke in the UK
good safety tips Phil
you need a cordless impact driver, small, light, takes seconds to pull nuts and bolts.
Always remove the sparkplug cap when working on small engines
Good safety tip!
What are you? Some kind of nerd? Hahaha
My brother in-law lost a couple fingers. Its avery good tip!
My key looks only a bit twisted. Maybe 20percent of width of key. Could that make it run rough? I did hit some harden piles of mulch in the backyard
yes it needs to be exact for correct timing
New subscriber here, have you gotten a work bench by now ? Great video by the way, very informative !!
Thanks friend. All of my work benches are always full! I like the camera angle when they are on the ground too.
@@JeffsLittleEngineService at my age I need to use a work bench all time, if I don't then I will need help to get back up !! lol
Can you use a 3 jaw gear puller to remove the flywheel or is using the knockoff tool the best method?
I always use the big flywheel nut by putting it on flush with the top of the shaft. I use railroad spike tapped tightly into place under the flywheel then tap the shaft with the nut once or twice and the flywheel pops off with no damage to the nut, shaft or flywheel. Works like a charm every time.
Good job well done , .
Nice job , , oh yeah you forgot to clean the crap off the the engine , that sat under the fly wheel ? Lol
nice video!!! Thank You😁
Instead of using a knock off tool I used the original nut with an old socket. Not as easy cuz you need 2 people, but works great.
great tip!
Just curious..why not clean under the flywheel when it was off?
I dunno, I fix. Rarely do I clean.
Awesome! Thank you !
Whenever you have to tip a mower on its side, always have the carburetor side up ... so oil doesn't pour out through the Air Filter. You heard between workers, "That's what I do."
I just fixed my mower with that quantum engine, with that same issue. It ran but very hard to start and overheated.

Lmao. Hit something hard. Like an ant bed? That's what warped the hell out of my Troy Bilt blade. A damn ant bed.
No.
Here's a good tip, when taking a flywheel nut off.
Get a 15/16 impact socket, and 1/2" impact gun.
It's loose, in less than a second. ;)
Jeff-- I have a similar Troy-Bilt mower, a TB-230 with a Briggs 725ex engine. What size flywheel knock off tool do I need? Yours look like the Tecumseh knock offs.

waddling?
Jeff's Little Engine Service
yes, I hit the blade. Don't know if I should replace it too
If the blade is bent there will be a lot of vibration when the engine is running. Definitely replace the blade if it is bent
i have a 45 Briggs the flywheel breaks in half idleing i change it it break again what is it
anyone know
maybe you are tightening the flywheel nut too much. The flywheel can crack if too much torque is put on the flywheel nut.
I think if I was repairing and returning to customer, I would clean it before assembly.
That is a nice thing to do
My wife hit a stump and bent the crank on a 4.5 briggs, oil was even leaking out of the crank hole.
She damaged the oil seal
thank you for your video.
I hit a rock so hard with a lawnmower once, that it bent the blade and the crankshaft.

not bad

Wouldn’t a pulley remover work better
Good idea but no, because that could snap the aluminum flywheel in half.

“Buggered” up flywheel key? I think you meant “sheared” flywheel key.
you shod not tip the mower with the Carburettor down.
