      AMMO NYC Harley Davidson uses a powder coat like clear coat on their bikes. Bought a new all black low rider s, want to detail it out a bit to remove towel marks from the dealership. What do you recommend?

    I just saw this video got posted! Very exciting... In relation to the paint, this car has had some repair work done (it got hit in the passenger side). Not very bad but certainly enough to get repainted on that side of the car. I imagine this is why the paint hardness and softness changed a lot (although Larry explained this could also be due to different types of panels between plastic, steel and in the NSX's case, aluminum). -The proud owner

    It's not a single stage paint job....acura forumla red is a tri coat ....orange base coat with a red tinted clear coat....that's why you see paint transfer. ...I have done two nsx in that color

    Judging by all the motor oils and car stuff on the shelf in this garage, that NSX owner is very loving towards his car. This guy is definitely owning his NSX the right way.

    The NSX has a clear coat. The difference is the Formula Red for the earlier year NSX like the one in this video uses a tinted clear coat from the factory. All other NSX colors use a "Clear non tinted" clear coat. I'm not sure about the later years Red when Honda/Acura changed to "New Forumala Red", but I believe it too has a tinted clear coat. More research info can be found on the NSX websites.

      Chris Kam Finally, we get an educated answer. This makes perfect sense. Mazda is now using some tinted clears on their vehicles. Their Machine Gray is an example.

    When you determined that some parts of the car had soft paint due to seeing the paint transfer on the pad, how can you be sure that the owner of the NSX hadn`t used Colour Magic or whatever it`s called in America (polish with a red dye added) and that it wasn`t in fact that what was transferring?
    I`ve been detailing cars here in the uk for about 18 years and have come across that loads of times when power polishing cars especially red ones.

    You don't really ever explain what hard and soft paint even is. You just say how to tell if it is hard or not when you're polishing. What even is it? Is there any difference in quality between the two? Why make a paint hard or soft?

  • @fullwerkes
    @fullwerkes 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Larry, I just want to add to this that you could have increased the cut by spritzing the pad with detailer. I think it is important to note also that even though you used a light abrasive polish the pad will still cut on its own even with water. I also tend to use different polishes once I feel a pad is perfect for a job. The reason why I do this is I can guage easier the abrasiveness of the polish much more precisely than pad cut. //Fullwerkes Detailing, UK
    P.S. Love your videos.

    when compounding/polishing what type of microfiber towels would you recommend from getting micro marring from the mf towel?

  • @TomClaessens
    @TomClaessens 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    So Larry you only change the pads based on your finding if the paint is soft/hard? It's a system I like. Because usually you have soft, medium and hard pads... but in addition polishes with varying abrasiveness - so you have like 10 or more possible setups, which complicates things.

    Hi Larry,
    Would this paint difference come from the car being resprayed at some point? Could you shortcut the testing process by knowing if the panels are metal, carbon fiber, or fiberglass? What's the easiest way of telling if the paint is base/clear opposed to single stage paint?
    Thanks!

    If I got paint transfer like that I would stop polishing that panel immediately. Is it ok to keep going when this much paint is coming off? Clearly there is no clear coat left on this panel and you can't be far from blowing straight through the paint to the primer underneath.

  • @Philly2429
    @Philly2429 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah thats single stage. Pretty much the difference between single stage and 2 stage paint is the amount of steps that when you are in the paint booth actually spraying the paint. Single stage is a 1 stage painting process, You have the color of your car (base coat) mixed with a material that acts as clearcoat to add the shine. Single stage is much faster/cheaper/Maaco paintjob. 2stage is you spray the base coat, and then bring out your separate bottle of clearcoat to spray. Great vid

    May I ask, for how much do you polish a whole car for ex :2014black BMW 5 and how much time does it take for you if it is in a quite bad condition?

  • @chrisjones7638
    @chrisjones7638 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you're getting paint transfer then it's either single stage paint or whoever painted the car mixed color in with the clear to give it more depth. But if the car is just normally clear coated then there should be no color on your pads.

    NSX original paint is a tri-coat system, maybe at the same time is soft but the clear is tinted so the pad will always come up with color

    Great video. I was wondering what your thoughts are on hand pads for removing swirls & water spots? I'm thinking of trying those just because I don't have the money to spend on a "Porter Cable" product. I know that you like applying wax with an applicator pad. I have been putting off using paint sealant because I hate that I would be temporarily sealing in those water spots & swirls.

    your back plates are different one from other, one have holes, the other don't.
    well, the rupes have more heat than the DA? cause i think the DA have always more heat in the gear head. in my DA the pads actually get very hot and the glue in their velcro start to melt :S what cause deformation in the pad...
    some tip for that?

    Would a compound on a polishing pad be more aggressive then polish on a cutting pad?

    • @Amphibious_NL
      @Amphibious_NL 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Ctyler93 there are different grades of polish, and compunds. Think of it like a spectrum. Likewise the pads are available in all sorts, like all grades of sandpaper grit. So there are unlimited combinations, its just a matter of trial and error in many cases to find the perfect combo (as larry shows).

    I am doing some experimentation on foam pads and abrasives such as compound to see how hard or soft the paint is. I have a 2011 Ford F150, i heard that Ford Limited Company as hard paint. Ive tried CCS orange pad, with the porter cable 7424XP with Wolfgang 3.0. Yellow is too aggressive which i know at first. There is minor imperfections such as swirls and scratches. Any thoughts.

    ok . I got your point that it is soft paint because of material removal from polishing compound. What I don't get it is that how come paint trace on the form pad. what I mean is that there is clear coat between the pad and paint. Does the pad remove all clear coat and contact to paint?

    Question for ya...
    If I'm not able to wipe the compound off successfully with a microfiber cloth, what exactly is causing this? and would isopropyl/alcohol spray help in this situation? I first suspected it was too much product, but then I toned it down and thought it could be time to change the pad. Could it be a poor wax stripper that I used, causing leftover wax residue?

I've been looking through a lot of your videos and I hope that I've gathered all the information that can help me do the job properly. Also, I am trying to learn from your paint chip tutorial. I am debating whether I should go with green or orange pad for compound for my Audi A6 (Navy) and MB C300 (Black). They are both 5 years old. I've heard that I should use green pad for german vehicles but there are a lot of swirls and scratches on the car and am trying to go with orange pads. Which pad do you think I should use?

    If you want to know a hard from a soft finish, talk to a" painter, restorer " and Yes, as a few savvy posters noticed with clear coat their is no color lifting unless your thru the clear or on a single stage paint. The early nsx is a four stage application as a criss Kam mentioned several months ago. and that changes the polish results again another way
