Nanning in Southern China was one of the homes of the Bai Yue people (100 Tribes of Yue) a few thousand years ago. Some migrated to what is now Indochina like Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam etc
Most Yue people are still in China, now they are commonly known as Cantonese, but the term Yue is still being officially used to represent the Yue region. Cantonese cuisine is more commonly called Yue cuisine not Canton cuisine. Yue opera is another common term rather than calling it a Canton opera.

Something about Nanning that you may find interesting is that Nanning is a City that is set up to be the center of trade among Southeast Asian countries with China and also the world. 8:19, this building is the House of Indonesia (not Thailand as you said), I have been to Nanning more than 10 times and my favorite restaurant is close to that House of Indonesia (and I happen to be from Indonesia too). So across Nanning, you will see House of Commerces from these South East Asian countries, even the roads are named for example: the cooperation road between China and Thailand, Cambodia, and so on.
Guangxi is close to Thailand and Vietnam, that’s why the architectural style you saw is some what similar to Thailand. I’ve also heard that some locals can even communicate with Thai people in their dialect. By the way, Guilin is a good choice for you to visit.
