  • The Life and Crimes of Billy the Kid: A Last Serenade to One of America's Most Controversial Outlaws. OUR FAVORITE OUTLAW OF THE AMERICAN WEST.
In the late 19th century a young man named Henry McCarty changed his name to William H. Bonney and became one of the best known historical characters of our Western mythology. We know him as “Billy the Kid.” Interest in “the Kid” continues to grow as new information comes to light to reveal the fascinating personality of a boy orphaned at the age of 14 and cast out into the violent world of 1870’s New Mexico Territory.
Determined to survive, Billy fell in with seasoned outlaws who schooled him in a life of crime. It wasn’t long before he was forced to kill when a bully overpowered him.
After trying a career at rustling livestock, Billy chose to go straight. But his intentions were derailed by the Lincoln County War, which began with the assassination of Billy’s newly found mentor and boss. Now there would be more killings by his hand, but, an argument could be made for these murders being justified - even righteous - in a land whose court system and government agents were so corrupt that eventually the President of the United States was forced to intervene.
As the momentum of the war rolled on, Billy - still a teenager - found himself elevated to the role of leadership among his companions. He lived a short life to the age of 21, when Sheriff Pat Garrett infamously killed him inside a darkened room at night.
Who was this young Irish lad who was so loved by the Hispanic community of the Southwest? How was he able to remain so likeable, courteous, and full of fun when others around him had hardened to stone to endure a violent lifestyle? This probe into the mind of Billy Bonney and the war-torn land that he loved may give an audience a new understanding of the dichotomous nature of history. One person’s “bad man” is another person’s “good guy.”

You're painting John Tunstall out to be an innocent competitor. He wasn't he just wasn't prepared to be quite as violent as Dolan...Mc Sween set up Tunstall knowing he was naive...This differs from the movie Young Guns...but true...Dick Brewer was one of the ranch hands...but most Tunstalls employees were killers in case he had to use violence he didn't strike first and lost his life

Here's my take on Tunstall. I believe he would have been a very serious competitor. Ruthless? Only time would have told. But time ran out for him. He was naive by degrees but not totally so. He must have known how vicious Dolan could be, because he hired men who could stand up to The House by using the violence for which he probably did not have a capacity personally. He was willing to hire men to cover that aspect of "business." His naivety can be summed up by his reliance on the "law" to protect him. We see that in his turning toward his assassins to sort things out. The big difference in Tunstall and Dolan is that the Englishmen had no wish to be the aggressor physically. But he planned for defense. I consider Dolan to be one of the worst of humanity. Compared to the Irishmen, the Englishman was tame.

Garrett was a liar. His version no longer holds any water. He was told at the time he'd shot the wrong man. And the other deputy in old age admitted he lied about it.

That admission by Deputy Poe is apocryphal. Someone took his latter day words and twisted them out of context. Garret did, no doubt, create some fiction, but he killed the Kid.

@@markwarren650 Hi Mark, I love your videos, but I'm on the Brushy side for many reasons. Here is a small sample. Garrett's daughter wrote a letter to Ola Everhyard stating that her dad did not Kill Billy. The description of the body was that of a dark skinned black beard person. Jimmy Thomas a second grandson of Oledia Maxwell, Pete's daughter, claimed it was common knowledge in the Maxwell family including Pete that Garrett did not kill Billy. On July 15 BTK's horse was missing, but Billy Barlow's horse was still in the coral and was never claimed

There were so many locals who witnessed the Kid's body after his death that any other conclusion about who was killed simply falls into the category of: "It's a lot more fun to imagine that the Kid lived on." What a great ending that would be, but it just isn't so. @@davidhall1840

Why did Wallace except those with indictments that just seems corrupt

Wallace made an effort to resolve things, but he did not act with the authority he should have employed. He was new to the territory and may have felt that he would overstep if he annulled indictments already in place. Perhaps it was a way NOT to estrange himself from the NMT judicial system. (Did he know how corrupt Bristol and Rynerson were?) But as it happened, he DID offer Billy a full pardon, even though Billy had an indictment out on him for the murders of Brady and Hindman. Wallace's unforgivable act was leaving Billy in the clutches of Bristol and Rynerson, who blatantly disobeyed the governor.

You lost me at the escape. He hit the guard somehow, reported on autopsy, and took 1 of the two guns he had on him. Also, he missed the guard running and was hit by a ricochet. You should include a map of these events and territory, with the ranches he worked for or whom he stole from, etc.

Normally our videos are no more that 30 min, but this was an event at the Booth Western Art Museum that had a one hour time frame to just discuss Mark's book. There was no room to add maps and other.
I am not sure if anyone has produced an ACCURATE map of Billy's life from birth till death. Would be a good project for someone to tackle.
