Billy The Kid's Legendary Escape

  • The greatest escape in the history of the Wild West: when Billy the Kid shot his two guards and escaped hanging on April 28, 1881. The legendary outlaw was chained to the floor of the Lincoln Courthouse and he also had handcuffs on. He had two guards watching him day and night, and somehow, someway he escaped. For the first time ever, this is the great escape story with all the twists and turns of legend and movie myth piled on top. We will not only get to the bottom of what actually happened, but we will also examine how exactly the Kid shot deputy U.S. Marshal Robert Olinger with his own shotgun! Crazy, huh?

    So cool that you can stand right in the window and look down at the plaque right where Ollinger fell. Lincoln is just like stepping back in time...

    Interestingly, on June 8, 1892, Edward O'Kelley also said, "Hello, Bob." just prior to firing both barrels of a shotgun into Robert Ford, killing him instantly, and becoming "the man who killed the man who killed Jesse James".

      @DK-gy7ll ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I was just going to mention this. O'Kelley's killing of Bob Ford was in my opinion far colder than Billy the Kid's killing of Bob Olinger. Not only was Bob Ford's killing premeditated, but he basically had his entire face blown off from just a couple feet away.

    I visited Lincoln and Fort Sumner from the UK during July 2023, just be aware if you are planning a visit, they only open the Historical sites like the Old Courthouse on a Thursday, still not appear to have yet fully returned to normal after Covid.
    Definately worth visiting inside the old Courthouse to stand at the window where Billy stood.

    I like the idea of “Hello Bob” being woven into the story. Perhaps it is one part Hollywood and another part observation from those at the time or historians, but for myself what makes Billy the Kid so legendary is the sense you get about his wit, humor and cunning. The statement fits his character well and enhances that feeling.

    I had a brother-in-law who was named Bob and I always greeted him by repeating Billys words "Hello Bob...". I used the same tone of voice but he never knew why I said it that way. I had told my former husband the Billy the Kid escape story, prior to my saying this. Every time I would say it, my husband and I would break out in hilarious laughter.

    I can never decide whether I like the simple "Hello Bob" or another version, "Look up old boy and see what you get." Likely neither was spoken by the Kid, but one kind of wishes he did say something of the kind. The poetry of the moment wants it so!

    Whether it actually happened or not we’ll never know but it played out great in Young Guns II. Those 2 films seemed to grab as much of the Billy The Kid folklore as possible whether true or not. Fun and historical.

    Consider a known outlaw shot both lawmen dead and no one wanted to be the next dead hero is easy to understand. Few people had guns and fewer would think this was a smart idea. Billy the Kid had nothing to lose except a hanging. The politics of the story meant some of the town’s people were not unhappy the Kid was leaving town.🤔

    Knowing Billy's sense of humor, and his hatred of Olinger I'm pretty sure that Billy would want Olinger to see him with the shotgun. And to get his attention to look up Hello Bob is a lot more quirky than just Hey Bob. So i believe it.

    Where did the myth of the 18 dimes in the shotgun originate? I recall "MythBusters" tried to recreate that and the dimes did not hold a close pattern but rather went all over the place thus rendering them useless unless at very close range.

    Charlie Jones, a friend
    in Carlsbad, NM, told me Olinger shot his Uncle John in the back, at a cabin by Malaga, NM. The Jones Family wanted revenge for John’s murder. Billy the Kid was a friend of theirs, and told them : he would take care of Olinger & they shouldn’t get in trouble with the law. Billy kept his promise !!! I also met a older woman in Walgreens who claimed to be a relative of Billy, and he relocated to West Texas and raised a family !!
