  • Can you really learn how to read and write Thai in just four weeks? You sure can and I did it at Duke Language School in Bangkok. Here's my full review of the class which lasted four weeks, weekdays 1pm to 4pm.

You nailed it! Growing up Thai, I never once thought it was tough. But now, with my kids in an international school, man, teaching them Thai homework is like เข็นครกขึ้นภูเขา

The best most comprehensive reviews of the Duke school in existence! Question: do you have any specific suggestions for those who self-study or work with audio/video materials to learn Thai- but will eventually go to Duke (in one or two years)? In other words, is there a strategy where you can focus on things that won't overlap with what is taught in Duke so you gain the maximum benefit (being able to retain what is taught in Duke way more easily due to familiarity & meanwhile not being bored at Duke repeating stuff that is too easy for you)?

I wouldn't change anything with your self study. It's completely fine to have overlap because you'll probably forget much of what you learn anyways. If the instructor covers it again in class, consider it a bonus and it will make you faster.

Hi. Great videos! I'm at DUKE now taking J2. I will complete J3 by end of May. I've heard mixed reviews of Duke's Explore as the best method to learn the alphabet/writing; is it just too much lecture with not enough chance to practice the spoken language? If visa is not an issue for me, would you recommend a different path to learn the alphabet/writing? Self study or enrolling at Chula like you did? Or just buy the Duke Explore textbook and get a private tutor? Do you plan to go back to to DUKE at all to complete the 3rd set of modules (Connect)? Thanks.

Learning to read and write at Duke is perfectly fine for most people. It's a great school. Pretty sure Duke will not sell you the textbook without going to class. Yes I'm going back to Duke for a few months and then going back to Chula. While some people can learn to read/write by themselves, it's going to be a tough slog.

Sounds like a great class. I’ve already bought a course so don’t really want to pay for another. Would they allow me to buy just the workbook? I think it would be pretty useful to learn from a few sources.

I don’t know. It’s best to ask duke themselves I will say just the workbook isn’t going to help much

Sounds bonkers. Are you good with languages in general, you sound like you are? I was pathetic with languages in school, not sure if it's even worth my while. Do Duke have a school in Phuket or any recommendations for phuket?

I'm ok with languages, but if the other students in class can finish this class, then so can you. If you're just starting out with Thai, you should start with Journey 1,2 or 3. I don't have any recommendations for phuket, but you can probably google and sit in for trial classes to see which ones seem ok.

"Good with languages" often isn't really a thing. The reality is that if you tracked your hours, you'd reach the same level at the same number of hours of study as the next guy. It's just that it is THOUSANDS of hours. People have absurdly unrealistic expectations about gaining some real ability in just a fev hundred hours. Even with Spanish, you might utter some semi understandable garbage at 500 hours, but you won't understand anything they say back unless they are a teacher doing baby talk
