RC4WD TF2 - Preparing a RC Hard Body

- I've gotten myself a RC4WD TrailFinder 2, a scale crawler that I've been meaning to get for a long time. Fitment of the various quality parts is absolutely effortless, the finish is off the hook!
Now to get this rig ready for the trails I have read up a little on how to prepare and paint up a hard body. This is a first time for me doing this, so I'm very excited to learn something new, and hopefully get some good result. There were a few minor problems I ran into when getting into all the details of mocking up the Mojave body, however: so far this car is just excellent. I know the pricetag might scare some people off, but you absolutely get your money's worth!

So far a ton of fun to paint indeed! I still can't believe how detailed this thing is. I think I need to get some clear to finish it up afterwards, and I will give the wax a try as well, thank you for the tip!

carnt wait to see it chris, i did my first hard body a few months ago and just loved it, especially for a crawler. i did a defender for my scx10. i chopped the body to turn it into a pick up. automotive filler is a great way to fill gaps and dints. love the work mate
Sure do! It's just too cold outside to run them. We had more snow today, this time of the year last season I was out with the ATV already. Crossing my fingers for zero plus temperatures!
I got the same system in the SCX10, and I'm very pleased with it. I think with the two speed it will even be better performing in this ride!
It honestly surprised me when I compared it to the rest of the kit, which was flawless!
Sorry for the late reply, Felipe! The 3rd channel servo is to switch between low and high gear, but you can do this manually as well. I hope this helps!
my back panel was warped, so I boiled a pot of water and submerged the plastic for a minute or two and then it was really easy to bend it straight.
Great tips right there! I will be experimenting with different paints on future builds, that is some excellent info.

Patience, a steady hand and lots of masking tape!

I want a Defender too! There are so many parts available for those, that I think I would completely lose myself in painting and detailing it to make it ultra scale. Which shell did you get, RC4WD?

Very informative video, specially since i have a Mojave 2 body that I want to prep and paint. I want to turn my TF2 into a truggy, just the cab and a tube rear bed. On the cab I need to remove the rear window arrembly and replace it with the provided cab back panel, but that rear window assembly comes glued to the rest of the cab from factory (RTR version - a Marlin Crawler body). My question is if it is possible to unglue this plastic part and what method I should use. I thought of acetone bath or applying heat, but im not sure if I can mess up the body integrity (deforming the plastic). I will really appreciate it if you can help me with this. Thank you.
Im new to rc.... Any body for a 313mm wheelbase should work for any rc right?
Hi, I have painted my Gelande shell with 3 coats of Tamiya TS paint today in gloss black. The finish is no where near as shiny as i would like. What would you recommend? I am new to painting models. Can i lacquer it with some kind of Tamiya lacquer? Many thanks
You can definitely clear coat it, but wet sanding it with some real fine paper also helps greatly.
I'll just make the best of it, it's a test body anyway, so no worries if it isn't 100 percent perfect. ;)
Can I ask a question? So im trying to paint my hard body but everytime i use the tamiya masking tape to make the lines so I can paint the other side a different color when I take the tape off it leaves a streak of residue that makes me have to start all over and sand it and paint again but all I will be doing is going is circles. My question is if I leave the residue will this clear coat cover it and make is vanish? Or do you have a suggestion to get rid of the residue? Before you suggest some products I did some researching and I tried Wd40, Water, Goo Gone and using more tape to stick it and bring it up but none of these work. Thanks for any help!
when you attached the back cab wall. did u find u needed to have the box attached first in order to get a tight fit... did u fill the seams afterwards and sand it out to make it look seemless?
Hi there, I just bolted them together, went pretty much without any issues.
yeah i orded it through them and got it sent down here to australia. im going to get another one and not modify it like the other one. ive got the dingo and honcho so ill get them both going for me and my 6yo nephew. im getting the losi 5 in the near future and carnt wait to get the penta body. i think ill hafto propose to my girlfriend first so she doesnt get mad. one again chris im a big fan carnt wait for more vids.,
9 years later and those molding lines are still there in 2023 lol. Oh well. Going to paint it anyways.
I bought two extra mojave bodysets for my tf2 and they all were warped.
do i wet sand the paint after spraying and how do i clear coat?
Please, what is the porpoise of the 3rd channel servo? I'm going to build mine, and want to know these details...is it necessaryy?

Funny thing about colors Ford had this color on a Ford Ranger pick up called purple but when you looked at the color it surely did look blue not pruple.. Like you said who comes up with naming these colors. My guess people who use drugs lol i don't know..

Bit of a shame given the price of these things the body had those flaws. I'd probably mess up getting the dent out of the roof and end up with a hump :-)
