My son aged 12 had his surgery for scoliosis yestreday- he is already disabled and had been through alot. The surgeon made two incisions- one on the side of his chest to losen the spine and then the back to fix the rods. At the moment he is in a lot of pain and is being relaxed with morphin. The surgery lasted exactly 8hrs. You have to praise the skill & patience of these surgeons.

to spine doctors out there, is there any direct relation between the junber of screws to the straightness of the spine after fusion? thanks. ive had spinal fusion 3 years ago because i have a 45 degree curve and there are spine disks that does not have a screw... so i still have a curve.. but its significantly smaller than before the surgery. thanks very much.

So, if you still don't get the surgery, think that it's for a greater good and you'll realize after everything goes by, trust me

I had my surgery in 2004 I have 2 titanium rods with screws I am know 25 an doing great I still have them attached to my spine an I can pretty much do anything I want.
Please how much did the surgery cost?.

can you still exercise and play sports and do flips when you are done healing after the surgery? since it becomes like just one huge bone is it more likely to break ?
I have had this surgery & yes, when you are healed you can do the regular things, just maybe a little bit stiff.

Most of the time they can stay in. You *can* have them removed, but if they aren't causing problems most people don't bother. They don't usually cause any more impediment than the fusion itself.
I've had some of my hardware taken out because it was causing problems, but if you don't have to, why go through another expensive surgery? =)

Nnovata Karen It depends a lot on where the fusion and the rods are located.
Twisting is going to be pretty impaired for everyone, but bending (like to touch your toes) happens mostly in the lumbar section of the spine (lower back).
So I can still touch my toes, but it also has to do with how flexible you are to begin with =)
(For frame of reference, my fusion and rods extend from T5 - T12)
I have almost a third degree scoliosis which is s-shaped and a hump. Can I do this operation? By the way, I'm 15.
Hi! I'm 15 too and I just had the operation a few months ago. My scoliosis was a large hump in the middle of my back and three curves, with one that was 52 degrees. You can definitely get the operation, and mine is not completely straight, but it is so much better now and I have such better posture. If you're ready, you can definitely do the operation as long as you talk to your parents about it and find a great surgeon at your hospital. There will be several stages to getting surgery and there's plenty of time to get to know your surgeon and anything you need to know before having it. I planned mine more than 6 months in advance, and having a bunch of friends and family supporting will get you through anything! I would recommend it for you :) good luck!

Question: in this surgery, you have to "lock" the spine in a certain position. In What angle you choose to leave the lombar spine (lordosis) and/or the thoracic spine (kyphosis)?
Depends on the grade of the initial deformity of the curve. Ideally you should restore them to normal values, which are 20° to 40° (Cobb method) of kyphosis for the thoracic segment (T4-T12) and 50° to 70° lordosis for the lumbar segment (L1-S1).

Thank you for the interesting video. My son, 15, is going to have Scoliosis surgery for a curve in his lumbar. Question: Once the surgery is completed, how will he bend over? It seems that with two stiff metal rods that would be difficult! I'm sure there's a way. I just can't visualize it. Also, Given his age and a 40 degree curve, how much flexibility will he lose? 10% 20%?
I am not sure if your son has already had the surgery but I am also 15 and I am two months post up. I am a dancer so I had lots of flexebility. The only thing I really lost was arch flexibility in my back but everyday I get more and more. I can also bend over just fine and although it seems like a crazy invasive surgery, I am back to all of my activities.

Theyre pretty much there to make the spine one huge bone. There is an option to remove them but there wouldnt be a difference..
Winston Benedict my soctors told me that i have the option to have the rods taken out because mine was done with bone grafting meaning the bones are already in place becaus eof the fusion. but personally i dont want to have it removed as that would mean that ill undergo the same pain ive been through after my operation.
lets just say that uts bot a walk in the park to recover from a back operation. hehe.
I also think if you would take the rods out, the spine would gradually return to the similar level of scoliosis. Why? Because scoliosis might be a neuromuscular disorder, which causes the muscles to fire in a pattern, which curves the spine. For example, one side of the body in the thoracic region receives a substantially lower level of activation. It might be pre-programmed in an individual before birth or the individual simply learns the wrong muscle firing patterns, e.g. by sitting or standing incorrectly and maybe the CNS is not as plastic and does not allow the muscles to return to their original shape. That's how I approach my scoliosis and just try to re-educate my muscles of both sides to fire simultanously, particularly the ones responsible for breathing.

gricius In my case, a deformation of my right arm (where I have a 1/4 sized thumb; A short bone inside that is not connected, a pointer finger where the skin has grown over the nail leaving the corners to patrude when as it grows and the middle finger which is combined at the tip with the index otherwise seemingly one finger.) where my shoulder, arm and hand did not finish duplicating the other... Anyway the muscles in my left arm slowly pulled at my spinal cord causing a kind of "S" shape. At 12 I had made it to a 51° in one spot and Shriners Children's Hospital paid for my Spinal Fusion Surgery... I am now 31 years old and while I deal with a good bit of back (and neck) pain, I'm thankful to be able to walk. As for the arm, I've rarely needed it to get by for the most part. It's the way life has always been. I just thought I'd share how and why I have Scoliosis

you can gain length from 1 to 2 inches
I actually gained 3 inches from my surgery. Crazy to grow that much over just one night!!

Yoga will not fix this. Get more neurosurgeon and orthopedic surgeon advice before you let 1 surgeon make the decision for you.

depends on your doctors fee and also the hospital. mine was about one million pesos and thats about $20,000.00 in dollars. but it was done here in the philippines so i dont know how much it is in the states

Trust me, I am 15 and I had it done and it is not that bad! i am extremley active (snowboarder,dancer,runner) and I will be able to do all of it once I let myself heal!
yes you are 15, that means your body is still growing! Your body will get used to it.
Im 22, so my body is not growing anymore. My body will not take it as good as yours :/

Yep, very primitive, same rods and same technology for the last 100 years ! They couldn't come with some new shape rods, new material, new thechnik to avoid fussion in adults. Shame on the today scoliosis doctors !!!!
