It’s probably already been said in another comment, but Casey Edwards was a huge fan of the series prior to getting to work on DMC5’s soundtrack. When CAPCOM asked him to come back to make Vergil’s battle theme for the Special Edition of 5 he assumed it would be the last time he’d ever get to work on the series so he put his absolute all into this song. The last 3 minutes of the song especially are a love letter to the series and the character of Vergil who, since Devil May Cry 3 in 2005, has been the gold standard for “rival” style antagonists in games.

CAPCOM specifically said that they didn't want guitars on the theme, because that instrument was kind of a signature for Dante, who is Vergil's brother and the protagonist of the series. So Casey found a workaround, he included a bass and HEAVILY distorted it to the point it's almost indistinguishable from a guitar. After he done the entire song without a guitar, since the last three minutes are his love letter, he included the guitar, his mindset was "well, I've done the entire theme as per requested, if they dislike the last three minutes they can just cut it out and the theme is still complete". The reason the end is so depressing is because Virgil's story is, Virgil thought that his mother abandoned him to die in their burning house. He thought that she left him to save only his brother Dante. But I reality she died trying to look/save him. Virgil didn't find that out until Dante told him. So the end ing lines of the son "drifting in the ocean all alone" makes a whole lot of sense because that's how he felt.

For non DMC fans: Bury The Light is a song for the half-human half-demon son of the Legendary Dark Knight, Sparda. An ancient demon with incomprehensible power that fought to protect humanity rather than destroy it. Sparda dissappears early on in the life of his sons. At a slightly older age, the mother of Vergil and his twin brother Dante were killed by demons. Their house burnt to the ground. At the time, Dante was inside with his mother (who protected him before her death and hid him from the demons). Vergil was out in the fields outside enjoying some alone time. Their mother dies before Vergil ever sees her again. He returns home later that day, seeing his house in ruins and his entire family gone. Vergil is led to believe he lost everything. He only ever wanted to be strong enough to protect his family and now he has lost it all. He goes on a crazed journey searching for power. He must surpass Sparda, he must beat Dante, he must avenge his mother. *His power shall be absolute.* In this journey he is manipulated, lied to, and gets the shit beaten out of him time and time again by his twin - who Vergil believes doesn’t deserve the power he has (Vergil claims that Dante has “never lost anything” since he actually got to say goodbye to their mother Eva. Dante says power isnt about loosing things, but “its about fighting like hell to protect whats right”). In DMC5, Vergil separates his human and Demon halves in search for more power. He throws away all emotion to be the strongest. He is willing to give up every shred of humanity within him to be all powerful. He will *never* lose again. Throughout the songs Devils Never Cry (Dante’s DMC 3 theme), Subhuman (Dante’s DMC 5 theme) and Devil Trigger (Nero’s theme), humanity and demonic urges are described as Light and Darkness respectfully “We are falling, the light is calling, tears inside me, calm me down” “Embrace the Darkness thats within me”, etc. This song, a love letter to Vergil from Casey Edwards (who loves this damn series so much), is about Vergil throwing away his humanity for his goals. He, quite literally, is willing to “Bury the Light deep within” for his own gains. In DMC 3, Vergil is manipulated to fighting against Dante for someone else’s cause. Although Vergil comes to his senses and begins fighting for his *own* reasons by the end of the game, he learns one thing. The man manipulating him, after having Vergil beat the ever loving shit out of Dante, claims that “a storm is approaching.” As their plans come to fruition. That storm is Vergil Sparda. The Alpha and The Omega. The First and Last. The Beginning and The End. He who Is, He who Was, and He who Will Be. “To see one’s justice through, a man must fight for it. Even if the one who stands before him *is his kin.* The brothers of blood disagree on the very REASON of their existence. *They must fight.”*
@@TheN13 As someone who has only ever seen the abbreviation of max0r's insanity i can appreciate knowing the real story arc. And damn does it make this theme even stronger.
Now this is what I’m talking about, just pure unadulterated awesomeness 😎 (Fun fact: Casey Edwards, the producer of the song was only allowed to use an electric guitar in one portion of the song due to Capcom’s wishes. All the other guitar-like sounds are simply distorted synths)
Right off the bat, I appreciated you reading the composers(?) of the track. You're like that music professor who actually makes music interesting. Or maybe I just had a boring one lol.
Man I think japanese games in general are masterpieces when it comes to soundtracks. Games like Dmc 5, Persona 5, and Metal Gear Rising have such amazing songs!
This is possibly the best piece of music within a game of Capcom’s library. I mean this sincerely. Vergil is the absolute golden boy of “rival player/non-player character” as well as being a great measure of progression. In DMC 3 you fight him plenty of times, and each time, his moveset (like yours) grows EXPONENTIALLY stronger, and it’s up to you to strategize and find ways around his moves.
If only you knew exactly how well this song is written to represent Vergil as a character. Still waiting for someone to do like a lyric analysis and guess the story
The best part is that this song directly reflects previous songs in the series. The combination of 2 opposing sets of lyrics at 14:38 is almost certainly taken from the end of Devils Never Cry, the theme of the 3rd game.
I thought i was the only one who noticed that! Good job dude from 1 year ago. I love this song so much and I really love how vergils theme references his brothers theme
virgils story is actually probably one of the most tragic stories all he did was search for power after everything happened and he was alone so the drifting through the oceans all alone is kinda important to his character i would advise playing through the games like 1 through five skip the xbox 360 dmc devil may cry tho lol

15:50 That's the power of Bury the Light. It motivates people into playing the game. Always brings joy to my heart to see someone discovering this gem. Also if you're interested in reacting to more Jazz pieces, I'd highly recommend the Main Theme of Gundam Thunderbolt, a series that successfully blends the chaos of the battlefield with free-form Jazz.
In the words of Count Dooku “I’ve been looking forward to this”!! Super excited to see your amazing in depth thoughts as usual! Fun fact, this song actually plays in the game. But it works like this: the song gets into the cooler parts the better the combo you get, so as you get progressively farther and farther in your combo, the song reveals more and more of itself. It’s awesome!
I'm so glad you reacted to this and loved it! I seriously love your videos because you provide a lot of information on the way along with you breaking down those songs! Keep it up man! ♥️🔥

Bury The Light makes literally everyone want to play this game, it's just something that grand that dropped in the world of video game OST. I also recommend checking out V's Theme from the Devil May Cry series, it's really weird sounding, but it really grew on me and that quirkiness is what makes it fun!
I've never played the Devil May Cry series, either (am planning on it), and I always thought that it was the classic good brother and bad brother trope, but after listening to this song a few times I thought "Wait, this guy isn't inherently bad, he wants power to protect people who are too weak to protect themselves..." Then I listened to the song once more and almost cried. Casey Edwards and Victor Borba really hit different.
You're right about that... Vergil never was truly evil. While he was ruthless and cold and acting selfish, his main motivation was to become stronger because he couldn't protect people he cared about many years ago, and he wanted to follow in his father's footsteps in someway. He just never had a... "Moral compass" Dante had because of their different lives. He says it best himself in Devil May Cry 5 "What would have happened if our places had been switched? Would you have my life and would I have yours?"
Vergil believed he lost everything as a child when his entire family disappeared one day randomly. Dante knows what happened because *he* was with his mother when it happened, and got to say goodbye. Vergil was alone. He just wanted to protect his family, but on the path to power he lost his way. He was cheated, manipulated, and beaten down time and time again.
@@kevinheraud1945 Even with my massive Nier bias I have to disagree. Nier boss themes have their own unique vibe to them, but they don't get you hyped up like the themes in DMC, MG:RR or No More Heroes just to name a few. Though I guess if you know Nier you know that you should never get hype about a boss fight ever.
Music is a massive part of this game and is essentially a core gameplay mechanic as the music itself plays picks up and crescendos based upon your performance in battle. The more epic the fight and the better your performance the louder and more hype the music becomes
You have such a tremendous synesthesia lexicon. It's what keeps bringing me back to your videos, I speak more in emotions but I'm going to borrow a lot of your shapes and colors codex
I think one of the coolest things about this song, is its had almost a mix of every Vergil's themes from all the other dmcs. In the beginning, you almost can hear the Nelo Angelo's theme, called ultra violet.

@@DrumRollTonyReacts The theme song for another playable character from the same game as this! It was the first song featured publically from DMC5 after a very long wait for another game in the series, so it's also very popular. It's a bit more upbeat in comparison: th-cam.com/video/-WpnPSChVRQ/w-d-xo.html
@@DrumRollTonyReacts Devill Trigger wroted by the same author, Cassie Edwards. The song itself was made earlier Bury the Light, but God, it's so incendiary, it's as if it was created to kill demons under it, the vocal line is intertwined with guitar and harmonious synthetics. You just need to listen to it as well as Bury the Light.
@@DrumRollTonyReacts Devil Trigger is actually "the main" music theme of DMC 5 and Nero's battle theme. Normally Vergil (guy who's battle theme Bury the Light is) isn't playable in a normal playthrough. If it comes to other parts of the series, DMC 3 and 4 have a few banger songs that are worth checking out; I think "Devils Never Cry" is and absolute masterpiece, if it comes to video game soundtracks. I won't say much, because that one song is an experience you have to experience on your own. You won't be disappointed, trust me.
I never played any of the DMC games, I recently played 5. It was a fantastic experience, and not knowing any of the story I found it fun to try and piece together relationships and motivations.
Your breakdown and reaction to this song is one of my favorites for sure. I love that you went back after analyzing the song so you can hear the song the way is supposed to be. I have never played this game but this song is the one reason I would play the game if I do end up playing it. The lyrics at the very end…so good. Thanks for that reaction/breakdown, take a sub!
The first 6 minutes of the song were actually all that woupd have been made but as a goodbye to the devil may cry series the rest 3 and a half were added, as a love letter to Vergil as well since he is one of the most important characters if not the most important. Great reaction!
So happy that you reacted to this, it’s quite possibly the best piece of video game music ever written. I’ll give a quick summary of Devil May Cry’s backstory to fill you in a bit. 2000 years ago, the demon king Mundus sought to invade and enslave the human world. One of his most trusted lieutenants, Sparda, had a greater sense of honor than most demons and betrayed Mundus, saving the human race and sealing the portal that once connected their worlds. After nearly 2000 years of wandering the Earth, Sparda settled down with a woman named Eva and they had twin sons, Dante and Vergil. One day Sparda disappears leaving behind his wife and 8 year old twins (21 years after the series began we still don’t know what happened to him lol) Seeing an opportunity in his absence, Mundus sends a small contingent of demons to destroy the Sparda home and kill his family. After hiding Dante away, Eva dies trying to find Vergil who was attacked outside of the home. The brothers each think the other dead until they reunite some 10 years later. Dante having come to resent his demonic heritage has become a mercenary, a demon Hunter for hire, while Vergil having come to resent the inherent weakness of his human heritage has been on a quest for power, so that no tragedy such as the one that killed his mother shall ever befall him again. So the games have you play as Dante while Vergil is something of a returning antagonist. He’s not truly evil, he simply desires more power, and will stop at nothing to gain it.
Ya no idea why, but TH-cam loves to screw with the high pitched vocals, I watched the vid my self and heard the same thing. “Beyond the tree…” that whole verse sounds nothing like that. In game the vocals are clear and not garbled or staticy at all. and holy shit it’s crazy that man could do that with his voice. Literally broke how TH-cam stored the song lmao.
Caseys dmc tracks fot the characters and their story so well its incredible. Wish every MC got this treatmnet. All the lyrics and the general vibe of bury the light and devil trigger fit vergil and nero to a T.
Not sure if someone has commented about this but this is the song that will play if you play Vergil in the game, the game utilizes a combo system depending on how many different moves you can hit into an enemy, the game's music system depends on how long and how big is your combo, to hear this whole song in the game you need to be GOOD to reach the climax.
Anup Sastry is an incredible prog metal drummer, Nolly is the former bassist for Periphery and one of the best producers in the game rn, nobody makes heavy music sound as good as he does, even Mick Gordon goes to Nolly for tips.
Bro Anup is a beast , on the drums plays what needs to be played and still sounds amazing especially that triplet fill towards bringing in the last end
If you are the fan of series, I think you would have been even more impressed. When I first listened to this song, i did not even know its Vergil's theme song. But all I can thought of is... it's HIM. I can felt his presence, his attitude, his sword combo, his movement, his blue coat, his silver hair colour THROUGH the melody and lyrics. That means the writer and everyone behind this song are truly understand the character and DMC story to the core.
This is one of those rare music works that makes you appreaciate being able to hear. I wont blame any youtuber who would listen to this masterpiece and find him/herself not being able to react to. This masterpiece is for the feeling! I found myself dropping tears without knowing why! But I guess this is how a true reaction would be for something this perfect.
I've been playing games for about 20 years, but this track gets me to the bone and doesn't let go. 9 minutes just fly by and I want more. Track has strong competitors, but this is just top 1. I'm going to say stupidity thing now, but when I listen this on headphones, even my steps feels heavier. It's like every step you take creates cracks in the ground. The feeling is simply amazing.
8:00 Sounds like synesthesia! I don't have it but I find it very interesting. This track is one of my favorites in any game I've played, disposing of demons should always be done to awesome music!
I always love the thrid drop, decieving you into expecting the refrain again, but then pulling the rug from under your feet and going into a differnt direction.
I had an extremely good time watching this video and honestly, mostly just agreeing with you the entire way. It almost felt like I was reviewing a piece with a like-minded buddy. As a fellow music theorist I can relate to most of your thought processes and you express yourself in such a relatable and informative way. I sometimes feel like "react content creators" pause the video too much and stall the process more than necessary, but you manage to find the perfect windows to pause and reflect and then respect the piece by rewinding afterwards and I really appreciate that. Keep up the excellent work, you most definitely earned yourself a new subscriber with this video. Wish me luck in binging the rest of your videos and I hope to engage in some critical discussion with you in the comments at some point in the future!

You gotta hear some of them: "Dragonsong" and "In the Balance" from FF14 are really awesome non spoiler tracks from FF14 "One Winged Angel" as the good ol classic.
Thank you for the reaction! I haven't played the game myself, but I heard the song randomly one day and just fell in love with it. One of the coolest songs ever!
I enjoyed this reaction so much. After all the memes I recently listened to the whole piece like 3 weeeks ago and...OMG I have been constantly listen to it, loved it in the first minutes and YES I felt that i needed the game and listen to this too!!
Dude...how is it possible that I get chills every single time I hear 'I am the storm that is approaching' and 'bury the light deep within'? How?? This is not even my favorite franchise.
Bit late to the party here, but I'd like to shout out Victor Borba, the vocalist. He's mostly known for making youtube covers on bands like Periphery, so he's not a 'working professional musician' companies hire when they need a singer. He was contacted by Capcom/Casey Edwards, the composer, specifically for this gig. Very glad that he got the acknowledgement he deserves, I'd be happy to one day be on the level of this beast when it comes to vocals.
Bury the Light is probably one of my favorite songs, I don’t know if it’s just that good or it’s just the series is good as hell and the vocals are lyrically parallel to the story.

@@TheN13 As someone who has only ever seen the abbreviation of max0r's insanity i can appreciate knowing the real story arc. And damn does it make this theme even stronger.

You're like that music professor who actually makes music interesting. Or maybe I just had a boring one lol.
Thanks for the nice comment
Man I think japanese games in general are masterpieces when it comes to soundtracks. Games like Dmc 5, Persona 5, and Metal Gear Rising have such amazing songs!
And if you want a different vibe, NieR games are masterpiece with Keiichi Okabe's work, or FF series especially XIV with Soken talent.
get guilty gear on that list
GGS and guilty gear as a whole have such great bangers
Monster Hunter, Jojo, Sonic has baaanngers for no reason sometimes
The character select screen to Undernight InBirth insane, Phantasy Star Online 2 has maaany bangers, Pokemon, Jujutsu Kaisen, Fire Force, Mario Kart
Wait, nobody mentioned Elden Ring?
I've been waiting for this for so long
Well thank you for stickign around to wait! 👌

I think you’d find the guilty gear strive character themes really interesting. They’re all pretty experimental in the good way
Yes, this right here
Glad to see someone beat me to this comment
you just reminded me of waiting so damn long for the full version of The Roar of the Spark, and when it finally came out, it absolutely delivered
THIS
so true bestie
On of the few songs that I never get tired off.
That's very cool
I thought i was the only one who noticed that! Good job dude from 1 year ago. I love this song so much and I really love how vergils theme references his brothers theme
virgils story is actually probably one of the most tragic stories all he did was search for power after everything happened and he was alone so the drifting through the oceans all alone is kinda important to his character i would advise playing through the games like 1 through five skip the xbox 360 dmc devil may cry tho lol
It's Vergil man
@Raul DMC 2 is canon, the prequel novel for DMC 5 is actually focused on characters from DMC 2, Lucia is even subtly referenced in DMC 5

That's the power of Bury the Light.
It gives them MOTIVATION
it worked on me. well it was 3 m's, the max0r, the memes and the music
I've not heard this song in a while now, but I didn't realise at the time how much of a 'Mick Gordon' feel it's got at times. Super cool!
Casey Edwards was actually sort of like an intern/assistant/student of Mick Gordon for a while, so that's probably why.
they've also worked together, or at least casey's girlfriend has on i'm back to rise
Yesss, I was waiting for this one. One of the single best pieces of video game music I've ever heard
Victor Borba's stuff is all interesting, he has/is in like 3 projects along with being in tight with Capcom it seems. So happy for that dude.
Finally! I waited for this reaction and was sure it will come sooner or later
Those high notes screeched out in that ridiculous rough metal voice tone are just frankly incredible and I feel for the vocalist's poor throat.
I was listening to this song just now and seeing this made my day even better

He says it best himself in Devil May Cry 5
"What would have happened if our places had been switched? Would you have my life and would I have yours?"
Vergil believed he lost everything as a child when his entire family disappeared one day randomly.
Dante knows what happened because *he* was with his mother when it happened, and got to say goodbye. Vergil was alone.
He just wanted to protect his family, but on the path to power he lost his way. He was cheated, manipulated, and beaten down time and time again.
if you do play the series 1,3,4,5. 5 is undoubtedly the best and worth the wait
Start with 1 skip 2
recommend start 3-1-*just dont play 2*-4-5
18:34 Definitely, the “Drifting in the ocean ALLL ALLLLLLLOOOONNNE!” Always gets me. 😭

The composer of this song released a video about a month ago breaking down how the guitar components are performed. I saw that video just before seeing this one, and you got that ultra-subtle detail right

You won't be disappointed, trust me.
god knows how many times i have listened to this amazing theme , thank you for reacting the theme by the way :D !
so much power and passion in this song it's just on another level.

Surprised Casey Edwards hasn't commented yet
if you check other people's reactions to his pieces,
he is there, he watches these, which is hella cool
"Devils Never Cry" up next? 👀 This one took a lot of cues from it, and it's just, *the* Devil May Cry experience
The storm really APPROACHING
Yessss youve answered our calls!! Thank you sir. Glad to hear you love it
Not sure if someone has commented about this but this is the song that will play if you play Vergil in the game, the game utilizes a combo system depending on how many different moves you can hit into an enemy, the game's music system depends on how long and how big is your combo, to hear this whole song in the game you need to be GOOD to reach the climax.

If you are the fan of series,

When I first listened to this song, i did not even know its Vergil's theme song.
But all I can thought of is... it's HIM.
I can felt his presence, his attitude, his sword combo, his movement, his blue coat, his silver hair colour THROUGH the melody and lyrics.
That means the writer and everyone behind this song are truly understand
the character and DMC story to the core.
This is one of those rare music works that makes you appreaciate being able to hear.

You have to know Virgil as a character, and also the entire devil may cry story line to truly appreciate the music.

Thank you! You know exactly why we're here
8:00 Sounds like synesthesia! I don't have it but I find it very interesting. This track is one of my favorites in any game I've played, disposing of demons should always be done to awesome music!
I've only just realised but the lyric, "through vacant halls, I won't surrender" could be a nod to one of Casey's other songs called vacant surrender.
Immortal temptation
Takes over my mind, condemned
Falling weak on my knees
Summon the strength of mayhem
I am the storm that is approaching
Provoking black clouds in isolation
I am reclaimer of my name
Born in flames, I have been blessed
My family crest is a demon of death
Forsakened, I am awakened
A phoenix's ash in dark divine
Descending misery
Destiny chasing time
Inherit the nightmare, surrounded by fate
Can't run away
Keep walking the line, between the light
Led astray
Through vacant halls I won't surrender
The truth revealed in eyes of ember
We fight through fire and ice forever
Two souls once lost, and now they remember
I am the storm that is approaching
Provoking black clouds in isolation
I am reclaimer of my name
Born in flames, I have been blessed
My family crest is a demon of death
Forsakened, I am awakened
A phoenix's ash in dark divine
Descending misery
Destiny chasing time
Disappear into the night
Lost shadows left behind
Obsession's pulling me
Fading, I've come to take what's mine
Lurking in the shadows under veil of night
Constellations of blood pirouette
Dancing through the graves of those who stand at my feet
Dreams of the black throne I keep on repeat
A derelict of dark, summoned from the ashes
The puppet master congregates all the masses
Pulling strings, twisting minds as blades hit
You want this power? Then come try and take it
Beyond the tree, fire burns
Secret love, bloodline yearns
Dark minds embrace, crimson joy
Does your dim heart heal or destroy?
Bury the light deep within
Cast aside, there's no coming home
We're burning chaos in the wind
Drifting in the ocean all alone

From 59 million views 1 year ago to 122 million views now. The video has more returns than BTC and gold combined lol.
The guitar playing the chorus lines at the end is the best part for me
