  • Medhurst Row (User Worked) Level Crossing, Edenbridge, Kent on the Redhill to Tonbridge Line.
    Location: Pettymans Lane, Edenbridge
    Date Filmed: 18-06-2019
    -
    Nearest Station: Edenbridge
    -
    Trains:
    Class 377 (Southern)
    This crossing is one of Schweizer Electronic AG's 'Vamos' systems which was installed here in 2015. The lights and the sounders here are quite different to the typical user worked level crossing set-up. The alarms are surprisingly quite loud. There was previously 'Unipart Dorman' lights and 'yodalarms' here, but this got upgraded by the system currently installed. An old 'yodalarm' from the old set-up is still here, although it is not wired up so therefore does not work. Overall, this is quite an interesting crossing.
    Thanks For Watching!

    Great video! They should've kept the old alarm, lol. Those sound worse than the ones installed at Lydney!

      Thanks! Yeah lol - having been to the Lydney crossings, they do sound better than the ones here.

    They could've done a better job looping that tone...or just used some Bombardier alarms...
    Nonetheless, nice find!

      The Bombardier system alarms sound very similar to Schweizer Electronic alarms. The ones here do loop more clearly than the Bombardier ones. Thanks 😎

      Oh really? This is one of the last crossings I'd expect crossing misuse at. Pity people can't follow a simple red and green light.

    I remember night time walks to this crossing in the never ending summer of 1976, the heat wave year, the wooden boards smelt of pitch and creosote. Such a good memory..In the daytime I would often walk out on the crossing boards and see a yellow dots coming from each direction taking ages to arrive because of the straight view. I remember one particular class 33 loco running light, the ground seeming to bounce in front of the weight. Somethings should never change!

    That's pretty impressive! I've passed it on the train quite a few times, and I passed it like this back in November, and it seems strange that they kept the yodalarms from the old crossing here. Was going to film here but I never did in the end. Shame really as it looks nice and sounds really loud - like a loud Norden Gates! Fab video UKLCC 👍🏻😁

    I lived just yards from this crossing in the 70's and watched tadpoles trundle along here without problems, now this stupid sound and gates. I feel sorry for the residents who have to go through this over protected crossing.

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  ปีที่แล้ว

      Level Crossing safety has most certainly become more of a concern over the years. I bet there was far more crossings like this around in the 70s with none of the safety features this one has. Personally, I don't see this crossing as too high a risk as the line is very straight both directions and the train speed is not exactly fast, but there must be a reason I don't know of as to why these lights were installed.

    Why Gates? Lights are enough!

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because animals may wander onto the tracks, and it acts as a barrier to stop drivers driving straight onto the crossing if they didn't see the lights.

      It's Schweizer Electronic's alarm for this crossing - which is loud and weird! The whole crossing was replaced with this new system so old lights and one alarm were removed, one alarm remained, but has been switched off.

  • @johnnz4375
    @johnnz4375 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don’t get this, having the gates makes it more dangerous, just make it a crossing with only lights and a bell (siren) like a normal railway crossing.

    • @UKLevelCrossingsChannel
      @UKLevelCrossingsChannel  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's always been a user worked crossing and would've been far cheaper installing these lights than converting it to a fully operational crossing with lights, barriers and alarms. I imagine this crossing is not used much, so wouldn't be very cost-effective.

    • @edgworth
      @edgworth 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@UKLevelCrossingsChannel Its a VAMoS (Overlay) system so is considerably cheaper to install than a normal interfaced MSL type, and Hundreds of thousands of pounds cheaper than a full crossing with barriers
