TALKING Railway footpath crossing warning unit

  • Just along from Westerfield Level Crossing in Suffolk there's a foot crossing along a popular country trail. From what I have heard, Network Rail wanted to close this crossing to the public, but it would have been a very unpopular move. So, they installed some talking crossing warning units. They are battery powered with a solar panel to charge and have a PIR to detect people approaching. They cycle through nine different messages when they are approached. Only one side was working. This is a busy line with several freight and passenger trains passing in the hour I was here.

It can't tell if a train is approaching - that requires separate equipment and the installation of such would be very expensive. They would simply close the crossing if it were required as there is a perfectly good crossing only a couple hundred yards away.

@@sethc6663 the equipment used to warm off approaching trains is not some simple WiFi box, it would need to have a separate set of treadles on both lines in both directions and all the appropriate wiring and switch gear installed to a new lineside cabinet.
There are no simple motion detectors etc that have the absolute reliability required to be considered safe to use on the railway. The standards of safety are far higher than many expect mostly because the risk is so high. If it failed to warn of an approaching train then you could easily be killed as a result, even at low speed.

Fun fact - automatic half-barrier crossings come down a mere 26s before the train arrives then open immediately after, however these, as with open crossings, are deemed unsafe for most locations as a shocking number of drivers completely ignore red lights and drive under trains.
As soon as you have a full-barrier it has to be checked (to make sure it's clear) before trains can be permitted through, and that checking process takes time.

Before every crossing, there is a whistle post which is a sign with a big W on it, which tells the engender to blow their whistle. (Or horn in most cases) this is good because most crossings here in America have no gates lights or bells, and the ones that do may not be working properly.

@@xaiano794 Or you know stop and make use of their hearing to listen very carefully for trains at least for those that are not also deaf, they are generally pretty skilled at listening for approaching vehicles as they have to cross the vast majority of streets that only have a few dozen vehicles per hour without any kind of disability assistance system too. Trains are after all pretty loud and a lot easier to hear than a car at the same speed especially since the rail itself conducts vibrations far better than air. Actually there is at least one crossing near me where being deaf would be far more hazardous as the rail hiss and train horn gives much better warning than the ~15 seconds or so that the train is actually visible. Granted the crossing is on a 70 mph curve and while there is a station ~1 km from it not all trains stop there so the express trains can be on you with frightening speed by the time you can see them.

    Fact time..
Riding a bike is the most energy efficient way to go places.
    Think about it though!
It takes _one_ push to go pretty far, and no pushes to go downhill.
Yeah sure, some pushes up a hill, but using a goddamned jetplane or something uses up gallons of fuel. A bike only takes a few pushes.
Soo yeah, bikes > any form of transport and animal, including boats, seaplanes, planes, jets, the cheetah, etc.

And in germany you might get fucked, because the crossing is disabled. I have a few examples. Someone got a house from a relative that died and the only way to get to this house, was over the tracks. This was a house that the train company owend but the former owner bought it, because he worked for the train company and he was allowed to open the crossing on it's own. The new owners can't do it. They must call someone from the company and when the person feels like it, he can open the crossing, after he arrived with his car but this can take at least 30 Minutes. This is an issue and they can't really use this house and selling is no option, because who wants a house, where they need to call someone, to get in or out, especially its no guarantee that this person have time. They tried to sell this house back to the rail company but the offered a price that was way too low.
Others have it a bit easier. An area with a few houses have a dedicated crossing but the operation is quite strange. A worker manual drives to some crossings and closes the crossing by hand. He closes about 5 crossings before the train arrives there but doesn't open these again. When he is at the next station and the train is also there, he opens them and drives back. This takes some time and people cant cross the crossing.
Also there is a crossing for only one house that rarely uses it. They have a crossing that is 24 hours in operation and personnel that are only operate this crossing. The personnel are the people that uses the crossing the most.
It's not the problem of the law. Exceptions are possible, especially for those cases, where very few people are crossing. Some sort of security must be available and it always takes some time. Automated crossings are possible but it takes some time to build them and when very few are crossing, they don't upgrade right away. For the rail company it's easier just follow the law, than asking for exceptions.

So you NEED to have controlled crossings at EVERY intersection? In the US it's not uncommon to just see a sign warning of the crossing.

    • @0ZeldaFreak
      @0ZeldaFreak 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@JoshGerhards technically no, but in practice yes. The law allows exceptions but never saw a completely uncontrolled crossing that is active in use. There are at least some manual traffic lights for cargo trains. Even tram crossings are kinda always secured with lights.
At least you get the same penalty when crossing a crossing illegal. Happend to me once and luckily only a 40€ warning. Normally that would cost 350€. To my defence that crossing with barriers was a special one for emergency vehicles and is always closed. The crossing for pedestrians only have lights and was right next to it but was not bike friendly. The bike friendly crossing was at the other side of the station.
