Tangmere is running with worn con rod bearings. As the bearings wear the clearance evolved will cause the rods to drop at low speed hence the con rod 'ring' Common in steam days and no big thing unless something else happens, Like bearing shell fracture , key is lubrication any loss should be fixed before moving anything.
Yes I noticed that too, bearing in mind people are bound to be watching or filming it does not show the undertaking in a very good light. Might have been a passenger I suppose?
You do some amazing videos jack. These are top quality. Absolutely shame on that clown throwing litter out of the window to be left disgarded on the track. He should have nothing to do with mainline preservation
The problem is that Tangmere is an unmodified Bullied Pacific. They had their weaknesses (oil immersed chain driven valve gear for one) and fitters didn't get on with them. The modified ones did away with some of the problems, but not all.
A kettle, a tractor and a sparkie....all on one train! 🤩 Whats not to like!? (Even if there were some technical issues). Very trashy behaviour at 1:09 though....I do hope it was not a member of the train crew doing that as they should know far better than that!
Well THAT is a first! A class 86 pulling a steam excursion! 1:09 WHO THE HECK is that chucking rubbish out on the tracks THAT will get steam excursions BANNED from the ML!5:39 Here we see Tangmere speeding up to 100 MPH! Probably the fastest shes been in a long time😂 The tender DOES look empty so I think shes out of coal maybe water as well? But possible a bearing is runnung hot? Does anyone know if they preserved a Class 87? They were MONSTERS of speed.
Tangmere has definitely broke something, because on railtour, 44871 is now expected to do all of Tangmere railtorus. Possibly a fault with the cab or with the braking? 🤔
Hardly suprising that Tangmere is becoming unreliable WCR have worked the backside off the engine this year, and a hard route over Shap, and the Settle and Carlisle route.
It was over 20 minutes late departing on the return movement to Carnforth, and then was "unavailable" for Tuesday's tour. But not a peep from WCR as to what the problem was/is.
@richardharrold9736 And NEVER shy for steam. Bulleid’s boilers and drafting was pretty damn good. OK, a bit heavy on coal, but crew will forgive that if a loco will steam freely and time the train.
First time I sw Tangmere on the main line was at Oxenholme where it was being taken out of service in the loop, due to leaving Preston with all the lubrication box corks being left on the platform - seems to be a singularly unfortunate loco in having failed more often than most other steam locos on the roster
How many miles has it put in this year as the only air braked loco other than 44871 available to Carnforth? Besides, it seems likely it was an AWS or TPWS problem
Please forgive my ignorance I love trains but this I just don’t know. When you have a diesel on the end of a train is the diesel actually giving any assistance or is it just for the return journey? I’m sure someone will enlighten me. Cheers 👍
It's in case of breakdowns Gareth so they can keep the running line clear for everyday booked services. One of my workmates at Salisbury left to work for WCR on the back up locos.
Sometimes it also provides power for lighting or heating in the coaches and can help reverse the train if it's at a terminus and the steam loco can't propel the train out.
i miss the sounds of class 86s on the mainlines as the sounds they make after a long fast journey is amazing the fans & traction motors when they're closed down real locomotives at work! nice video 🥰
@@soundseeker63 occasionally you may hear a class 86/87 closing down at crewe on a raiitour but all our decent class 86s/87s are in Bulgaria now sadly what a joke our poop 💩uk railways now are!!!

@@SSccaanniiaa Looked like chip papers top me coming from the support coach, dirty sods, they should make them clean it up ,there is enough crap trackside without adding.
@ethmister I'm a dinosaur from the 60s. I prefer to see locos in their original livery but accept that many like different liveries, like the purple Porterbrook Deltic etc.
Yes I can agree they are a bit silly on a steam hauled service, although if there wasn't one there, the passengers would be sat in completely dark carriages back to Liverpool 😅
@@BritishRailJack Ah I see! Are there no generator coaches? I'm looking at this from an Irish perspective and most of our mainline steam trains have a van with electric gens and steam heaters. They usually have an 071 class diesel follow light engine in the block behind to take care of possible steam loco failures.
@davidkavanagh189 oh really? Well to be honest I am just going off what other people say and not fully sure if it has a generator coach or if the diesel is providing power but I believe it is the latter 🙂
@@BritishRailJack There are a number of generator coaches around, but they don't seem to get used a lot, in general yes the diesel on the back is providing electrical power/ ETH. they've also been known to give a bit of a shove if the kettle is struggling.
better than light bulbs and bog rolls out of the old mark1s on the football specials 🙄think some of the do goobers wont be happy till west coast stop running trains

Thanks for that explanation re bearings etc.
Throwing garbage out the window is a disgrace.
I spotted that as well.
Staff throwing litter out of the window is very poor indeed. I hope it’s looked into

should be ashamed throwing litter out of the window!!
What an arcehole!!!!×
Looks like someone in the crew carriage as well! Disgusting.
Utterly disgusting and yes it was from a staff coach
That paper was from the support coach so must have been staff or those responsible for the locomotive. Disgusting behaviour.

The 86 is turned out beautifully, what a handsome machine
Tangmere coming past clitheroe like it was already knackered tbh
One of my earliest memories is this locomotive driving into Woolwich arsenal station and my Dad saying “Tangmere”.

Yep it was still a good tour! And yes throwing the litter out was not on especially if it was the staff.
Bugger that's got some play by the sounds of it , i do love Terrible Tangmere
Glad others noticed the litter. Disgraceful!
i wonder if there ever will automatic couplings up between loco and carriages instead of by hand as it is done now
I asked a driver on Tuesday. He said there eas an electrical problem. To me that suggested AES or TPWS wasn't working
oh ok thanks for your information Leslie 😀👍

87002 is preserved and still operational. 87001 and 035 are also preserved but not operational.
86 at one end, 47 at the other. It's like the great 70s again, a proper time for spotting at Preston❤.
Tangmere has definitely broke something, because on railtour, 44871 is now expected to do all of Tangmere railtorus. Possibly a fault with the cab or with the braking? 🤔
It just looks like soap suds to me.I can’t believe they would throw something out that close to a station 🤔
I love the look of these streamlined locos.

Great video
Littering is an arrestable offense btw.
Just home from 4 weeks in the UK. One of the overwhelming impressions is the huge amount of litter, everywhere. At 1:16, you see why.
I’ve had a fantastic run behind Tangmere. It likes long stretches of high speed running with heavy loads on relatively level routes…
@richardharrold9736 And NEVER shy for steam. Bulleid’s boilers and drafting was pretty damn good. OK, a bit heavy on coal, but crew will forgive that if a loco will steam freely and time the train.

Sorry for asking. This steam locomotive is a Bulleid, isn't it?
Yes it is!
Unrebuilt Battle of Britain class, virtually identical with the West Country class, built as mixed traffic locos

What is a Tangmere? Is it the Battle of Britain class steam loco?
Its sad the spam can failed, but the 47 came to the rescue again, seriously WCRC are becoming a bit of a joke
Tangmere seems to break down on most rail tours but thank you

Wow, going back to steam?

Didn’t seem to be much wrong with Tangmere, as he appeared to give a hefty shove to 86401 !
