1984 was a pretty great year… I checked out of Am radio during disco and started listening to folk after having been a Beatles and Pink Floyd fan among other artists of the 60s and early 70s. Then, in ‘83 and ‘84 there was an explosion of great rock.

That great trumpet playing you heard on this track by The Outsiders was by the late John Madrid who also played with classic big bands & jazz outfits like Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, Harry James, Stan Kenton & David Benoit. Madrid sadly passed away at 42 in 1990 but laid down some wonderful trumpet during his short career.
Madrid also played trumpet on songs for Donna Summer, Elton John, Sonny & Cher, & Wayne Newton. Obviously, with acts like this, he must have been a top-tier trumpet player.

Same here Kim, never heard it before, but when you look back, you can see what was happening in the UK music scene in 1966, Pink Floyd, Soft Machine, the Stones and the Who changing it up, a lot of the early 60s bands were already falling by the wayside, so pop had been turned on its head, a Beatles type pop group were always going to struggle, just look at the direction the Beatles took.

Wow - haven't heard this in decades! The outsiders were actually the first band that I ever saw perform live! I was about 13-14, and after begging my parents for a while, they let me go to a dance in a nearby small town (the LRC in Halstad, MN ), and this was the band. This song was recently released and getting radio airplay, and they must have been traveling through the area on the way to bigger towns/venues. They didn't have horn players or an organist, just a singer, guitar player, bass player and drummer, but I enjoyed it, and it furthered my ambitions to play guitar in my own bands (which I eventually did).

I've heard this hundreds of times, and always dug it. It has been decades since I've heard it though. Every young person at that time knew it, and moved to it. Except Eleanor Throckmorton of Parma, Ohio, who sadly only had a head and two toes, separated by three necks. She was a little shy, as you might have predicted. Seriously though, the philosopher Schopenhauer once said that the new was seldom good, because good things are only new for a fraction of their lives. So by finding and sharing these timeless treasures, you are sparing new generations from the flowing rivers of garbage that are being newly hustled. And by training the ear to the timeless good, new creators can evolve better products for yet other generations to come. Every country, every age, has something worth hearing.

FINALLY someone reacted to OUR HOMETOWN boys and were a hit NATIONALLY. THEY ARE FROM CLEVELAND, OHIO and we Clevelanders who were teens back in the '60s were SOOOOO proud of them. Some of the original members have already passed. Through the years the band has continued on under the same name with many various members over the years, up until the present. Sonny Geraci who continued with the band for years, died in 2017.

Can't beat anything from the sixties era! If you don' t shake and dance to this one, you must have one foot in the grave! High school dances classic play.

Sonny Geraci, the lead singer was also the lead singer of Climax who had a hit with Precious and Few. Making Sonny the lead singer on two one hit wonders.

When you realize that musicians and studios had very little equipment to work with, it makes these old recordings so much more special.
If you were a guitar player in the US in 1966 would have a guitar, a fender amp that had reverb, and maybe tremolo (you'd need to plug into the "vibrato" channel to use the tremolo), the amp only made overdrive if you played at very high volume and you maybe had a fuzz pedal and or a tape delay unit. That was it. You didn't modify anything, because there was no aftermarket parts.
Studios had either 4 or 8 track tape recording machines, and delay, reverb, compression, and limiters, and nothing else.
The studio itself was just a big room, not specifically designed for acoustics, very primitive conditions.
Musicians, producers, and engineers had to really know their stuff, and be clever about how the gear and studio was used.

My favorite song of theirs is a little known one off their first album. It's called "Girl In Love". Sad, but beautiful.
