I was 9 years old when this song came out in 1966. All the girls in my neighborhood wanted boots like these after Nancy came out with this song. We called them go-go boots back then. My mom bought me a pair for Christmas that year. It's funny how music can bring back so many memories. I remember dancing on the hood of our car in those boots. Like Nancy did coming down those stairs, I gracefully danced from the hood of the car stepping down on the trunk, then on the street. I memorized every word of this song and made a whole routine and danced with friends in the neighborhood in those "sexy" boots when I was young. We also danced in the street to Harper Valley PTA. Don't worry I didn't hurt the car at all, back then they were solid and never made any dents when you climbed on top. Nancy Sinatra is Frank Sinatra's daughter.

Seriously, the smiling thing though: it's fascinating to look at at any group photo with a mixture of men and women in it. Who in the photo is smiling? 90% of the time, it's us! Trying to appear pleasing, and harmless...unlike those surly fellers, who on the whole, don't seem to feel that obligation. I wonder why?
Not that there's anything wrong with being nice. I'm all for women and men being kind and caring. It's just that it shouldn't be coerced niceness, based on gender. And it shouldn't be there to distract from the bruises.

I think when she said she found a brand new box of matches was a metaphor for finding her another man. And what this new man knows the old man didn't have time to learn.

nancy took this song and went to vietnam to entertain the troops. the servicemen hated the song!! the song empowered girls and in the unpopular war the troops were getting tons of heart breaking "dear john" letters. many instances when she started singing the song the soldiers took their boots off and threw them at her! much to her dissappointment, they did not like it.

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned it, but I've read that Lee Hazelwood, who wrote the song, played it for Frank Sinatra and he said, "I guy can't sing that song. It has to be a woman." Nancy sure did it up right!

Lee Hazelwood wrote it and was going to record it himself. Nancy heard it and told Lee the song sounds abusive coming from a man, but from a little girl it was perfect.

If you look closely, you can tell she is Frank Sinatra's daughter, even small like he was! She's named after her mother, who was also named Nancy.

mini skirts, go go boots, nehru shirts with puffy sleeve shirts was the attire of the late 60s. Frank Sinatra's daughter at her finest!

It would take a special kind of stupido, to mess with Frank's daughter to begin with.

This song for its time was considered rebellious and almost taboo like because it was about women's empowerment over a man. She is seductive and boots like that were more counter culture of the norm. Meaning, most people who dressed a certain way were perceived to be labeled a certain way and that was the norm in the 60's

I love when a woman is secure enough to say that another woman is beautiful and stunning. Says a lot. We women need to do this more. Love this lady reactor, her husband, too, but she especially is something special.
