I bought this last week: a 13' M4 MBP, base model. I was delighted to find that the base model has 16 GB RAM and 512GB storage as a standard. I edit 4K60fps on Final Cut Pro, and it's been working great. I almost considered swapping it for the 24 GB RAM option, but since I don't do video editing for a career, 16 GB would be enough to last me 8 years at most. I had my 15-inch 2017 MBP for 7 years and it still performs very well if I use proxies 50% in FCP. The only reason i bought this machine was because my screen gave out last month and my keyboard was duplicating inputs. I may've gotten away with the Air, but I sure do love the bells and whistles the Pro has to offer (as well as the added storage).
@@amirhossein2057 I mean not bad at all except if you’re continuously using heavy tasks, then you’re looking around 3 hours. Great video, Noah! The base M4 MacBook Pro is what I think we all wished the base M3 was last year. I upgraded last year to the M3 pro MacBook Pro because the base M3 was such a rip off. But if I were buying today, I would definitely go with the base M4. Thanks for the great video as always!
you made the right choice but it cost you more haha. glad other people can save moving forward, including you if you upgrade to an M5, M6 or later model :)
The very subtle peak into your life going crazy during the all nighter is unironically part of what makes this a great video. I'm getting a feel for someone's actual life with the device. plus it gave me a laugh
I was able to pick up this model but with a 1 TB SSD, 16 GB RAM and the nano-texture display at my local Apple Store. No special configuration, so was able to just walk in and out of the store with mine. I absolutely love this machine and am coming from the 2019 16" MacBook Pro. I thought I would miss the extra screen size, but I don't. The lighter weight, portability and amazing battery life are way more useful to me. Also, very happy with M4. I don't need the power of M4 Pro or M4 Max, so like you, I am glad Apple made the base MacBook Pro the made mostly the same as the higher powered models. Sure, my SSD is slower and doesn't have Thunderbolt 5, but again, I am not doing anything that requires that kind of power.

I'm debating of getting the M4 Pro or this M4 model. I currently have an M1 Pro but, my use is very limited. I don't do any video editing. I scored the M4 Pro for $1,750 and the M4 is currently $1,399. What are your suggestions?
I’m doing evaluations on chance to buy an m4 base model or a m4 pro, I’m web developer but I use photoshop, illustrator and Lightroom and I 3d print for hobby . I’m still wondering if makes sense to go for the pro or base model
I decided to go with the base model M4 MBP. It replaced my 5 year old windows machine and compared to it this thing flies. I don't game (I have an Xbox and my old Windows machine for that) and I think for light to moderate work the base model will serve most general users very well. Equipping a 13'' M3 Air to same spec is $1299, and the 15" $1499. And the Pro gives you ProMotion, more I/O, better battery life, better webcam, better speakers. I just believe especially compared to the 15" Air, the base 14" Pro is a better value and is worth the extra $100 when comparatively equipped. And for the extra Benjamin you get an M4 vs the M3, and while the M4 may not be much faster than the M3, it is at least better future proofed. I'm glad Apple have finally stopped nerfing the base model Pro, because no matter if your buying the base M4 or a fully spec'd out Max model, they are all MacBook Pros, and should be treated as much. I believe the biggest difference is the higher end ones have Thunderbolt 5 and support more external displays, but Thunderbolt 4 is still perfectly serviceable. And they even let you get nano-texture on the base. Man, they really fixed the base model. A rare W for Apple.
Hi! I’m going to buy a MacBook Pro soon, but I’m not sure which one to buy: M4 seems very well balanced especially for the use in computer science and physics master degree. However, the M4 pro with 24 gb ram and more power is very tempting. I’d go with the M4 pro to future-proof and mostly to have some extra ram and power, even for some rare gaming. What is stopping me is the fact that the M4 pro is less efficient for light tasks, since it has less efficiency cores. What do you think? I’m going to keep it for the next 6 years minimum.
I remember prior to the retina models, Apple had a 1,699 base model 15 inch model MacBook Pro with Intel graphics only. I would like to see Apple do something similar for the 16 inch, an 1,899 model with maybe 18 GBs of RAM.
The base model will be the new m4 macbook air. Its probably gonna have an 8 core or 10 core m4 with no gpus or maybe 8 core gpu and 8gb ram. They should price it less than 8-900$
would you say the 12-core pro m4 chip is better to get because of the battery? better than the 14-core m4 pro chip?, struggling because I want a long battery but still very powerful, will be getting 48gb ram and 2tb ssd regardless
@ but the idle extra gpu cores will eat battery? Still on the fence between 12-core vs 14-core… another issue is do you prefer nano texture display over glossy? 😅

Great review i might get this honestly you think this would work great with adobe? Like premier pro, photoshop and illustrator? I was aiming for the M4 pro but base model looks promising. Biggest thing for me i wouldnt want to over heat the laptop itself
Question for anyone: Should do an upgraded Base M4 or just go with an upgraded M4 Pro?? I’m actually willing to do a trade in for my M2 MacBook Air , just wondering if an upgraded Base Model would be enough for multitasking and intensive tasks even though it has only 1 fan, I always tend to upgrade RAM before storage, any advice would help
Pretty comprehensive review full of a ton of information, just as I was looking for. My wife needs a good working machine, at the moment she does graphic designs, PS, Indesign, web browser based Canva work, etc. but only part time so she still doesn't earn that much from it, so we are looking for a laptop that could cover her needs without spending unnecessary money to RAM, extra cores and so on. The base M4 specs are probably more than enough for this type of work. She comes from a 2017 MacBook air, so it'd be an enormous skyrocket leap anyway.
I still don’t see the logic of upgrading from my M1 Pro.. I don’t use it for creativity stuff. Just MS Office work productivity apps and World of Warcraft. Funnily enough, if I can get better frame rates on WoW , then THAT will be my reason to upgrade.
I am very torn between M4 base or M4 pro chips. I will mainly do light video editing (couple times a week 4K roughly editing 1-2h a 10 minute video), light rendering in blender, and general multitasking. Any recommendations?
I feel like the m4 is enough for those things according to all the reviews I saw. I was also torn and went with the M4, the pro is just too expensive and the base model seems it can take that load of work as well
