Whilst I absolutely agree that for most basic users, the M4 base is more than sufficient .... what about in a year or two time with Apple Intelligence in use .... or what about in 3 years time with a few OS upgrades ... could the 16GB RAM start to be an issue ...would the performance boost of the 'Pro' start to shine through? I ask as a friend is looking to buy a new M4 and they are a very basic user, but will keep this laptop for 8-10 years like they've done with their current (2014) MacBook Pro?
If the base model is sufficient now why pay around a $1000 more to upgrade in the hope it will still be good in a few years when in a few years you can buy a new base configuration machine for around 1500$ that then will be much better than your current upgraded model ?
My budget was not a limiting factor, but since I am a light to medium user, I went for the M4 over the M4 pro, because of the better battery life even though I could have easily gone for the M4 pro. And in all real world tests, the M4 goes a lot more than just 2 hours over the M4 pro, especially when put in low power mode on both models.

With all the Apple Intelligence stuff coming, will 16 GB of RAM be enough in the next few years? The RAM upgrade is the main reason I’m considering the M4 Pro, as the price difference isn’t significant if I were to opt for 24 GB on the M4
Currently A.I. is being supported on all devices with Apple Silicon and a minimum of 8GB of RAM. So it seems likely that 16GB will be good enough for the next few years.
AI takes up about 1.7 to 2GB of RAM. How much more you need wholly depends on what you’re doing and how long you intend to keep the laptop. The M4 Pro chipset with 24gb of RAM should be sufficient for most people for many years. That’s what I would recommend unless you simply intend to do lighter tasks only.

I was waiting for the M4 MacBooks to come out but now I'm not sure which model I should buy. I was thinking about the base model with 1 TB storage upgrade, but I've seen lots of reviews saying that the M4 Pro is the best price/quality option; additionally, it may suit better my requirements. After a zillion hours research, and 2 hours testing at the apple store, I went with the MBP M4 Pro Silver 14 inch with 14-20-16 (cpu ,gpu, neural), 48gb ram and 1tb SSD. Decided there was no part of that I was willing to compromise on. Excited for the thunderbolt 5. I plan to use this docked half the time and laptop half the time. According to real world testing of TH-cam channel Max tech the battery difference is around 7% to the regular M4s favor. This is very amazing considering the M4 Pro is a much more power hungry chip than the weaker M4.
@@bodigames it is not 7%, it is 28% difference which is quite a lot. 32/25= 1.28 between the two numbers. If you let the battery drain to the bottom and that trend continues, it could mean a few hours difference in usage time. For people who work unplugged most of the time, a few hours can be a significant difference, it can be the difference between "i need to carry my charger with me or not at all". Anyway i am not sure if that maxtech test is very "real world", as nobody uses cinebench on a daily basis. I'd like to see a test where they run a youtube video for example in 4k using wifi looping until the battery dies and see how long it lasts (this is a more real world scenario since everyone watching this uses youtube by definition). I have an M1 pro which is now 3 years old and a full battery is lasting me less than 5hs browsing the web with lots of tabs open and answering emails. (battery also loses capacity when it becomes old), it's one of the main reasons i am thinking to upgrade
Saw 10 mins of this video and got nothing out of it. Could have been summarised in one liner if you need it for professional work then consider m4 pro.
I just get a base m4 , since the performance of the m4 pro isn't that impressive at this price point. For 2000usd , I can build a PC with 7800x3d and rtx 4080 supper pair with 32 gb ram, which has far more power especially on the gpu side, if I need a lot of power I will get that instead of a m4 pro macbook.
I'm struggling to choose my first mac for development. I want a bigger screen to fit more code in it, but at the same time I doubt that it is worth spending $3.5k on a 16" m4 pro. Maybe it's enough to buy a 16" m3 pro, as it has +/- the same performance as basic m4? Or maybe I should wait for the 15" Air to come out? Argh, why doesn't Apple release everything at once 😢

I don't know if anyone can potentially help me with this: I am still going back and forth between nano texture or standard display. On the one hand, it does look good (better than I thought) when seeing it in person in the Apple Store. On the other hand, my primary concern is can it potentially be scratched more easily compared to the stander display, especially if a crumb gets stuck on the keyboard and moves around a little bit when say rotated in a backpack. Even the Apple Store employees didn't really help me with this question. I am more confused than ever.
@@GregsGadgets I was defiantly going to buy Apple care either way. I just wish that deciding which screen quality to go with wasn't the biggest issue for me, which is shouldn't (probably just making a mountain out of a molehill). @@tonyt8271don’t get a keyboard cover, because of the way these laptops are designed, when folded there is minimal space between screen and keyboard which means screen will be scratched. In my opinion, nano texture is a gimmick, if they didn’t release it then nobody would be asking for it anyway. The colours look washed and the screen looks darker in the reviews I’ve seen…if you spend 80% or more in a bright setting or next to natural light and can’t do anything about it then sure get the nano texture, otherwise I’d rather bump up the SSD instead or just save the extra money. I am someone who has always bought Base model macs and let me tell you you’re better off getting the Pro version. Last week my MacBook Pro intel base model died on me after 5 years. Probably motherboard failure. If you wanna use your new Mac and be sure it survives for more than 5 years definitely get the Pro. You get an extra fan that will help keep the system cooler. The extra ram will help you out after 3-4 years as System software and apps get heavier and therefore more demanding. And idem ditto for the stronger pro chip.
@I’d advise you M4 or M3 Not lower than that. Not that the M2 isn’t great (I still use a M1 MBA and it handles most things easily) but M4 and M3 give you great future proofing and performance. I’d go with the base M4 Macbook Pro if you want an amazing laptop with the best screen Apple has to give rn in a laptop, or a 16gb/24gb RAM M3 Macbook Air if you don’t want to spend that much, given the Airs have great displays too and are great value for performance, especially now that Apple lowered the price for the 16gb variants

I need it for music production and video editing and I’m sure I’d be good with the M4 and I’m sure the M4 Pro is more than I’ll need but figured for an extra couple hundred I get that peace of mind. Idk, should I regress? It would be nice to pay a little less…
I'm just the opposite. I have the M4 trying to decide if I should go for the M4 pro due to the extra memory
@ yeah I kept it and haven’t looked back.. it’s pretty awesome. 24gb memory w/ 1tb ssd
14" m4 pro 12c vs 14c, heat/performance trade offs please 🥺
@@stefan4831 True, that's certainly an option. :-)
I was waiting for a real test ! Thank you very much 🙏
Getting M4 Max next week for Cinema 4D.. cannot wait
return my nano texture base model 16 inch macbook pro for a regular glass one, love it🎉, used to use a 14 inch m2 pro, the bigger screen is life changing
What made you return the nano textured MacBook?
@@MatthewVlossakI heard it makes the display less vibrant.
For this old normal if I was going to purchase a Apple MacBook model today it would be the M4 14-inch Apple MacBook Pro with 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, 16-core Neural Engine, 24GB unified memory, 2TB SSD storage, 70W USB-C Power Adapter, Three Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI port, SDXC card slot, headphone jack, MagSafe 3 port, Backlit Magic Keyboard with Touch ID - US English - $2,399.00 US.
This is so helpful now im decided i will pick the m4 chip with 24GB and 16GB storage
@1:25 40 is shown as 80% of 120 PLS FIX THAT! I beg you!
Ai is also on iPhones and iPads u don’t need 24gb of rams for ai
@@Sequel7 unless you’re running an LLM locally, which some do. They recommend quite a bit of RAM for that.
@@Cujobob I run locally on 16gb M4, it works okay. Even with browser with around 15 tabs open, some more simple apps running and LLM Mistral model running, i reach max around 14GB RAM usage. But I don't push local LLM that much since online ChatGPT is much more suitable and local LLM is used mostly for more specific and simple tasks.
nice review which non technical people need
All I need the MacBook to do is help with my work, and also run Minecraft and Roblox
Right now I have a MacBook Air early 2020 intel i5 / 8 GB RAM / 256 GB SSD. I bought it when It came out for simple school tasks and all the online classes needs I had. During quarantine I started coding and as of now I code in Swift with Xcode (iOS apps) and in Dart/Flutter. To be honest, my MacBook has done a really good job, but a new and more powerful machine is what I need now (additionally, I'm entering college next year and might study software engineering or other similar career). In my country, the difference is of around $500 USD (consider 1 TB for both), which I'm not sure if I should pay. Also, I'm thinking of getting the new nano-texture display upgrade. Could anybody give me any suggestions?
My 14" Macbook M4 MAX is fantastic. It is Expensive, yes. But I plan on keeping it for years. I Wanted to let people know. that I have yet to hear the fans kick on :) which was an issue with early 14" models. 64GB.
Now that’s a BigMac
The M4 is already a beast, I think it'll do better for my use.
Office work, movies and perhaps some logic pro and final cut pro every now and then.
Just upgraded from the M1 MacBook Pro to the base M4 MacBook Pro. Excited to get it set up!
How did that work out for you? I have an M1 Pro MacBook and I’m thinking of upgrading to the regular M4 chip one
@ so far CPU power is insane running Ableton and Affinity designer. I can definitely feel the difference and the extra ports are a must. HOWEVER, the 16gb ram is the only bottleneck Iv noticed so far. Wish I would have bumped it up but still it’s been a great upgrade even at the 16gb ram.
@@DanielPvb4 ah ok cool, I am looking at the same base M4 model but I’m bumping it up to 32GB of ram
@@meazy195 Yeah I think that’s the way to go!
@@DanielPvb4pretty sure with MacOS apps use as much RAM as needed whether you’re using 16 GB or 24 GB. It’s just at higher RAM capacity apps are more reluctant to give up their RAM so other apps can use it instead.
I am a QA Engineer and UI/UX Designer, i use Katalon as Software Testing Automation, and i write multiple language code like; Phyton, Java, Javascript, HTML and CSS . And Once a month i do editing video on premier, and i use Illustrator, Photoshop, and Figma a lot for designing.
What would you recommend M4 or M4 Pro?
M4 MacBook Air or M4 MacBook Pro???? 120hz is probably the biggest reason for me but that does not seem justifiable. Any recommendations?
The difference between the base M4 and base M4 pro both with 24gb ram and 512gb SD is £200 in the uk. Would the performance be that noticeable? Say for video editing and logic.
Future proofing is such dumb concept. People buying M1 Max and M2 Pro thought they were "future proofing" themselves. See how theyre doing now.
Not everyone upgrades all the time though, depending on the user they can future-proof it to a certain extent
m1 max after years are still miles ahead than 2000$ windows machines nowadays..
Doing just fine with my M2 Pro 16GB/1TB :)
Honestly my M1 2020 Macbook Pro bought on launch day is still going strong.
I bought an M1 MBA with 16GB Ram back in 2021, I still can use it even with the the so Called AI, if I haven’t made the call back then I would have to upgrade to use the AI properly. So making some calls in the name of future proofing aint dumb.
All this talk over the base M4 gets me more excited for the upcoming M4 MBA.
base m4 16 GB RAM will be enough for 5-10 Chrome profiles at the same time, each with a few tabs? or better m4 pro with 24 GB ram?
Yes it’s completely enough
They're both Mini-LED, they're both 120hz, they both have thesame amount of ports, they both have thesame screen resolution, they're both SPACE BLACK!
For the average user. It's $600 less. What more do you want?
Based Model M4 Macbook Pro it is.
I have a peripheral switcher that I click 1 button and can go between my PC and Mac. Now the wait... since we did military financing, they said up to 8 weeks. Ugh. Also we're Canadian so it was $4000 without any interest (no interest on military plans).
What a great video! If I wanted to play LoL on 120fps high resolution and also develop games by using unity, which is my best option? Please reply ^^
I want to see a battery comparison between the M4 and M4 Pro. I get 24 vs 22 hours, but I want to see real world test.
According to real world testing of TH-cam channel Max tech the battery difference is around 7% to the regular M4s favor.
This is very amazing considering the M4 Pro is a much more power hungry chip than the weaker M4.
I agree i want to see the same review of real world battery life
@@bodigames it is not 7%, it is 28% difference which is quite a lot.
There’s a huge difference in battery life
You are wrong. The M4 is louder than the M4pro the latter has two fans hence running quite as they rarely need to go at max speed. Thanks for the vid.
If you run your Mac at max speed all the time, chances are, you need to upgrade your Mac
What size that you have in your hands
Is the bass model good enough for someone who does three final cut TH-cam videos a week
6:20 STOP buying Macs for gaming!!!!!
I will never understand why people mention gaming with MacBooks. Just build a gaming pc with $2000 rather than a MacBook.
In Poland M4 Pro 24 GB and M4 32 GB with nanotexture display cost identical.
Saw 10 mins of this video and got nothing out of it. Could have been summarised in one liner if you need it for professional work then consider m4 pro.
did you say there is a slight SSD speed difference? Isn't it almost double?
What was the real life battery difference between the two?
Hey Greg, your comparison of the M4 vs M4 Pro MacBook Pro was spot on! Your breakdown of the base model vs. the Pro really helps in making an informed decision. Awesome glad you found it helpful. Shoot me an email and we can talk further about a collaboration!
What is the app you use that shows the CPU, GPU, Memory, fan speed, temp etc. in the Menu bar? Thanks
As an accounting major the base M4 is a no brainer and might even be overkill but should last me until I graduation in 2028😂
I don't know if anyone can potentially help me with this: I am still going back and forth between nano texture or standard display.
Maybe consider getting apple care with the nano texture display option?
@@GregsGadgets I was defiantly going to buy Apple care either way. I just wish that deciding which screen quality to go with wasn't the biggest issue for me, which is shouldn't (probably just making a mountain out of a molehill). I just keep going back and forth between screen quality to get (especially if you think about the money that goes towards it).
@@GregsGadgets PS: Love your channel! Have for years!!!
Get a ghost keyboard cover, will keep your keyboard clean and act as a protective layer between screen and keyboard in backpack
Hope this helped :)
Also it may be worth checking other TH-cam reviews about nano texture and reading comments because comments are real life experiences :))
Are we talking about 14 inch or 16 inch here ???
14”
Id really love to have you explain connecting 2 external display to the m4 and m4 pro
Apple makes this so confusing
And then i see docks that literally cost 300 bucks
what are temps and fan noise?
as a graphic designer i use the basic popular adobe apps and big works in after effects. I wanted to buy the base m4 with 16gb ram due to the price point, should i go up and for the 24gb ram instead or is 16 enough..
Is the two fan and heat sink not a benefit? I’d be splitting hairs by $200… idc about the performance stats, I care about durability with heavy usage.
thank you! m4 is enough for the majority of users
Forgot to mention single vs dual fans SSD speeds between the two.
I mentioned SSD speeds, no point in mentioning the fan differences when the base M4 doesn't really need them.
14inch M4 Pro for me. 48GB will be plenty.
Nice
Bought M4 max . but didn't feel any difference compared by M1 pro . need suggestion can I switch M4 max to m4 pro with 48GB Ram. I have memory intensive development apps.

Technically there already is two classes, air and pro
Would you suggest buying the MacBook pro M4 pro (base model) to make sure it will be future-proof (I want to keep it for 5 or 6 years), or is the MacBook pro M4 (base model) enough?
I don't know whether the M4's 16 GB can manage Apple Intelligence and other stuff like photo editing, without ending up with slowing down, ecc...
I'm not a professional but I'd primarly use it for photo editing, a bit of 3D works and office work
I am someone who has always bought Base model macs and let me tell you you’re better off getting the Pro version.
@ thank you for the answer.
But you had an intel, do you not think that things might have changed with the coming of apple silicon?
Logic Pro doesn’t utilize efficiency cores 👎
Who else bought the M4 Mac mini returned it and bought the M4 MacBook Pro⁉️😅

Air is enough tbh
@dinis984 I currently have a Dell chromebook 3110 and mackbook 2017.

@I’d advise you M4 or M3
Not lower than that.
